Anotherpurpose of this invention is to? lift the generator and fan of certain types of engines, .therebytightening the attendant belts by means of a standard which has curved feet at the end thereof connected with the remainder of the standard by means of offsets so that the tightening may take place at a point spaced from the vertical plane of the two water pump pulleys, thereby avoiding interference with the actual belt being, tightened when this operation is taking place.
Ancillary objects and features of novelty will become apparent to those skilled in the art, in following the description of the preferred form of the invention, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure '1 is the front view of an engine of a typical type having the invention applied thereto and in partial operation;
Figure 2 is a front view of the standard or support;
Figure 3 is an elevational side view of the device shown in Figure 2, showing schematically and in phantom a. portion of an engine to illustrate the arrangement of the tool with respect to said engine;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary elevational view showing the arrangement of the generator pulley clamp on the said generator pulley;

A "first belt; 1 38* of conventional; description isentrained; aroundr gthe-two water;-

It is sometimes necessary to tighten either the belt 38 or the belt 40 or both belts. Accordingly, a tool is provided for this purpose. The tool consists of a support or standard 42 having smoothly curved feet 44 and 46 respectively at the bottom thereof. The support 42 is made of a pair of legs 48 and. 50 respectively which are firmly attached to a small case or housing 52 at one end and which have offsets 54 and 56 respectively at the opposite end. These oil'- sets terminate in downwardly extending feet 46 and 44 respectively adapted to embrace something less than half of the peripheral surface of the water pump pulleys 34 and 36, respectively, and on the inside of the belt 38. The offset makes it possible to insert the tool and more specifically the standard or support 42 and leave working room so that the generator and generator pulley may be lifted.
The housing 52 has a shank 60 mounted for rotation therein and there are threads 62 thereon. A handle 64 may be disposed at the top end of the shank for facility in rotation. A threaded collar =56 is disposed within the housing 52 and it has a hook or projecting member 68 fixed thereto for vertical movement therewith. A slot 12 is formed in the side of the housing 52 with the projecting member 68 passed therethrough.
Accordingly, upon rotation of the shank 50, the collar 65 is lifted or lowered by means of the threaded connection between the two and the hook or projecting member 68 is raised or lowered, depending on which direction the shank is rotated.
A flexible member, such as a chain 16, is attached to the projecting member or hook 68 by If itis desired the belt 40 or independently adjust the belt 40 l a rod bent to form an eye 82 at the top thereof and having offset portions 84 at theopposite ends thereof. A smoothly curved cradle member 86 is carried by the ofisets or offset portions 84. 'It is this cradle member which is adapted to be dis-' posed beneath the said pulley 30.
It is quite apparent that upon raising and lowering the hook 68, the belt 38 may be manipulated fortightening. v r
to either simultaneously adjust with' res'pect' to the belt 38, this may be accom both. It requires only a single manipulation of one handle 6| in order to raise the desired pulleys, thereby tightening the belts as necessary. Often the generator belt is pulled too tight, causing premature" wear on the belt. To avoid this, it is only necessary to manipulate the adjustable elements SI and '92 which are carried at the ends of the cradle" member 86 and which a 'screw or cap screws. -When the clamp 80 is in position below the generator pulley 30, the elements SI and 92 4 will spread the belt slightly so that after fastening the generator in place on the engine, a proper amount of slack will remain in the belt 38.
It, is apparent that variations may be made without departing from the spiritjof the invention.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
For use with an engine which has a plurality of pulleys, a tool for tightening a belt entrained about the pulleys comprising a standard and a clamp; means carried by said standard and attached to said clamp for raising and lowering said clamp, the clamp including a curved cradle member adapted to detachably engage the lower surface of one of the pulleys, means carried bysaid standard for supporting said'standard on portions of the periphery of at least two other pulleys, and adjustable members carried by said curved cradle member to engage said belt; whereby when said cradle member is lifted said adjustable members engage said belt and hold it'spaced slightly from the pulley which is contacted by said curved cradle member. 7 I V I 7 JD GILBREATH.
