This invention relates to clothes hangers and more particularly to attachments applicable to an existing wire clothes hanger to provide pads or guards for the shoulder portions of a garment supported on the hanger to maintain garments against creasing or being pulled out of shape while supported on the hanger.

It is among the objects of the invention to provide improved clothes hanger attachments mountable on an ordinary wire hanger to constitute guards or pads for supporting the shoulder portions of garments mounted on the hanger in a smooth and uncreased condition, which attachments are easily mountable on and separable from an ordinary wire hanger, which are of simple and durable one piece construction and are economical to manufacture from suitable moldable material, and which are neat and attractive in appearance and effective in use.

Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the appended claim in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:

With continued reference to the drawing, the coat hanger of the present invention comprises, in general, an ordinary wire frame hanger I0 and two attachments, one of which is designated at II. As the two attachments are identical in construction, it has been considered sufiicient for the purposes of the present disclosure to illustrate one only of the attachments, the complementary attachment having been omitted for the purpose of simplifying the illustration.

The wire hanger I I) has a substantially straight bar I2 and two shoulder bars I3 and I4 joined at their outer ends to the respectively opposite ends of the straight bar I2 and interconnected at their inner ends by a twist or wrap I5, one of the shoulder bars being extended past the wrap I5 and curved to provide a hook formation I6. The two shoulder bars I3 and I4 extend along the straight bar I2 from the ends to substantially the mid-length location of the latterv and are spaced from and inclined away from the straight bar from the ends of the straight bar toward the mid-length location.

As wire frame hangers of the character indicated are well known to the art, a more detailed description is considered unnecessary for the purposes of the present disclosure.

The attachment II comprises a flat plate portion I! which is tapered in width substantially from one end to the other and is transversely curved to provide an upper convex and an under concave surface. The side edges of this plate are longitudinally curved and the ends of the plate are also curved and joined to the side edges to provide a continuous curve entirely around the plate.

Two oppositely disposed hook formations I8 and I9 are provided on the concave under surface of the plate near the smaller end of the tapered plate and receive one of the shoulder bars. for example, the shoulder bar I3, of the wire hanger therein. These hook formations I8 and I9 are spaced apart longitudinally of the plate and are offset relative to the longitudinal center line of the plate so that the shoulder bar of the hanger engaged therein will be biased to a position at which it is inclined relative to-the longitudinal center line of the plate.

A single hook formation 20 wider than either of the hook formations I8 and I 9 is: provided on the concave under surface of the plate near the wider end of the latter and is joined to the plate at a location adjacent the longitudinal center line of the plate when the hanger shoulder bar is engaged therein.

A pair of spaced apart and substantially parallel tongues 2| and 22 project from the hook 20 at the side of the hook remote from the plate I! and are positioned substantially radially of the transverse curvature of the plate. These tongues have a length such that when the hook 20 engages a shoulder bar of the hanger l0 near the outer end of such a shoulder bar, the distal ends of the tongues 2I and 22 will engage the straight bar I2 of the hanger near the corresponding end of the latter and hold the attachment against turning on the shoulder bar of the hanger. The hook 20 engages the curved portion 23 of the shoulder bar at the corresponding end of the straight bar 12 and holds the attachment against sliding outwardly along the shoulder bar while the tongues 2| and 22 support the attachment against turning on the shoulder bar. The edge of each of the tongues 2| and 22 provides a continuous curve and the tongues taper in width in a direction away from the associated hook 20, as is clearly illustrated in Figure 1.

The invention may be embodied in other spe- V -cific forms without departing from the spirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment-is,therefore, to be considered in all respects .as illustrative and not restrictive, the

' scope of the invention being indicated by the appended Fclaim rather than by the foregoing description, and all changes which come within the :meaning and range or equivalency of the claim are, therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
