This invention relates generally to concrete or similar type mixers having tiltable drums thereon, and more specifically to a brake means for combattin'g the tilting movement of said drum.
Mixers of the type above mentioned include generally a frame upon which is mounted a pivotable yoke member having a rotatable drum pivotally supported therein, with means provided for engaging and rotating the drum member, and tilting gears provided to swing or move the yoke in order to change the angular position of the drum mounted therein.
Under ordinary usage considerable looseness develops in the tilting gear which renders the drum dangerous in that it may without warning shift its load causing the drum to swing whereby it may injure the workmen operating the machine and/or lose a portion oi the material being mixed therein.
In addition, it is sometimes advantageous to be able to hold the drum; in one or more angular positions for the purpose ,of charging, mixing or cleaning the drum. e
Accordingly, the present invention contemplates a control coacting with the tilting gears, which includes brake means mountedabout at least one of the tilting gears, which is operated by a lever, cam and spring action.
It is an object of the present: invention to provide a control means for controlling the tilting movement of the drum on a cement or the like type mixer. a
It is another object of the present invention to provide a control means for controlling the tilting movement of the drum or a cement or the like type mixer which includes means mounted about and coacting with the tilting gear of the drum. I 7
With these and other objects in view, as may appear from the accompanying specification, the invention consists of various features of construction and combination of parts, which will be first described in connection with the accom- In the drawings the figures therein show the application of the invention to 'a cement or plaster type mixer, it "being understood, however, that applicant does not 'inten'd'to so limit the invention but that it is easily applicable to other similar type mixers.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, Figures 1 and 2 "show a main frame assembly I including 'a base or a-xle' member 2 in the horizontal plane and spaced uprights 3 and 4 in the vertical plane. The fra'me I is shown held in its desired position for operation by wheels 5 spring mounted on said axle member -2 and side supports 6 connected tothe uprights 3 and 4. The mixer may be moved by pulling "on thebail member 1 connected tothe frame assembly which will tilt the machine to the vertical position allowing it to mov'e'freely on the wheels 5.
The spaced uprights 3 and 4 have split bearings 8 disposed at their upperends-to provide means for mounting a yoke "member 9,, as is shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
Yoke member 9 is a substantially arcuate member having trunnions l0 onthe outermost ends of the arc, perpendicular to the center line thereof and extending laterally therefrom in axial alignment to provide means for mounting the yoke member 9 in the split bearings 8 dis posed on the ends of the spaced uprights 3 and 4.
A, mixing drum ll. substantially spherical in shape having a conical shaped charging and discharging opening at one end thereof, of which there are many well known types easily purchasable on the open market is adapted to be rotatably mounted as shown at lZin the yoke member 9. The rotatable mounting l2 providing means for holding the mixing drum H in a vertical axis so that it may be rotated inv a horizontal plane and allowing the mixing drum H to be tilted from the vertical as the yoke member 9 is rotated on the trunnions In, as hereinafter described.
The mixing drum ll may be rotated by any suitable type of driving means, whichincludes a prime mover not shown, as it doesnot form a part of the presentinvention. The prime mover is mounted in a housing l3 connected to and supported by the upright 3. It is connected to a pinion gear M which in turn engages a ring gear l5 mounted about the outer circumference of the mixing drum I. When the prime mover is in operation it rotates the pinion gear M which in turn drives the ring gear l5 causing the drum l I connected thereto to rotate, an of which is clearly shown in Figure 2 of the drawings.
Tilting years The means for tilting the mixing drum I I operates directly on the yoke member 9. However, since the mixing drum IIv is movable with the yoke member 9 as the yoke member, 9 is rotated back andfforth thefiiiixing drum II will move therewith.
Accordingly, Figures 1 and 2 show a tilt gear I6 located between the spaced upright 4 and the "site to the opening thereon, the arm directed yoke 9 on the more easily accessible side of the Y yoke member. The tilt gear I6 is a substantially hollow cylindrical hub-like member with gear teeth I! on the inner circumference. thereof-. One end of the tilt gear I6is open and the-other end is closed except for a bore of sufiicient diameter to receive one of the trunnions In therethrough and to provide means for connecting the tilt gear I6 to the yoke 9 and a spur support I8 provided on the end thereof by suitable means such as bolts I9 wherebythe tilt gear I6 when rotated as hereinafter described by thehandwheel assembly will move or rotate the yoke member 9 on its trunnions I0.-
The hand wheel assembly for-operating the tilt gear I6 includes a bearing pin or shaft .2il fitted into a bearing and support structure 2 I therefor which ismounted to extend through the spaced upright 4 by meansof aflange 22 connected thereto and bolts 23 connecting the flange 22 to the spaced upright 4. The outer end of the shaft 20v isprovided with suitable threaded and keying means whereby a hand wheel 24 can be fixedly connected thereto bymeans of a handwheellocking nut .25. The shaft 20 extends past the bearing and support structure 2I to lie inside tilt gear I 6;- in close proximity with the gear teeth I! thereon, sothat the teeth or connecting gear 26,- fixedly connected to the inner end of shaft 20 and movable therewith will be in contact and mesh with the gear teeth I! whenever the shaft 20 is rotated by means of thehand wheel 24. It being obvious that when the teeth mesh that tiltgear I6 will be rotated causing the yoke 9 to whichit isfixedly connected to rotateback and forth therewith,- in turn causing the mixing drum to'tilt, all of which is clearly shown .by Figures 1 andz-of the drawings.
Braking means to control the tilt gear 16 Rotation of the yoke 9 will control the tilting 1 stantially circular band-like member 'open at one point to form outwardly extending cars 28 and 29. Brake band 21 is held free or loosely mounted on the outer circumference of the tilt gear I6, and connected to the brake band for controlled contact with said outer circumference as hereinafter described is any suitable type of brake lining material 30, of which there are many well known types easily purchasable on v the open market. It is understood that while the present invention shows the outer circumference of the tilt gear I6 as being substantially to extend downwardly to abut the tilt gear I 6 when the brake band is in operation to prevent the brake band from slipping off of the tilt gear in the lateral direction. It is understood that while this type of bracket means to prevent slipping of the brake band is shown that other means embodying the same idea may be utilized for this purpose. a
Figure 3 shows the ears 28 and 29 extending downwardly so that ear 28 will be adjacent opsmooth, that'the surface may be adapted to receive suitable material or be changed'whereby the frictional contact with the brake lining material- 30 may be increased or decreased as conditionsmayrequireg' 4 I erating shaft bracket 32 mounted on a lateral extension 33 formed on the spaced upright 3, and openings provided on the ears 28 and 29, respectively, will be in alignment with each other and with an opening 34 on the operatingshaft bracket 32.
Operating shaft 35 to operate the brake band 21 is an elongated member having a cylindrical ring-shaped cam following member 36 at one end in the axial line of the shaft. The other end of the operating shaft 35 is threaded which allows the shaft to be slidably mounted in the opening 34 of the operating shaft bracket 32 and to pass through the openings in alignment therewith in the ears 29 and 29 where it will be threadably connected outwardly thereof to an adjusting nut 31. In order to hold the adjusting nut in its desired position a washer member 38 and a looking nut 39 are provided therefor. The brake band will be held free or loosely about the tilt gear I6 by a separating spring 46 mounted about the'operating shaft 35 between the ears 28 and 29 which normally' in tension will abut and hold open the ears- 28 and -29 and,- in addition, force them open whenever the spring is released duringjoperation of the operating shaft 35 as hereinafterdesr'n ibed. v
The ring-shaped cam following member 36 on the operating shaftf35' -provides means for moving the operating "shaft in a lateraldirec- ,tion. Thus Figure '3 shows a cylindricallyshaped cam member 4| rotatably mounted in said ring shaped cam following member 36 having an eccentric bore 42 therein. Cam 4I provides an operative connection between said operating shaft 35 and a manually operated L- shaped cam lever 43which is fixedly connected in said eccentric bore 42 by means ofa set screw 44. The cam lever 43 is pivotally mounted in the cam lever support 45 formed on the lateral extension 33 so that one leg of the L shaped portion extends downwardly. i g
In operation, the cam lever 43 is grasped manually and pushed causing the cam, M to rotate inside the cam following member 36. However, since the cam M has an 'eccentricbore 42 .therein as" it rotates it will movethecam follower 36 in the lateral direction along agsubstantially horizontal plane. Since, however, the operating shaft 35 is fixedly connected thereto it will move laterally causing the adjusting nut 31 and washer 38 to abut andmove 'th-egear 29 towards the ear 28 which is prevented from moving as it abuts the operating shaft bracket 32. Thus, separating spring 40-will becompressed and the brake band 21 will be tightened about ber 43 is released the separating spring 40 will,
expand separating the ears 28 and 29 releasin the frictiona1 engagement between the tilt gear and the lining 30 in the brake band. The
' amount of pressure exerted by the brake band 21 is a function of the manual pressure exerted on the cam lever 43.
It appears obvious that if it is desired to hold the mixing drum II in any desired angular position that the tilt gear [6 will be manually adjusted by operating the hand wheel 24 until the yoke 9 and mixing drum II are moved to the desired angle, and that suflicient manual pressure exerted thereafter on the cam lever 43 will hold the drum II in this position because the tilt gear I6 will be prevented from rotating in either direction until the lever 43 is released.
While it is not shown, it is believed to be a. mere mechanical expedient to provide means for locking the manually operated cam lever when it is desired to hold the drum at some given angular position, for example a notched plate into which the cam lever 43 may be seated.
While one form of the invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that the invention is not to be limited to the 6 specific construction and arrangement of parts shown, but that they may be widely modified within the invention defined by the claim.
What is claimed is:
In a mixer, a supporting structure, a drumcarrying yoke, trunnions on said yoke and engaging said supporting structure for pivotally supporting the yoke, an internally toothed tilting gearmounted on oneof said trunnions, a brake band about the periphery of said tilting gear, said brake band being split and having a pair of radial ears thereon, means for anchoring one of said ears, a rod connected to the unanchored ear, an eccentric connected to said rod, and a lever connected to the eccentric for rotating the eccentric to move said unanchored ear for tightening or loosening said brake band.
