Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spreading Rolls tor Ilide-lVorking Machines. oi: which the Following is a specification, re'lerence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention has relation in general to machines for treating hides and skins, such as 'tleshing machines, unhairingr machines, putting-out i'i'lachines, wringers, and others of the like class; and in particular to devices for spreading and flattening the hides or skins while they are undergoing treatment in such machines.

The obiect of the invention is to provide improved means for straightening out and spreading a hide or skin in a machine ot the said class at points where fullness presents itself, and in particular for straightening out or spreading the shanks and neck of the stock, whereby to eliminate tendency of these parts to pleat and crease as they pass between the bedroll and the working cylinder, and thereby remove danger of damaging the grain.

The invention comprises the combination with a working cylinder, and a working} support for the hide being treated, movable into working relations with said cylinder and separable therefrom to permit the hide or skin to be introduced. between them. of a spreading roll also movable into open and closed relations with the working cylinder, adapted to press the hide or skin against the surface of the working cylinder, and rotating reversely with respect to the direc tion of movement of the hide.

An illustrative embodiment of the invention is represented in the drawing. in which Fig. 1 is a view in vertical section from tlroiit to rear of a machine having the said embodiment incorporated therein. Figs. 2 and 3 are sectional views showing modifications. i

working parts of the u'iachine, the said end frames as usual sustaining: the bearings for the diit'erentrolls and cylinders which op crate on the hides or skins. These parts in this instance comprise a working cylinder 2, as it is called, having a helically bladed pe riphery ot a character suitable for the pert'orn'iance of the particular type of work upon the hide or skin for which the machine is intended, a bed-roll 3 serving as a movable support for the hide or skin to hold it up to the action of? the working cylinder 2, and lee(l-rolls 4L, 4. against which by the bed-roll 3 the hideor skin is clamped so as to hold the same securely while being acted upon by the working cyl nder. Tn usual. practice, as is well known. the bed-roll 3 is covered with a cushion of rubber, and by its rota tion in unison with the teed-rolls 4-, 4-, the hide is fed relative to the workinp cylinder 2 so as to cause all portions of the hide to be acted upon by the said cylinder. "The directions in which the working cylinder and the respective rolls are rotated, and in which the hide or skin is fed, are indicated by arrows.

To provide "tor the convenient introduction of the hide or skin into position to be operated upon, the rolls of machines of the type dealt with herein usually are made cw pable ol movement hodily relative to one another, so as to enable them to be se 'mrated for convenient insertion ol' the hide, and then closed together to cause the hide to be acted upon. The particular roll that is mounted l'or ino'ven'ieut is the bed-roll 3 in.

the case of the illustrated mechanism. For allowing this movement, the bearings or journal-boxes 5 in which the shaft 6 of the bed-roll 3 revolves are adapted to move back and forth within ways or guides 8 in the end-frames. The means for effecting the movement in question at the will of the op erator is not shown, inasmuch as it is not a part of the present invention. It may comprise in practice any one of the arrangements known in the art.

In carrying the invention into effect I employ a spreading roll 19, which I locate in such relation to the bed-roll 8 as will provide for smoothing out and spreading the hide to present it flat and free from wrinkles to the action 01 the wolmnc cylinder 2 as it passes between the said cylinder and the bed-roll 3. In the illustrated machine, this spreading roll 19 placed below the bedroll 3 and is arranged so that when the bedroll and spreading roll occupy their closed position, as in the ,l'!l\\l1l the spreading roll holds the hide or skin in contact with the working cylinder 27 Inasmuch as the hide or skin must be entered between the said spreading roll 19 and the working cylinder, provision is made for separating these two by mounting the spreading roll upon swinging arms 20 which are mounted to swing on centers near the bottom of the machine; in the present instance concentrically with the shatt 21. To move the sgreadin roll 19 toward and away from the working cylinder, in unison with the bed-roll, the arms 20 in this instance are formed with :lorks, indicated at 23. which fit portions or the joinrnal-boxes 5 of the bed-roll shaft 6, so that moven'ient ot the bed-roll 3 will e accompanied by simultaneous bodily movement of the spreading roll 19.

The spreading roll is preferably covered with rubber. In accordance with the invention, it is rotated to cause its periphery to move in a direction opposite to the direction of travel of the hide, so as to render it eitective in smoothing out any wrinkles or folds, spreading out slack places, and properly disposing the neck and shanks or the hide or skin. To provide for such rotation, it is mounted in this instance in journal-boxes or bearings 24 in connection with the swinging arms 20. and equipped with a V-grooved pulley 3O fixed upon its shaft 301, around which pulley runs a V-belt 300 driven by a second J- grooved pulley, 302, fixed on the rotating! shaft 21, and kept tight by a binder sheave 31 carried on an arm 32 adjustably clamped to one of the swinging arms 20. This belt rotates the spread ing roll in the direction indicated by the arrow, namely so that its periphery moves oppositely with respect to the direction of movement of the hide or skin in being fed by the action of the bedroll and teed-rolls. In order that the spreading roll may bear the hide or skin .'icldingly against the blades of the working cylinder, the journal-boxes or bearings 2t are backed up by springs confined within caps 26 which are secured to the arms 20 by

27, 27; the journat boxes or bearings 24: being equipped with spindles 28 which project through the tops of caps 26 and have nuts 29 applied outside said caps, to constitute stops to limit the movement of the journal-boxes or bearings within their guideways under the push of their springs. This yielding mounting; of the journal-boxes or bearings ot the spreading roll, together with the rubber covering thereon, prevents injury to the hide or skin which is being operated upon, through the jamming of folds, thick places,

or other irregularities of the hide between the spreading roll and the working cylinder.

The positioning of the spreading roll so that it will have working relations with the working cylinder 2 at a point somewhat in advance of the bite or line of engagement between the bed-roll 3 and the working cylinder, gives the hide or skin an opportunity to flatten out under the action oi the spreading roll before being compressed be tween the said rolland the working cylinder, as well as causes the working cylinder to do work upon the hide or skin at the point of tangency of the spreading roll therewith, and in addition over the entire area of hide between said point and the bite of the bed-roll and the working cylinder.

The approach of the spreading roll to the working cylinder is so limited that the periphery of the spreading! roll is prevented from actual contact with that of the work ing cylinder.

Fig. 2 shows a spreading roll ltlt having a brush-like periphery. Fig. 3 shows one, 192, having its periphery constituted by a series of blades.

What I claim as my invention is,--

1. The combination with a working cylinder, and a work-support against which the working cylinder operates in acting upon :1. hide or skin, movable into working relations against said cylinder and separable therefrom to permit a hide or skin to be introduced between them, of a spreading roll by which the hide or skin is. pressed against the surface of the working cylinder in advance of the squeeze between the work-support and said cylinder, and means for producing reverse ruliibing and spreading action of said spreading roll upon the portion oi hide or skin approaching said squeeze.

- The combination with a helical work cylinder, and a work-support and backing: against which the working cylinder operates in acting: upon the hide or skin. movable into working; relations against said cylinder and separable therefrom to permit :1. hide or skin to be introduced between them, of a spreading roll adapted to press the hide or skin against the working cylinder, similarly movable and separable. and driving; means "for rotating said roll to act upon the hide or skin revcrsely with respect to the direction of rotation ofthe working cylinder.

3. The combination with a working cylinder, and a support for a hide or skin being treated, movable into open relations with respect to said cylinder and also into closed relations against the latter, of a spreading r adapted to press the hide or skin against the working cylinder, also movable into open position and into closed relation with the said cylinder, and means for rotating said roll to act rmersely upon the hide or skin while being fed through the machine.

4:. The combination with a working cyl- :inder, and a support -for a hide or skin being treated, movable into open relations with respect to said working cylinder and;

also into closed relations against the latter, of a spreading roll and means for rotating the same to act upon the hide or skin reversely with respect to the direction of travel ot the hideor skin while being operated ipon by the working cylinder, said spreading roll operably combined with said niov 1 able support to be moved toward the working cylinder to press the hide or skin into engagement therewith, or away therefrom, up on corresponding movements of the movable support.
