BY WM Patented June 3, 1952 BUILDING MECHAN ISM Fon PACKAGES YAR Gordon Haldane Pimley, Preston, England, as-
signor to Dobson & Barlow Limited, Bolton,
England 7 Application October 1, 1949, Serial No. 119,042
In Great Britain May 11, 1949 2 Claims. (Cl. 242158) This invention has reference to building mechanism for package of textile yarns in textile machines wherein yarn is built into packages on bobbins, tubes or the like mounted on vertical spindles, by the up and down reciprocation or traverse of a device such as a ring rail, the general construction of such machines being well known and understood in the textile industry though the machines are not all alike in detail and are known under many names.
The present invention has for its object to provide improved mechanism for controlling the traverse of the ring rail or of the spindle rail which shall be more efficient than mechanism used at present for this purpose and which is especially useful for the building of large packages of rayon, though not limited to such use, whereby better packages are built and variations in the type and shape of the packages are easily and exactly effected, the mechanism being strong and of comparatively simple construction.
According to this invention yarn package building mechanism for textile machinery of the kind referred to comprises two stop members mounted on reciprocating members actuated by a suitable rotary part of the machine one at least of these stop members being automatically and progressively moved along the reciprocating members from zero to maximum and back during the running of the machine, whereby the two stop members engage and move arms on a direction controlling mechanism to reverse the direction of movement of the ring rail, or of the spindle rail at a predetermined position according to the setting of the mechanism.
The invention is more particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of the mechanism.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation partly in section looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the compound lever.
Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the compound swinging arms.
Fig. 5 is a plan of Fig. 1.
Figs. 6, 7 and 8 are detail detached views of parts of the larger figures, immediately adjacent.
The building mechanism shown in the drawings is mounted at one end of the machine, the end plate 6 of which is shown in section in Figs. 2 and 8 butis not shown in Fig. 1: by mounting the mechanism on the end plate of the machine it is in a convenient position for its working and is easily accessible.
The mechanism has two parallel rods J above and 8 below both slidably mounted in two brackets 9 and I0 (9 not being shown in Fig. 2) which are secured to the end plate 6 by nuts and bolts] I. The rods 1 and 8 are mounted to slide parallel with the end frame plate 6 and are secured at the ends by bridge pieces 12 secured by bolts l3.
The bottom rod 8 has a toothedrack .14 on its under face engaged by a pinion IS on a short shaft l6 at the other end of which is a sprocket wheel I! driven by a chain It from a sprocket, not shown in the drawings, on the liftershaft on the machine, which shaft, constantly. changing its direction of rotation, in a mannerdescribed later herein, reciprocates the two rods 1 and 8.
Mounted on the rods 1 and 8 is a member 19 having an upwardly extending arm 20 secured to it at the top and having between therods, a transverse extension 2| bored to form a bearing for a short shaft 22 having on its back end a ratchet Wheel 23 in front of which is acam plate 24 with a cam groove in its front face, While at the front end of the short shaft 22 is a toothed shock wheel 25, having above it a spring pressed pawl 26 which holds the wheel steady but can be over ridden when. the wheel is turned.
The upward extending arm 2!! which rises above the top edge of the cam plate 24 has mounted in it at the top two compound swinging arms 21 shown separately in Figs. 3 and 4.
These arms are not of the same length, nor are they aligned, the longer arm 28 has a ,slot 29 and the shorter arm 3ll angularly disposed to the arm 28 as shown in Fig. 4 has an opening 3| in which a short stud is mounted carrying a roller 32 running in the cam groove '33 of the cam plate 24, the cam groove 33 being a heart shaped cam giving a straight line motion.
Mounted in the slot 29 of the other arm is a slider having on it a roller 34, the slider being adjustable at any position in the slot andheld by the nut 35, and the roller is in a vertical slot 36 in a bridge member 31. On the bottom end of the slidable bridge member 31 is .an adjustably mounted stop 38 and opposite but not in line is a similar stop 39 on a bridge member 40 slidable on the rods 1 and B when it is desired to move it, but normally held in a fixed position by a grub screw 41.
On the brackets 9 and Hi and at the back near the plate 6 is a bar 42 having slots 43 near its ends so that it can be adjusted to and 'froas required and can be held by screwing down the screws 44 whose shanks pass through the slots 3 43. This bar 43 has on it a spring pressed pawl 45 which is in line with the ratchet wheel 23: the pawl 45 can be adjusted up and down by altering the nut 46 on its top end.
The two adjustable stops 38. and 39 project downwardly as shown and while they "area on the same level they are not opposite but are side by side. engage a separate lever 50 below when it--the' pawlis moving in one direction buti'n'ot to? operate it when moving in the other direction.
These levers serve, when operated, to reverse the direction of rotation of..the lifter.'shaft; and" the particular mechanism by which this is done is not part of the invention so long as the stop 38 when moving in one direction moves *over a' lever which reverses the direction ofrotation;
Each of these stops is designed to.
the teeth, the check pawl 26 holding the wheel 25 and through it the ratchet wheel 23. It will be appreciated that by moving the spring pawl 45 toward or from the ratchet wheel 25 the number of teeth the ratchet wheel can be notched-on 'b'ya-the pawlcanabe: varied; within the adjustable limits.
When the machine is working, and considering Figs. 1 and 5, the rods 1 and 8 and all they and the stop 39 when moving in theopposite direction engages its lever and reverses the direction. of rotation the two stops thus constantly reversingQ'the direction of. rotation; that" is all that is required of L them. It is convenientfor the levers engagedf to actuate. electrical apparatusorother' means to give the necessary rapid reversal.
' When the machineis to'be used, the size'and shape of l the packages to be wound" are. known andthemechan'ism'is set accordingly; theposi tion of the stop 39' fixing the bottom of the package-tl-ie stop which is movable; fixing'the top of the package.
7 The invention-can'be used with a machine having either a rising; and" falling'ringmailthe spindle level being fixed; or with" rising 'and'iallling. spindles, the level: of thering rail being fikedIFor the purpose of this description, it willlhdwever bev assumed thatthe ring? rail rises andi'falls and thaspindles'do not. On this as sumption thebridg'e 40 and; the stop 39icarried by. it"ar'e adjusted to the bottom of the package at which. level the stop 38' reversesfthe' direction oflrotation of the liftershaft sothat the ring raill'risestill the stop 38' engages" its lever and again reversesthedirectionof rotation.
Wfiena flat based package is to be'b'uilt the reversal of" direction of rotation at the'bcttom will always be at the same level so thestop 39 can be adjusted to the bottom" position and fixedl Thev top of the package will; however becontinually rising on the spindle-until the maximum top position is reached, and consequently'the other stop? 38 must'be movable so thatit efiects a reversal of the .d'ir'ectioncfrotation. at" difierent levels.-
'I helrequired variation of thelevel of: reversal effected by the stop 38"i's' efiected by first slackening the nut 3563 which the'r'oller 34 is'heldin its adjusted positionin the slo't 2'9 'of'the long arm of 'the compound'lever 21'. bridge member 31' to be slidto' and fro" on the rods land 8" to the desired position, and'the releasing-ofithe roller which can th'uslmove'up and down the slot 29 and alsothevertical slot 36 in the bridge member 2 1. When the. desired ad'- ju'st'ment' of the position of the bridge member 37 has been made the nut 35 is secured" to fix the position of-the roller in the slot 29 and" also, though. it can slide up' and down therein in the slot 36'.
The position of the spring.pawl45 isadjusted as this pawl, which is" in" linewith' the ratchet wheel 23 will. engageteeth of the'wheel as it is moved to and'fro by the reciprocation of the ro'dsl and 8': in onedirection the pawl turns the wheel and-in the other itdoesnot, but overrides This; allows the 7 'carryare atone 'endfof their travel, and they have moved to the left hand side. One of the stops 38 01339 comesinto operation at this point and the direction -offthefwheel" I! is reversed from the reversalof'directiorr-or rotation of the lifter shaft and the rods land 8 move to the right and in dueicourse the ratchet wheel 23 is engaged by the spring pawl 45 and is notched-on one or more teeth. and; turned. This turning also turns the cam plate 24 which moves the short arm 30 of the compound .swingingarms 21, whose rolleriis in? the cam'groove', and" it also moves the long arm'28 carryinggtheroller 34 slidab'lein'the verti caILsIot 36 in" the b'ridge member 3T, andiconsequently th'e'bri'dgefmember' 3Tandits stop" 38"are movedto' and from the-stop 3'9. V
The distance: between the stops 38 and" 39" is thus 'widened' upito. a maximum'and then nar rowed to a. minimum and this .movement' continues as longas .the machine is running. The position at which the-stop 38 engages .andoperates the armfiiL whichin-some cases .may. be. a switch :ar n, thus =varies:-at. each reciprocation .of the .rodsand this in. turnvariesthe top position of the --ring. rail or-. of the spindle: rod, where: the reversal of. the movement-is effected.
