This invention relates to a novel combination of exible article casing and brush, and more particularly to a brush in combination with a powder compact casing, a comb casing and the like.

VPowder compacts are generally provided with soft,lf flexible casings or containers within which the compactmay be inserted and carried in the purse or'handbag in order to retain stray powder dust from settling out in the handbag or on the cbntentsthereof.

- .Whenfthe powder'compact is removed from the casing' and employed to apply powder to the face ofl the user, the' clothing of the yuser becomes coated with powder dust and, since un'dernormal conditions thereis no satisfactory and eincient means for removingv this stray powder from the clothing, the user must resort to the unsatisfactory expedient of brushing the stray powder dust from-her'clothing with her hands.

Accordingly, it is an object vof the present invention to provide a flexible casing for a powder compact or the like having a brush combined therewith for removing the stray powder dust from the apparel of the user.

The invention further contemplates the provision of a soft, non-rigid casing or container having an open end for the reception of a powder compact or the like, the casing or container having at its opposite end a movable bristle brush normally held in retracted, inoperative position within the casing and the brush being movable to operative, exposed position upon slight downward pressure of the powder compact against the brush head.

The foregoing objects as well as additional objects and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent in the course of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating several embodiments of the invention, and wherein:

Fig 1 is a front View, partly broken away to illustrate internal arrangement, of a powder compact casing and brush, the brush being shown in retracted, inoperative position and the powder compact being retained within the casing.

Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a front view showing the brush in operative, exposed position with the powder compact moved downwardly thereagainst within the casing.

Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a modilied form of powder compact casing and brush, the brush being held in xed, exposed position.

Fig. 5 is a front view of the modification shown in Fig. 4.

The casing or container is `formed from flex'- ible, pliable material such as fabrics offsilk orV the like, rubber, etc. and may be provided on its inner surface with soft, rleecy material to preventv mai-ring or scratching. the polished surfaces of the powder compact. l

in place in any desired manner, as by adhesives', tacks, staples or the like. .Rigid membery I2 is provided with a plurality of apertures I3 for slidably retaining the bristles I4 of a brush head I5 slidably mounted above member I2 within the casing I0. A pair of light-weight compression springs IS may be interposed between member I2 and brush head I5 adjacent the sides of cover I0 for normally urging brush head I5 and bristles I 4 upwardly to the retracted, inoperative position illustrated in Fig. 1. Springs I6 are prevented from buckling by being retained within aligned pairs of recesses I7, I? in member I2 and brush head I5 respectively.

Means are provided for limiting the upward movement of brush head I5 to prevent the retraction of bristles I 4 from the apertures I3 of member I2 and said means may take the form of a chain or retaining element I8 having its ends secured to brush head I5 and member I2 respectively. A pair of aligned recesses I9, I9 is provided to contain chain I8 when the brush head I5 and member I2 are in contact in the operative position of bristles Ill illustrated in Fig. 3.

The compact Il is normally held in the casing Il! in the position of Fig. 1 with the bristles I4 in concealed, retracted position partially within the interior of the casing and partially within the apertures I3 of xed member I2. When it is desired to use the brush for removing stray powder dust from the clothing, the top portion of casing Il] may be grasped and slight downward pressure exerted upon compact II to move brush head I5 down against iixed member I2, thereby carrying the bristles I4 to the exposed operative position of Fig. 3.

The modification of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 is somewhat simpler in construction than the initial embodiment of the invention and comprises a brush head 20 fixed at the bottom end of a flexible, pliable powder compactl casing 2|, said brush head carrying the bristles 22. Since the casing 2l is of flexible and pliable material, the brush cannot be used effectively unless a compactI 23 or the like is placed within the casing to impart rigidity thereto and adapting the casing to serve as a grasping means or handle for the brush head 20 and the bristles 23.

The article of Figs. 4 and 5 may be fabricated easily and simply by forming the casing 2| from exible, pliable material as a tubular vmember and then securing the brush head 20, carrying the bristles 22, in any desired manner.

Fig. 6 illustrates a comb case 25 provided with brush bristles 26 along one edge thereof so that said bristles may 'be applied to the clothing of the user, the comb case 25 together with Athe comb 2.1 retained therewithin serving as ahandie for the brush.

Since certain modifications may be made in the article of the invention without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter containedV in the foregoing description and shown in the vaccompanying drawing be interpreted merely as illustrated and not in a limiting sense.

What is Aclaimed is:

1. A pliable, tubular member, said member being adapted to receive a powder compact through one open end thereof, a rigid elementv secured to and closing the opposite end thereof, said element having a plurality of apertures therein, a movable brush head mounted within said member above said element, bristles carried 'by said brush head and slidably retained within said apertures, and. springs interposed between said element and said brush head to normally retract said bristles and said brush head to inoperative position with the free ends of the bristles lying within the plane of the outer surface of said rigid element, said brush head being movable against the tension of `said springs by downward movement of an inserted compact within said member against said `brush head to cause said bristles to project through the apertures of said element to assume an exposed, operative position.

2. A pliable, tubular member in accordance with claim 1, having stop means intersecured between said rigid element and said movable Vbrush head to limit the retraction of said brush head.
