G. JORDAN.
WALL COVERING. No. 325,090. Patented Aug. 25, 1885.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE JORDAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y-
WALL-COVERING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,090, dated August 25, 1885.
Application filed June 1, 1885. (N0 model.). i
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE JORDAN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVall-Govering, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improved wall covering that is intended to be used in place of the more expensive embossed wallcoverings heretofore in use; and the invention consists of a wall-covering made of a plastic composition of molasses or other saccharine matter, Venetian turpentine, chalk, and fibers, which composition is rolled out into sheets and embossed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front view, and Fig. 2 a horizonv tal section on line as .r, Fig. l, of my improved wall-covering.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In making my improved wall-covering a plastic composition is prepared of twenty pounds of common molasses, sirnp, or any other saccharine solution of suitable consistency, two pounds ofVenetianturpentine, forty eight pounds of chalk, and about two ounces of flax or other suitable fibers, together with pigments in proper quantities to impart the desired color. These substances are thoroughly mixed together, after which the mass isrolledoutin sheets, which are passed through between a smooth roll and an embossing-roll, whereby the face is embossed, while the b ck remains fiat. The embossed face is then bronzed directly without requiring any extra sizing for the same. The bronze serves as a groundwork for other colors. The plastic mass may also be made up of diiferent colors and mixed together in imitation of marble. The fiat back of the embossed sheets are coated with an adhesive solution of glue and glycerine or varnish, and then coated with a thin layer of fibers, which serve to produce the better adhesion of the wall-covering when applying it to the wall. The sheets are allowed to dry for about a week or so, when they are ready for use. They are applied by being pasted to the wall like ordinary wall-paper, and can be used directly on the first coating of plastering, so as to save the so'called hard finishing of the wall.
The advantages of my improved wall-covering are, that it can be manufactured cheaply in a great variety of colors and designs, that it is tire-proof, and that it is a bad conductor of sound, so that it is a deafening on the partition-walls to which it'is applied.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A wall-covering consisting of embossed sheets of plastic material having an adhesive coating at the back anda film of fibers spread over said coating, substantially as set forth.
2. The composition for a wall-covering herein described, consisting of a mixture of molasses, Venetian turpentine, chalk, and fibers, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in pres ence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE JORDAN.
Witnesses CARL KARI SIDNEY MANN.
