Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDERICK BECK, OF NEW YORK. N. Y.
MATERIAL FOR THE DECORATION OF THE INTERIOR WALLS AND CEILINGS 0F BUILDINGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 260,152, dated June 27, 1882.
' Application filed January 13, 1882. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK BEoK, of the city and county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Materials for the Decoration of the Interior Walls and Ceilings of Houses, of which the following is a specification My invention consists in attaching to tinfoil a paper backing and embossing the combined materials in any desired pattern.
The mode of manufacturing my improved material is as follows: I take a heavy quality of wall-paper, or two or more thicknesses attached together by paste or glue, and having, coated the surface of the paper backing with an adhesive compound suitable for the purpose, for which may be used a thick flour-paste of about the consistency of binders paste, in which has been thoroughly mixed a little resin and glycerine, I lay upon the coated surface of the paper a sheet of tin-foil, which is pressed down upon the paper gently and firmly, so that the surplus paste may be squeezed out at the edges and the tin foil be firmly united to the paper. The compound material is then placed between male and female dies, engraved in any desired design, and embossed in the usual manner of embossing thick card-board.
The metal surface may,it' desired,be painted or gilded, or treated by the well-known electro processes, whereby it is covered with a thin coating of copper, gold, or other metals, and an appearance of antique copper or of old hammered brass and other beautiful metallic effects may be produced.
The material thus made may be attached to walls or ceilings by means of paste or glue in the manner in which paper-hangings are otdi: narily attached, as it possesses a great degree of flexibility and is capable of being readily cut by the shears. It is very light and may be even folded double without breaking or cracking.
Heretofore slabs, panels, and sheets of fabric have been faced with a composition consisting ofoxidi'zed or solidified oils made of kauri gum, resin, wood fiber, white lead, and Venetian red, which composition is applied to the slabs, panels, or sheets in a plastic condition, and then ornamented by dies or rollers. Such a facing is, however, essentially different from my invention, in that I back or line a sheet of ordinary tin-foil with paper or other equivalent material, the two being united by an adhesive substance and ornamented by embossing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, afabri'c consisting of a sheet of tin-foil and a backing or lining-of paper or its equivalent material, the two united by an adhesive substance or substances and embossed, substantially as described.
FR. BECK.
