Description
E. KRETZNER TOBACCO PIPE May 1, 1934.
Filed June 8, 1933 7/? ran for Patented May 1, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT; OFFICE Application June 8, 1933, Serial No. 674,831 In Germany June 20, 1932 3 Claims.
The invention relates to an improved tobacco pipe.
Tobacco pipes are known with a divided insert serving for the reception of the tobacco, which pipes consist of an upper part which can be screwed into the pipe bowl and a porous lower part.
According to the present invention the bottom insert piece is recessed in step form and almost fills the bottom of the shell of the pipe bowl, leaving a narrow annular channel for receiving the smoke while the skirt of the top insert piece projects into the recessed portion of the bottom insert piece, the top insert piece being screwed into .the shell of the pipe bowl. A joint is formed between the bottom of the skirt of the top insert piece and the ledge at the base of the recessed portion of the bottom insert piece, and this joint is accordingly protected from the action of heat, while comparatively small axial displacements of the two parts are permitted. Compensation for any inaccuracies or" manufacture is also made possible.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a longitudinal section of the pipe; Figure 2 is a vertical section through the bottom insert piece; Figure 3 is a plan of the bottom insert piece.
a is the shell of the pipe bowl, I) the top insert piece which forms the upper part of the bowl proper, and is screwed into the shell a; c is the bottom insert piece forming the lower part of the bowl and which acts as a filter. d is the mouthpiece of the pipe. The bottom insert piece 0 is recessed in step form, and the skirt of the top insert piece b projects into the recessed portion. A joint is formed between the bottom of the skirt and the ledge at the base of the bottom insert piece, and packing rings 9 are preferably inserted in the joint.
The bottom insert piece 0 has a central hole 2 which opens into a recess e from which radial channels 1 lead to an annular channel h which is left between the bore of the shell a and the outer wall of the insert pieces b and 0 whose external diameter is smaller than the bore of the shell.
What I claim is:-
1. In a bowl assembly for a tobacco pipe, a bowl shell, a porous bottom insert piece recessed in its upper portion, of smaller diameter than the bore of the shell, whereby an annular passage is left between the bowl shell and the bottom insert piece, and a top insert piece screwed into the shell and having a skirt which projects into the recessed upper portion of the bottom insert piece.
2. In a bowl assembly for a tobacco pipe, a bowl shell, a porous bottom insert piece recessed in its upper portion, of smaller diameter than the bore of the shell, whereby an annular passage is left between the bowl shell and the bottom insert piece, a top insert piece screwed into the shell and having a skirt which projects into the recessed upper portion of the'bottom insert piece which terminates in a ledge, and a packing interposed between the base of the skirt and the ledge at the base of the recessed portion of the bottom insert piece.
3. In a bowl assembly for a tobacco pipe, a bowl shell, a porous bottom insert piece recessed in its upper portion, of smaller diameter than the bore of the shell, whereby an annular passage is left between the bowl shell and the bottom insert piece, said bottom insert piece being also recessed in its lower portion so as to form in conjunction with the lower part of the bowl shell a chamber, and having radial passages connecting said chamber with said annular passage, and having an axial passage connecting said chamber with the upper surface of said bottom insert piece, and a top insert piece screwed into the shell and having a skirt which projects into the recessed. upper portion of the bottom insert piece.
ERVVIN KRETZNER.
