The present invention relates to a tobacco pipe. More particularly, it comprises a smoking pipe of substantially conventional form as viewed exteriorly, but having a novel interior bowl structure wholly different from conventional pipe bowl structures.

An object of the invention is to provide a pipe, the bowl of which may be easily cleaned.

A further object of the invention is to provide a pipe which may be cheaply manufactured in large quantities, the bowl being capable of being quickly taken apart and cleaned.

Another object is to provide, in such a pipe, an upper and lower bowl and a well located in the lower bowl and a well located below thefilter, said well being shaped to contain filtering material, and further, being so located with regard to the pipe stem that it retains saliva, and the tarry by-products of the smoke.

A further object of the invention is to construct a pipe having a plurality of air flues in the bowl.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a bowl for a pipe provided with means for distributing and cooling the smoke, the smoke being distributed so that it enters a filtering medium in the bottom of the bowl at a plurality of different places.

An additional object is to provide a bafiie button on the interior of the bowl which may be integral with the bowl or which may be in the form of an attachment whereby to evenly distribute the smoke over the filter.

Finally, it is an object of the invention to provide a pipe comprising upper and lower sections, an extension detachably connected to the upper section and provided with a plurality of passageways through which smoke from the upper section passes to the lower section, said extension having a base portion flush, when attached, with the under surface of the upper bowl bottom and being supported entirely by the upper section, said lower section having a flange protruding upwardly in a circular recess in said upper section but being laterally spaced from said base portion whereby the passageways communicate with a well in said lower section.

Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of the bowl, the stem being shown in dotted lines.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 33 of Figure 1.

Referring to Figure 1 of the drawings the pipe bowl is generally indicated by the letters A and B, the section A having a bowl I and a bowl bottom 2. The bottom is in the form of a web or partition provided with an aperture 3, and its under surface 4 is substantially flat and is horizontally arranged to form a circular recess 5. The underside of the web is provided with passageways 6, or any other suitable number of horizontal passages, each of which is in communication with the aperture 3.

The lower bowl section B is provided with a well 9, a stem l0 and a stem passageway H.

The section A is provided with a plurality of flues 12, the lower end of the fiues communicate with outlets [3.

In Figure 2 the bowl sections C and D are similar in internal and external structure to the sections A and B except that the baflle structure is in the form of a removable button. The bowl [4 has a bowl bottom I 5, an aperture I6, end surfaces I! and a circular recess I8. There are a plurality of air flues I 9 having outlets 20 similar to the structure shown in Figure 1.

The numeral 2| indicates a button or extension having a plurality of passageways 22 horizontally arranged, which communicate with a vertical passageway 23 which is in line with the aperture I6 when the button or plug has been secured into place as shown in Figure 2. For this purpose the button is provided with a flange portion 33 having a plurality of screw threads shown at 24 which are held by the internal screw threads 25 located above the circular recess l8, this constituting the sole means for supporting extension 2|.

The section D is provided with a well 26, a stem 21 and a stem passageway 28.

The well 9 of Figure 1 and well 26 of Figure 2 are for the reception of a filter. This filter material may be of any suitable kind, not shown, such as loose tobacco, cotton, etc.

It is to be noted that the lower bowl sections B and D are each provided with circular flanges 30 and 3l, flange 3i] fitting in recess 5 and flange 3| fitting in recess l8 in such a manner that the flanges are laterally spaced from passageways 6 and 22 respectively. Also part of extension 2|, namely base portion 32, is flush with the under surface of bottom I5, when attached, to prevent leakage and provide a tight fit.

The essential features of the structures illustrated in the three figures comprises the vertically arranged air fiues which continuously cool the pipe as it is smoked. In Figure 3 only four of these are shown, but as many may be provided as is necessary to keep the pipe bowl cool.

An additional essential feature of this invention comprises the baflie construction whereby as the smoke is drawn downwardly through the passageway 3 in Figure 1, or the passageway IS in Figure 2 it is bafiled by the baflle passageways 6, Figure -1,and 22 of Figure 2.

This application is a continuation-in-part of my application Serial No. 546,128, filed July 22, 1944.

It will be understood that changes may be made to the structures shown, provided they come within the scope of the appended claim.

I claim:

A smoking pipe comprising a. pair of bowls, means for securing said bowls together one above the other, the upper bowl forming a tobacco burning chamber and having a bottom formed with an opening therein, a removable extension, said extensionhaving a base portion and a flange portion, said bottom of said upper bowl having a circular recess in its undersurface with which s'ai'd'opening communicates, means to detachably passageways provided with four exits communicating with said first named passageway and said circular recess, all of said passageways being above the lower limit of said upper bowl and within the confines of the boundary of said upper bowl, a well for supporting filtering material in said lower bowl, said lower bowl having a circular flange protruding upwardly into said circular recess but laterally spaced from said base portion whereby said passageways communicate with said well.
