BRANDlNG-TOOL.

To all lwhom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J. P. VORRALL, of' the city ot' Philadelphia and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented a new and useful Im- A provement in Branding-Tools; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a vertical longitudinal section of myinvention, taken on a line through the center of the same; and Fig. 2 is a vertical crosssection through the central portion; Figs. 3 and 4, a plan and section ot' a circular frame or case made yupon my plan.

The nature ot' myinventon consists in such a construction of the frame and movable types as will allow the said types to be readily removed or rigidly held in place, as desired.

That. others may understand my improvement, I will more particularly describe it.

A is a metallic case, open at both top and bottoni, but closed at the ends, and bridged across its central part bythe bridge B, through which the screw-handle D passes. Along the inner lower edge of A are the flanges a.

C C are the movable types and blanks composing the inscription to be branded. They are each provided with shoulders corresponding to the shoulders a, as shown in Figs. l and 2, so that the types and blanks cannot pass through the frame, but can only be inserted or removed through the top.

Vhe-n the proper types and blanks are placed within the frame A in their proper order the follower E is introduced and laid over'them and the handle D turned until the follower is pressed firmly upon the upper ends of the types, in which condition the tool may be heated and the branding done in the ordinary way.

By this method ot' construction any desirable inscription may be put up in a very short time, or it may be changed as often as desired with a small amount of trouble.

I am aware that branding-tools have been made having movable types, and such I do not claim; but

What I do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. Constructing the case A of a single piece so arrau ged that the follower and type can be inserted or removed by simply loosening the handle, as herein shown and described.

2. In combination with the frame made as above described, the square-shouldered type, when arranged to operatein combination therewith, as and for the purpose set forth.
