Specication of Letters Patent No. 2,589, dated April 29, 1842.
working part of the cock, or that part which- 1s subjected to friction and wear, is made' of brass, or of some metallic compound analogous thereto, and adapted to the purpose, while the great body of the cock consists of cast iron, which, from its cheapness,`
admits of the manufacturing of cocks, and particularly those of a large size, at a price considerably below that at which they can be rendered when made in the usual. way. In manufacturing them I proceed in the following manner. I cast the body and the key, or plug, of the cock in the usual man- ---....,uer,.,but of cast iron, instead of casting it into the socket so rimmed out. I also turn that part of the key, or plug, which is to fit into the socket and adapt thereto a ferrule, which when soldered in place can be ground into the socket and secured in the ordinary manner. Said ferrules must, of course, be perforated so as to correspond with the way, or passage, through the body of the cock.
In the accompanying drawing, which represents a section through the middle of the cock, A, is the key, or plug, of the cock, the handle part and interior being of cast iron, and the plug being covered with a ferrule of brass, as shown at a, a.
B, is the body of the cock, the socket of which is lined with a similar ferrule, as shown at Z), Z).
hat I claim as a new manufacture in the above described cock,` is- The making it in part of cast iron and in part of brass, in the manner set forth z; that is to say, by casting the boc y, and also the key, or plug, of iron, and then lining the socket, and covering the conical part of the key with ferrules of brass, or of some analogous met-al, as herein fully set forth and made known.
