The present invention relates to an arrangement with the so-called stakers, i. e. machines for stretching, removal of creases or wrinkles and the softening of skins for gloves, clothing, and furs, and the object of the invention is to produce an improved design and construction of such machines, making it possible in one and the same working operation to effect not only the stretching, removal of creases or wrinkles and softening of the skins, but also simultaneously to carry out the grinding process also forming part of the treatment procedure of the skins, and for which later work a separate operation with the use of a separate machine has hitherto been necessary.

The invention is characterised in that the stretching and softening machine consists of a rotatable drum which is provided at its periphery with the elements for treating the skins, consisting partly of, parallel with the longitudinal axis of the drum, radially directed knife blades or groups of knife blades with rounded or bevelled edges, partly with the said knives or groups of knives alternating with blocks in the spaces between them around the drum, these blocks or the like being provided with a grinding surface.

Considerable advantages are obtained by this construction, which in particular consists in rationalising the widths of skin, and in addition a considerable improvement in the quality of the skins is obtained, as thanks to the grinding blocks an effective stretching of the skins is obtained by the increased friction, besides which, by grinding away the fleshy side of the skin, simultaneously with the stretching, a more effective and quicker stretching and softening of the skin is obtained.

The invention is illustrated in the attached drawing in one form of construction as an example.

Figure 1 shows the machine seen from the side.

Figure 2 is a cross-section through it.

The machine is provided with a frame with two vertical supports 1, in which a horizontal shaft 5 is rotatably fixed in ball bearings 3, which shaft by means of an elastic coupling 6, is driven through a gear I, by means of an electric motor 8, with coupling, whereby the gear and motor are placed on a separate frame.

The staking wheel is fixed concentrically on the shaft 5, and according to the invention consists of a cylindrical drum, on the periphery of which the elements for treating the skins are securely fixed. These working elements are of two kinds, namely, on the one hand five groups each of three blades H, radially directed outwards and parallel with the longitudinal axis of the drum, with rounded or bevelled edges, and on the other hand, blocks I 2 with a slightly rounded surface 53, placed in between each such group of knife blades. This surface It, is so formed or is provided with such suitable covering or casing, that it can exercise a grinding action. As indicated in Fig. 1, both the knife blades H, and the blocks l2 are made with a concave curvature, so that the staking wheel acquires a barrel shaped external contour.

The skin M, is pressed against a curved support securely fixed to the frame I and extending over the staking wheel and is pressed against the knife blades H, and the grinding surfaces It of the grinding blocks l2, when the staking wheel rotates, whereby the knife blades stretch and soften the skin and remove any creases or wrinkles present, at the same time as the blocks effect the grinding.

Of course various modifications in the form of the machine could be carried out without exceeding the frame of the invention, in that for e. g. the number of knife blades in each group as well as the distance between the different groups or the dimensions of the blocks can be varied within certain limits. It is also conceivable that several blocks are arranged between each group of knife blades.

I claim:

1. Staking wheel for stretching, removing creases and wrinkles from, and softening skins for gloves, clothing, and furs, having a rotatably mounted drum, and working elements at the periphery of the said drum consisting of knife blades radially directed outwards and parallel to the longitudinal axis of the drum, blocks fixed at regular intervals between the said knife blades around the circumference of the drum, and a grinding surface for each said block.

2. A staking wheel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the knife blades have rounded edges.

3. A staking wheel as claimed in claim 2 wherein the knife blades are arranged in groups, and the blocks are arranged between the said groups.

4. A staking wheel as claimed in claim 1 wherein the knife blades have bevelled edges.

5. A staking wheel as claimed in claim 4 wherein the knife blades are arranged in groups and the blocks are arranged between the said groups.
