SAFETY RAZOR Filed Dec. 26, 1944 E llilllll IN VEN TOR.
Rollin C. Mrvzer Patented Dec. 25, 1945 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SAFETY RAZOR Rollin C. Warner, New York, N. Y.
Application December 26, 1944, Serial No. 569,706
Claims. (01; 30 -68) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a safety razor.
More specifically, the invention proposes the provision of a razor characterized by a hollow ground razor blade supported in a superimposed position with a guard, each of which is provided with a tapered opening, with said openings aligned in a manner to receive the end of a handle by which the razor may be manipulated for shaving.
Still another object of the invention proposes providing the hollow ground blade with a longi-- tudinal tapered hole in its back portion by which it may be engaged endwise upon the handle when disengaged from the guard in a manner to permit the razor to be conveniently manipulated by the handle for stropping and housing.
Another object of the invention proposes constructing the handle of single piece of metal consisting of a handle proper which continues into a tapered stem upon which the razor and guard are adapted to be mounted.
It is a further object of this invention to construct a new razor with a hollow ground blade which is simple and durable and which may be manufactured and sold at a reasonable cost.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.
In the accompanying drawing forming a material part of this disclosure:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a razorconstructed in accordance with this invention.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the hollow razor blade in position upon the handle when it is desired to strop or hone the razor.
Fig. 3 is a side elevational view of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the guard per se.
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the handle per se.
Fig. 6 is a plan view of the razor blade per se.
Fig.7 is an end elevational view of Fig. 6.
The razor, according to this invention, includes a hollow ground razor blade l0 having a tapered opening ll extending up and down through its back and a second tapered opening l2 extended longitudinally through its back from each end of of the guard l3 are provided with lugs l6 which overlap and grip the ends of the blade Ill. The back of the guard I3 is further provided with an upwardly extending lug [1 which projects along the back of the blade 10.
A handle I8 is provided for use with the blade l0 and the guard l3 and has a tapered shank H! which is adapted to be frictionally extended through the aligned openings I l and M for fixedly supporting the blade Ill and the guard I3 in position upon the handle I8.
The blade may be used in connection with the guard l3 as shown in Fig. 1 to function after the manner of a conventional razor blade. However, the blade l0 may be engaged on the handle l8 independently of the guard, in which case the tapered shank IQ of the handle 18 is extended into one of the end openings [2, as shown in Fig. 2, permitting the razor to be stropped or honed.
To relieve binding between the walls of the end opening l2 and the shank l9 when engaged with each other as shown in Fig. 2, the center 20 of the shank I9 is ground away providing relief between the walls of the shank l9 and the opening l2.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the precise construction herein disclosed and the right is reserved to all changes and modifications coming within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A razor comprising a hollow ground razor blade having a tapered opening extending up and down through its back and two tapered openings extending longitudinally through its back inwardly from each end, a guard disposed beneath said blade having a tapered opening aligned with said first named tapered opening, and a handle having a tapered shank frictionally extending through said aligned openings for fixedly supporting said blade and guard.
2. A razor comprising a hollow ground razor blade having a tapered opening extending up and down through its back and two tapered openings extending longitudinally through its back from each end, a guard disposed beneath said blade and having a tapered opening aligned with said first named tapered opening, and a handle having a tapered shank frictionally extending through said aligned openings for fixedly supporting said blade and guard, said tapered openings being extended inwards from each of its ends.
3. A razor comprising a hollow ground razor blade having a tapered opening extending up and down through its back and another tapered opening extending longitudinally through its back from each end inwardly, a guard disposed beneath said blade and having a tapered opening aligned with said first named tapered opening, and a handle having a tapered shank frictionally extending through said aligned openings for fixedly supporting said blade and guard, and lugs on said guard for gripping said blade.
4. A razor comprising a hollow ground razor blade having a tapered opening extending up and down through its back and another tapered opening extending longitudinally through its back from each end, inwardly, a guard disposed beneath said blade and having a tapered opening aligned with said first named tapered opening, and a handle having a tapered shank frictionally extending through said aligned openings for fixedly supporting said blade and guard, and side lugs on said guard for gripping said blade, and a back lug.
5. A razor comprising a hollow ground razor blade having a tapered opening extending up and down through its back and another tapered open.. ing extending longitudinally through its back from each end, inwardly, a guard disposed beneath said blade and having a tapered opening aligned with said first named tapered opening, and a handle having a, tapered shank frictionally extending through said aligned openings for fixedly supporting said blade and guard, said shank having its center undercut.
