W. FORBES.
STOVE.
APPLICATION FILED ma. 1. 1911.

Application filed February 1, 1917.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM FORBES, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Tatamagouche, in the Province of Nova Scotia and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stoves, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved stove and the principal object of the invention is to provide a stove which can be used for heating a house thus making use of heat which is ordinarily wasted.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the stove that the amount of cold air passing into the heat chamber may be controlled.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this stove that a hot water heating system may be installed therein.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the stove that the air control means may be removed when so desired, thus providing additional room upon the top of the stove.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a view showing the improved stove in front elevation.
Fig. 2 is a view of the improved stove in side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic view showing the hot water system connected with the stove.
This stove 10 is of the kitchen range type and is provided with a water tank 11 and fire box 12 in which there will be provided the usual grate 13 as shown in Fig. 3. The back 14 of the stove forms an air chamber through which passes the smoke pipe 15 and from which extends the air outlet pipe 16 for conveying heated air to the room to be heated. Boxes or housing 17 are placed infront of the air chamber 14 upon the top of the stove 10 and are removable so that when cooking, one or all of the boxes or housings may be removed in order to provide suflicient room. These housings are pro- Specification of Letters Patent.

vided with air inlet openings 18 having 010- sures 19 which control the passage of air into the housing through the air inlet openings. These closures are provided with supporting strips 20 which fit into the openings 18 and thus frictionally engage the walls of the housings to releasably hold the closures or valves in an open position. The housings 17 allow the passage of hot air therethrough and into the casing 14, hence when not using the top of the range for cooking the portion of such top covered by the housings heats the air coming into the housing through the adjustable inlets 18. The front upper portion of the casing 14 over-hangs the top of the range thereby providing an increased extent of heating surface for the air.
The water coil 21 will be positioned in the fire box 12 and is provided with a pipe 22 leading to the water tank 11 and with a pipe 23 leading to the radiator 24 through which the water will pass to heat the radiator and then return to the tank 11 through the return pipe 25. It will thus be seen that when a fire is built in the stove, the water will be heated and will circulate through the water heating system thus heating the radiator 24. It will also provide a supply of hot water in the tank 11 where it will be convenient for use. The smoke and other products of combustion will pass about the oven in the usual manner and up through the smoke pipe 15 thus heating air passing into the interior of the chamber 14. This heated air will pass out through the pipe 16 through suitable registers placed in rooms to be heated. It will thus be seen that there has been provided a stove of the usual cook stove type, so constructed that it may be used for heating purposes in a house. It will be further noted that with this device, the housings 17 can be removed when cookingthus preventing the device from taking room upon the top of the stove.
What is claimed is A range, a casing thereabove, a smoke pipe connected with the fire-box and passing upward through both ends of the casing, and the top of the range; and having adjustable having an exit at the back thereof, hot air air inlets in its upper surface. 10 flues connected to the casing at the upper In testimony whereof I affix my signature part of the ends thereof, the front upper in presence of two Witnesses.
