This invention relates to razors and cutting implements of the safety razor type, andin particular includes a handle, a blade holder and (Cl. eo-ee) a guard, wherein single or double edge blades may bereadily attached to the end of the handle with the blade positioned perpendicular to the axis of thehandle, or aligned therewith.
Although. razor blades are distributed universally through numbers of merchandising channels, there are times when it is not convenient, and sometimes impossible, to obtain the desired type of blades.
With this thought in mind, the invention contemplates a combination of elements which comprises a safety razor in which either a single or double edge blade may be used, and in which the blade may be held for shaving or cutting either perpendicular to the axis of the handle, or extending straightoutward from the end thereof.
The purpose of this invention is to provide a safetyv razor in which either a single or double edge blade may be used and which may be used for shaving, cutting, scraping, or stropping or honing.
Substantially every one is at some time confronted with the necessity of using a safety razor blade as a knife, and for this reason, the combination safety razor of this invention includes means for holding the blade for shaving, and the parts are also constructed wherein they may be turnedto hold the blade lengthwise of the handle, so that it may be used as a knife.
. The object of the invention is, therefore, to providea blade holder in which either single or double edge blades may be held, which may be used in combination with a shaving guard and which may be attached to the end of a handle to hold a blade perpendicular to the handle, or turned and attached to the end of the handle to hold the blade extending straight outward from the handle.
Another object of the invention is to provide a clip that may be removably attached to one edge of a double edge razor blade to form a backing member therefor so that the blade may be held in a holder designed to hold single edge blades.
' Another object of the invention is to provide aholderfor safety razor blades by which the headof a safety razor may be turned with the blade extending straight from the handle to form a knife;
Another Object-of the invention is to provide a blade holder for safety razors that may be Lil used incombination with a guard, or that is adapted for use with the guard omitted.
Another object of the invention is to provide an attachment for razors and the like through which the device may be used as a straight razor, safety razor, scraper for paint and the like, and also in which the blade may readily be held for honing and strapping.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combination straight and safety razor which is of a simple and economical construction.
With these and other objects in view, the invention includes a handle having a threaded stud extending from one end, a blade holder in the form of a U-shaped clamp with a centrally disposed threaded socket in one side and another threaded socket in one end, a guard adapted to be positioned between the blade holder and handle, and a clip adapted to be positioned over one edge of a double edge razor blade to provide a backing therefor.
Other features and advantages of the invention will appear. from the following description taken in connection with the drawings, wherein:
Figure l is a view showing a side elevation of the combination razor with the parts assembled to hold the blade perpendicular to the axis of the handle.
Figure 2 is a view showing an end elevation of the razor illustrated in Figure 1', looking toward the blade-holding end thereof.
Figure 3 is a View showing a side elevation of the combination razor with the blade mounted on the handle so that it extends straight outward from an end thereof.
Figure 4 is a detail showing the blade holder.
Figure 5 is a detail showing the guard adapted to be used in combination with the holder and blade.
Figure 6 is a view showing a clip mounted on one edge of a double edge razor blade providing a backing therefor.
Figure 7 is a view looking toward an edge of the clip with the parts sprung open or in the free positions.
Figure 8 is a modified form showing the holder with afioating safety guard mounted on extending bosses at the ends thereof.
Figure v9 is a detail showing the floating safety guard.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts, the combination-razor of this invention includes a handle [0, ablade holder II, a guard I2, and a clip [3.
The handle It! may be of any suitable size or configuration, wherein it is adapted to be comfortably held in the hand for shaving, cutting and the like. At one end of the handle is a threaded stud [4 adapted to be screwed into a threaded socket [5 in the side of the holder I I when it is desired to use the device as a safety razor, and the stud may also be screwed into a threaded socket IS in the end of a cylinder ll of the holder, as'shown in Figure 3, when it is desired to use the device as a knife for cuttin and the like, or for sharpening, honing or stropping the blade.
The cylinder I! of the holder H is provided with keepers l8 and I9 arranged in spaced relation and dependingly carried by said cylinder, the keepers having inwardly extending lips 23 and 2| on their ends. The lips and 2| are spaced from each other so as to provide a slot 22 for frictionally holding a safety razor blade therebetween. The space intermediate the keepers l8 and I9 forms'a longitudinally extending slot 23 for the reception therein of a backing element. In the design shown in Figure 1, a razor blade .24 is shown projecting below .the slot 22 with a backing. element 25 positioned in the slot 23.
A shaving guard 12 is illustrated in Figure 5, and this may be positioned over the blade, as illustrated in Figure 1, with clips 26 and 21 at the lower edge extending around the corners of the blade, and with a semi-circular portion 28 at the upper edge extending over the side of the cylinder ll of the holder. The part 28 is provided with a socket 29 through which the stud I 4 of the handle If! extends, as shown in Figure l. The lower edge of the guard is provided with a skin-stretching bar 30 and an opening 3| may be. provided above the bar, the portion of the exterior of the surface of the bar 33,'engaging the skin of the razor user; being smooth and straight. The edges 'of the bar may be provided with notches 32 .and 33 to correspond with notches in the ends of razor blades. The guard i2.is particularly adapted foruse with the devicewhen it is used as a safety razor, and may be omitted when the blade is positioned so that it extends straight from the end of the handle, as shown in Figure 3, wherein the device maybe used as a knife or the like.
