Description

(No MbdeL) g HOLLAND.
FIRE PLACE.
No. 25 8,9ZZ-
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES HOLLAND, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
FIRE-PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming art of Letters PatentNo. 258,922, dated June 6, 1882. Application filed September 27, 1ss0. (No model.)
To all whom may concern:
Be it known that'I, CHARLES HOLLAND, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook, in
, the State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Open Grates and Open Fire-Places for Heating Apartments; and I do hereby declare the followingto be a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description thereof to enable others skilled in the art to make and usethe said invention.
My invention relates to that class of fireplacesin which hollow metallic or earthenware t'orms, simulatingwoodorcoal,as usually placed in open fire places or grates, are caused to appear as burning by means of jets of combustible gas or vapor issuing therefrom.
The nature of my invention consists in making such hollow perforated forms with a chamber or recess, either back of or beneath them,-
or both back and beneath, and placing in such recess or space a retort which generates gas or hydrocarbon vapors and passes them by suitable tnbular connections into the hollow form, from which they burn with a heating and illuminating effect as they issue from the apertures. I will now proceed to particularly describe the mode of making and using the said invention, referring in so doing to the drawings annexed and forming a part of this specification and the letters of reference marked thereon.
Fignre l is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation made in the planeindicated by theline a". 00 in Fig. 1. Figs. 3, 5, and 7, and
Figs. 4, 6, and S are respectively front and sectional elevations of modified forms of this invention.
A represents a chamber or recess inclosed wholly or in part by the form B, consisting of hollow metallicearthenware or steatite orother refractory mineral shaped to resemble coal, wood, or peat in theusual shapes employedin open fire-places, and having numerous small perforations, (marked 11.) This form B is preferably supported by a grateor hand irons, such as are used in ordinary fire-places. In the lower part of thespace A, I place a retort, 0,
preferably of one of the forms shown in my issues in jets from the small apertures 12. A
small pan, K, placed under the retort O and jet-tube G, receives a small supply of oil from a tube, (1.
The operation of this invention is as follows: Oil in the pan Kfrom the tube d, being ignited, heats the retort O and volatilizes the oil admitted thereto by the pipe D, and the resulting.
gas and vapor burn under the retort O and issue from the apertures bin the form B, produce luminous flame, the form B becomes heated, as do also the walls of the chamber A, and a radiation of heat from the form B, as welljas the pleasing efl'ect of the luminous flame issuing from the form, is maintained without dust or ashes and with a very small consumption of oil.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination'of aform, B, a retort, O,
located behind, beneath, or within, and receivin g heat radiated from said form and connected with a liquid-hydrocarbon-supplying tube, D, a heating-pipe, F G, and a pipe, J, substantially as and for the'purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the retort 0, located in a chamber, A, within a form, B, simulating burning fuel, with the pipes J and F, as and for the purpose set forth.
' CHARLES HOLLAND.
