W. R. LE'NARD.
v BALE-BAND REPLAGBR AND TIGHTENER; No. 260,402. Patented July 4, 1882.
M Z ZZeganZ- 7 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM B. LENARD', OF WAOO, TEXAS, AssIoNon OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN T. DONOVAN, OF SAME PLACE.
BALE-BAND REPLACER AND TIGHTE NER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 260,402, dated July 4, 1882.
Application filed June 1, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. LENARD, of Waco, McLennan county, State of Texas,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bale-Band Replacers and Tighteners; and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the device, the cover of the casing being removed; and Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
My invention has for its object "to provide a simple and convenient device for replacing a broken bale band, for tightening the band around the bale, and for drawing the ends together, so as to provide the necessary slack for slipping the loop out of the tie when it is desired to remove a band; and my invention consists in a device for the attainment of these ends, constructed and operating substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In the drawings, A is a casing, in which is pivoted a lever, a, and a. a are end pieces, through which passes a bar, B. To one end of the latter is secured, at right angles thereto, a bar, I), sharpened to a point at b. (J is a vertical standard, mounted on the bar b, and to it is pivoted a cam-lever, 0, having a serrated or roughened lower end adapted to press upon the part b. A spring, 0, coiled about the pivot, tends to rotate the lever, so as to bring its end upon the part b. A precisely similar arrangement of parts, I) b O c c,is formed on oneend of the casing A.
D is a block slotted for the passage of the bar B, and having a square bolt, 0, through the end of the slot, adapted to press on the edge of the bar. The block is pivoted at one end to a link, d, as shown. A spring, d, coiled between the block and the end piece a, serves to press the bolt 6 down on the bar B.
F is a link pivoted at f in a slot in the lever a, and E is a clutch pivoted to the link F, and
having a bolt, 6, adapted to engage with the 5 edge 'of the bar B.
The operation of the device in removing a bale-band is as follows: The points I) are inserted under the band at either side of the tie, and driven under it until the band is under 0 the cam-levers c. The latter are then tilted, jamming the band tightly upon the parts Z). The lever a is now moved in the direction of the arrow, causing the clutch E to jam on the bar B and drawing the parts b together. On 5 reversing the motion of the lever the block D clamps the bar B in the position to which the former motion of the lever 0. brought it. When the band is slack enough between the parts b it is slipped out of the tie, and the clutch E and block D are released from engagement with the bar; or one of the cam-levers is disengaged from the band.
In replacing a broken band, after riveting it, the band is brought around the bale and the ends are clamped under the cam-levers c, as before. The lever a. being worked back and forth, the ends of the band are drawn tightly together and are secured by a tie, as usual.
I Having thus described my invention, whatI 7o claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the casing having block D, the lever a, clutch E, having bolt 0, the sliding bar B, and cam-levers c, as set forth.
2. In combination with the bars b, having pointed ends b, the cam-levers c, springs 0, bar B, and easing A, provided with a clamp for engaging with the bar, a block, D, for securing it, and an actuating-lever, as set forth.
3. In combination with the cam-lever clamps and bar B, the slotted block D E, having bolts e e and the lever a, as set forth.
WILLIAM B. LENARD.
