2 Claims. (Cl. 30-45) 1 This invention relates ingeneral to a cutlery device and more particularly to a power driven device employing a reciprocating cutting member.
While the fundamentals of the invention about to be described are adaptable in many types of cutlery device, for purpose of illustration, there will be described in particular as it is applied to an-electrical operated razor.
Among the improvements and differentiating characteristics of the particular razor are the provisions of a hinged head to receive a removable cutting member and holding the cutting member under tension during the cutting operation.
The details of the invention will become more apparent from the following specification and the appended claims, certain embodiments thereof being illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view in section of the new improved razor;
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of the reciprocating member with the cutting member removed therefrom; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view with portions broken away of the upper and of the oscillatable arm and the reciprocating blade holding member.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the casing It) may take any desired shape and may be provided with an opening I l inwhich is positioned insulating member l2 that supports the electrical contact members l3 to which a suitable cord (not shown) may be readily attached. Extending from the contact members l3 are conductors M which connect to a suitable electrical motor having a rotator I5 which is mounted upon a suitable shaft IS. on the shaft It may be mounted hand starting wheel, if a type of motor is used which requires starting in certain positions. Adapted to cooperate with the shaft I6 is reciprocating member ll which is provided with a yoke l8. This yoke l'8 sits over a cam-like member 9 on the shaft l6 and translates the rotary motion into reciprocating motion. Member I1 is oscillatorily mounted in substantially rectangular housing 2|. Shaft l9 extends through member I1 and the ends 20 extend to the outside at least on one side or the housing 2| so that the shaft may be readily assembled or disassembled. The upper end of member I! terminates in a reduced portion 22. This reduced portion passes into an opening or is otherwise arranged to give reciprocating motion to blade carrier 23.
The blade carrier has legs 36 that extending inside or the housing 2| forming guides in the channel or opening. The extent of the travel of the blade carrier to and fro is directed by the movement of member 22.
r The reciprocating member 23 is provided with raised portions 21 and 28. The raised portion 28 terminates substantially at the end of the reciprocating member 23 while the raised portion '21 extends beyond the opposite end of the member 23. This holds the'blade in position and prevents its accidentaly displacement. Formed integral with housing 2| are trough-like members 24 which are formed and shaped as shown in Figure 1. It is to be understood thatmembers 24 need not be formed integral with housing 2|. When the blade 29 is positioned upon the reciprocating member 23 the hinge head 25, when in the closed position, holds the blade under tension substantially in the shape as shown in Figure 1. For locking the head member 25 in place, there is provided on the free end of the member 25 a hook-like member 30 which cooperates with member 3| for locking the head in position. It is to be understood that other types of locking means may be used to hold head 25 in the closed position but the arrangement shown in Figures 2 and 3 gives the best results so far obtained.
A housing 2| has substantially horizontal extending members 38 and on one of these members is secured a metal member 33 by means of a threaded screw member 34. The member 33 extends substantially parallel with the horizontal extending member to adjacent the outer end thereof where it is bent upwardly and formed into a latch head holding are 32. The latch 3| is supported by the are 32 and extends downwardly therefrom. The latch 3| cooperates with the hook latch 30, holding the head 25 in closed position.
The rectangular housing 2| is suitably secured to the housing or casing ID. A blade such as 29 may be used on the blade carrier 23. The reduced portion 22 is pivotally attached to ears 40 extending from the blade carrier by suitable means such as pin 42. In practice, the central ear 40 is formed with compensation slotting (vertical in Fig. 3) for pin 42 as usually employed when translating arcuate motion into rectilinear motion.
What is claimed:
1. A shaving appliance comprising a casing, forming the body and gripping portion of the appliance, said casing having an end portion formed for removable connection with a source of current supply and having its opposite end Provided with a blade carrying head, an electric motor mounted internally of the body with its shaft axis of rotation extending transversely of a mid portion of the length of and in the direction of depth of the body, the head end of the body being slotted at right angles to such motor axis, a rectangular member fixedly mounted in such slotted head end to form a support for such head and for operatively connecting the motor shaft with the head, said head including a two part composite unit with one of the parts in the form of a pair of members in spaced parallelism and se cured to the rectangular member and connected at one end, the other part of the composite unit being in the form of a cover plate pivotally mounted on such end connection andadapted to be moved toward and from a position overlying said first part of the unit, said composite unit members providing therebetween a passageway for the service reciprocating movement 01' the blade and its supporting carrier relative to the composite unit, said blade carrier being mounted for reciprocating movement on the first part of the composite unit and havingv means for fixedly mounting the blade thereon, said operative connections including a lever pivotallyconnected intermediate its ends with said rectangular memberysaid lever having one of its ends cooperative with the motor shaft-for oscillating the. lever, the opposite end of the lever being operatively connected to the underside of theblade carrier'to thereby translate the oscillations of the lever into reciprocations of the blade and its such passageway.
