PUNCHPLUG RECEPTACLE FOR-BAND PUNCHES Filed May 13,
- INVENTOR.. Qov A. LORENZEN Patented Apr. 1, 1952 UNITED '5 PUNCH PLUG RECEPTACLE FOR HAND PUNCHES Boy A; Lorenzen, Chicago, Ill. Application May1 3, 1949, Serial No. 93,139
K This invention relates to hand punches, and more particularly to a punch plug or punching receptacle attachable to a hand punch to temporarily contain the plugs punched out of the work pieces by the punch.
It'is among the objects of the invention to provide an improved punch plug receptacle assembly for a hand punch which assembly can be easily applied to the punch with no material modification of the punch and which includes a cup of transparent material and a bushing nut which simultaneously secures the punch tube to the punch jaw and provides a retaining seat for the cup, which receptacle assembly will retain the punch plugs or punchings, so that they will not be spilled upon the floor or upon the bedwhen, as is frequently the case, a hand punch is used by a person confined to bed, which is easily dis-assembled for emptying the cup, when necessary, as determined by inspection of the transparent cup, and which is simple and durable in construction, economical to manufacture, and neat and attractive in appearance.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent from a consideration of the following description and the appended claims in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a conventional hand punch for punching leather and similar material, showing a punch plug receptacle assembly operatively positioned on the punch;
Figure 2 is a longitudinal, medial cross-section on an enlarged scale of the punch plug receptacle assembly and punch tube, and is taken substantially on the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a transverse cross-section on the line 3-3 of Figure 1; and
Figure'4 is a bottom plan view on an enlarged "2 Claims'l' (Cl. 164121) 2 anvil l8 to the open position of the punch. The side members I I and 12 may be formed of suitable sheet metal stock stamped or otherwise formed to a generally U-shaped cross-section and to the desired shape of the handle and jaw portions.
As the hand punch, itself, is of conventional construction, and constitutes no part of the present invention, except in the combination thereof with the novel punch plug'receptacle assemscale of the punch tube and punch tube supporting jaw of the punch illustrated in Figure 1.
With continued reference to the drawing, the hand punch comprises two crossed-over side members H and I2 pivotally interconnected intermediate their ends by a pivot pin 13. The side members II and I2 comprise respective handles and [5 at one side of the pivot pin l3, and respective jaws l6 and H at the side of the pivot pin opposite the handles. The jaw l6 carries on its inner side and adjacent its outer end a suitable anvil IB, and the jaw 11 carries a punch tube IS, the cutting end of which is opposed to the anvil [8. A torsion spring 20 surrounds the pivot pin I3 and bears at its ends against the handles 14 and [5 to resiliently separate the handies and move the punch tube l9 away from the bly, a further description of the punch is considered unnecessary for the purposes of the pres.- ent disclosure.
The punch tube 19 is a hollow, tapered body sharpened at its smaller end to provide a cutting or punching edge and provided near its larger end with an outwardly-extending, annular flange 2 I. At the side of the flange opposite the smaller end of the punch tube, this tube is provided with an externally screw-threaded, cylindrical boss 22, and the punch jaw I1 is provided near its outer end with an aperture 23 through which the boss 22 extends with the flange 2| providing an annular shoulder bearing against the inner side of the jaw around the aperture 23.
conventionally the punch tube I9 is secured to the jaw I! by an ordinary nut threaded onto the screw-threaded boss 22 of the tube and clamping the jaw ll between itself and the shoulder flange 2! of the tube.
In the application of the present invention, the ordinary nut conventionally securing the punch tube to the punch jaw is discarded and a special nut 25 is substituted therefor. The nut 25 includes an internally screw-threaded, non-circular portion 26 threadedly receiving the screwthreaded boss of the tube [9, and a cylindrical extension or bushing 21 extending from one side of the portion 26 concentrically with the screwthreaded, boss-receiving opening in such portion. If desired, an internal annular shoulder 28 may be provided in the nutat the inner end of the screw threads in the portion 28to abut the end of the boss 22 of the punch tube.
An elongated, cylindrical receptacle 30, formed of a suitable transparent material, such as a synthetic resin plastic, has one end closed by a substantially hemispherical end wall 3|, and has its opposite end open and terminating in a plane substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal center-line of the receptacle. The receptacle 30 is telescopically engageable at its open end with the cylindrical bushing 21 of the nut 25 to releasably secure the receptacle to the nut. In the arrangement illustrated, the receptacle 30 receives the bushing 21, and the receptacle is provided, around its open end, with an annular reinforcing bead 32.
The receptacle 30 is dimensioned to have a capacity sufiicient to hold the punch plugs or punchings produced during a reasonable period of operation of the punch. The quantity of punchings in the receptacle can be easily determined by inspection, because of the transparent nature of the receptacle walls, and, as soon as the receptacle has been filled with punchings, it can be slipped off of the bushing 21 and emptied without spilling any of the punch plugs or punchings on the floor or on the bed of a person using the punch. As soon as the receptacle 30 has been emptied, it may be quickly and easily replaced and use of the punch resumed.
The invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the xspirit or essential characteristics thereof. The present embodiment is, therefore, to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being indicated by the appended claims rather than by the foregoin'g description, and all changes which come within the meaning and range of equivalency of the claims, are therefore, intended to be embraced therein.
