GAS OR OIL HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 615,193, dated November 29, 1898.

To all whom, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSHUA J. NIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Royersford, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas or Oil Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to gas or oil heaters; and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same by whicha room or other place may be eiectually and thoroughly heated in an economical manner.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a front view of a heater constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional View of the same. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 0c, Fig. 1.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the base of the heater, consisting of the hollow sides 2, the hollow back 3, and a number of forwardly-projecting chambers 2, similar to sides 2, forming a waterbacl; for containing water. The said back is curved, as shown, and is enameled or coppered on itssurface, so as to form a reflector'. The upper end of. said back is extended forwardly and curved downwardly, forming a water-chamber 4, which is a part of the Waterchambers formed by the hollow sides, back, and intermediate chambers 2. In rear of said base is a steam-chamber 5, formed by the vcrtical walls 6, and the upper end is turned outwardly at a right angle, formingahollow mantel or shelf 7.
The numeral S designates a series of pipes connecting the upper end of the water-back with the steam-chamber.
Located in front of the upper end of the water-back is a vapor pan or trough 9, for containing water. A passage 10 is thus formed between the said pan or trough and the front of the water-chamber 4. for the escape of the heat and products of combustion from the burners. This pan at each end is connected with the water-back by means of nipples 12.
The numeral 13 designates a series of Welsbach burners, connected with a gas-supply pipe 14. by means of branch pipes 15, provided with stop-cocks 16. By employing such burners as the heating means the room will also be lighted; but where gas is not available these burners may be removed and any suitable liquid-hydrocarbon burners may be substituted therefor.
The nipples which connect the vapor-pan and water-back are located below the waterline, and the water is supplied to the waterback from the pan through such nipples, and the pan being open the height of the water can always be readily ascertained, so that it can be replenished when too low.
In using the device the water-back is lled with Water to the proper level, as seen in Fig. 2, and the burners are lighted, heating the water contained in the water-back and converting it into steam, which will enter the steam-chamber and heat the extension and mantel. The heat will also be reliected from the curved water-back into the room and the products of combustion will escape through the passage between the vapor-pan and water-back up in front of the extension and will be deflected into the room. In front of the said Water-back is a glass plate 17, the front vof which is provided with convex portions 18 and the rear or inner sides made plain or flat, thus forming what is known as an ordinary bulls-eye. An apron of asbestos may be placed in front of this bulls-eye if it is desired to prevent the light from shining through.
By my invention I provide a hot-air and steam heater which vwill heat a room thoroughly and uniformly, and the vapor from the Vapor-pan will impart the requisite humidity to the atmosphere of the room.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is In a heater of the character described, the combination with the water-back comprising the hollow sides and back, theforwardly-extending intermediate portionsforming a series of separated chambers and the forwardlyextending upper end curved at the lower side and the heaters located in said intermediate chambers, of the vertical walls forming a steam-chamber and the hollow mantel at the upper end, the pipes connecting said water- IOO back and steam-chamber, the vapor-pan 10- my hand in presence of two subscribing witcated in front of the forwardly-extending upnesses.
