Patented June 6, 1882..

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALBERT UEBELE, OF GMUND, WI IRTEMBERG, GERMANY.
' ATTACH M ENT FOR WATCH-CHAINS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,247, dated June 6, 1882.
Application filed J une 3, 1881. (ModeL) Patented in Germany February 12, 1881, No. 15,335; in France May 14, 1881, No. 142,853,
. and in Belgium May 21, 1881, No. 54,695.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT UEBELE, of Gmiind,Wiirtemberg,Germany, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Stamp- Medallions, of which the followingis aspecification.
This invention relates to an im proved attachment for watch-chains; and it has for its object to provide a charm in the form of a locket, the halves of which are detachably screwed together by a peculiar hinge or connection, one half containing a stamp of any desired design and the other an ink-pad, the parts being so arranged that when closed the face of the stamp will come in contact with the ink-pad and become suitably charged with ink, and when opened to acertaiu extent may be separated,'so as to permit the part carrying the stamp to be readily manipulated to transfer the design of the stamp to any suitable material. These ob jects I attain by the devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a front view of the device with the parts closed. Fig. 2 represents a side view of the device with the parts opened, and in position to be separated and Fig. 3 represents the parts separated, showing the interior of each and the stamp and ink-pad.
The letter a indicates one part, and b the other part, of the charm or locket, which is constructed of any suitable material and may be made after any desired design.
The letter 0. indicates an ink-pad, composed of any suitable ink-holding material, which is screwed in the part a of the locket. The said part a is provided with a ring, a, by means of which the device may be attached to a Watchchain.
The two parts a and b are detach ably screwed together at one edge, as indicated by the letter 0. In the present instance the detachable connection consists of a pintle, c, at the edge of one of the parts of the locket, and a barrel, d, at the edge of the other part, the two constituting a hinge similar to an ordinary doorhinge.
0n the barrel d and the corresponding part, c, of the portion a of the locket are formed segmental ribs g,as indicated. These ribs extend from the edges of the parts a. and I), respectively, on the outside of the barrel (7, and the portion 0 to about half-way round the same.
The edges of the respective halves of the locket are provided with grooves h, which engage the ribs, except when the halves are at 'right angles with each other, when they clear the said ribs and permit the barrel d to be removed from the pintle c, permitting the halvesto be separated in order that the halt b may be employed as a hand-stamp.
The locket is provided with an ordinary cntch,f, by means of which the parts may be held together, as usual.
It is evident, as constructed, that the parts cannot become accidentally detached,si nce, if they should be accidentally opened, the parts would, by the gravity of the part I), pass the line at right angles of the two parts, in which position the ribs would still hold the parts together.
What I claim is- 1. An attachment for a watch-chain, consisting of a charm or locketbaving the two parts detachably connected together, one being provided with a suitable stamp and another with an ink-pad, substantially as specifled.
. 2. In combination with the halves of a locket, the pintle at one edge of one ot'said halves, and the barrel at the corresponding edge of the other half adapted to set upon said pintle, and the segmental ribs adapted to engage suitable grooves in the respective halves to hold the parts together and permit them to be separated when desired, substantially as specified,
ALB. UEBELE.
