y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. COX, OF MOORES SALT WORKS, OHIO.
SAFETY-STIRRU P.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 259,101, dated June 6, 1882.
d Application filed April 19, 1882. (No model.) y
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMEs- L. COX, of Moores Salt Works, in the county of Jefferson and 1 State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Stirrups; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a perspective view of my im proved-safety-stirrup. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, andv Fig. 3 is a detail view.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to that classof safetystirrups which consist essentially of a bracket having a hinged spriug-rod,.the point of lwhich enters an opening in the foot-rest, from which it will be disengaged by the foot of the rider should he be thrown; and itconsists'in the improved construction of the same which will be hereinafterffully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Inthedrawings hereto anneXed,Arepresents the body of my improved stirrup, which consists of a single side piece, B, and the foot-piece or bracket C, forming the foot-rest, and provided at its inner free end with a short npward-projecting bracket, D. The side B and foot-rest C are provided with a continuous strengthening-ange, E, so that the foot-rest, although supported at one end only, shall be possessed of sufficient strength to support any weight which may be putupon it without breaking. The side piece, B, has at its upper end an eye or slot, F,for the attachment ot' the stirrup-strap Gr. 1t is also provided with a transverse perforation, H, in which is hinged a rod or wire, I, made of springfsteel, and having at its lower end an S-Shaped loop, J, beyond which the point of said spring-rod projects a short distance, as at K. The bracket D of the spring-rod I is replaced the loop J will retain it in its proper position or prevent it from passing entirely through perforation M, thus giving the rod I an outwardly-curved position to properly accommodate the foot.
This device is simple, inexpensive, and affords an absolute safeguard in the manner described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The stirrup A, consisting of side piece, B,"
having eye F and perforation H, and foot-rest C, having anged bracket D, provided with a perforation, M, in combination with the hinged spring-rod I, provided with au S-shaped loop, J, near its lower end, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES L. COX.
