1 Claim.
It is an object and purpose of the present in vention to provide a very practical, useful, serviceable, durable and economically constructed form lock, which is certain in operation, and particularly simple in construction, sturdy and able to long withstand the heavy service to which it is subjected.
An understanding of the invention may be had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a plan view showing a type bed with a form locked therein, making use of the form lock of my invention,
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary enlarged plan viewof one end of the form lock at which its movable locking member is located,
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged vertical section, substantially on the plane of line 3-3 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary horizontal section of the end of the form lock shown in Fig. 2, substantially on the plane of line 44 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction indicated.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The type bed comprises a horizontal plate I, at the longitudinal edges of which are upwardly extending side bars or rails 2'. Between said rails adjacent one end of the bed I a transverse bar 3 is securely connected, against which one end of a form 4 is adapted to be pressed. In practice forms 4 for printing, when made up, are tied together by cords or the like 5 passing around the several parts which go to make up the form after they have been assembled, to keep them together when transferred to the structure in which they are to be locked.
The form lock of my invention includes upper and lower horizontal plates 6 and 1 of flat metal, which in length are slightly less than the distance between the inner sides of the side rails 2Q Said plates are separated from each other vertically by a pair of elongated channel bars 8 which extend lengthwise of the plates 6 and 1 parallel to the longitudinal edges thereof, the free edges of the flanges of the channel bars 8 being flush with the longitudinal edges of plates 6 and l, and the webs of the channels being located inwardly therefrom. Thus when the form lock is located against the opposite end of the form 4 there is ample space to receive the binding or tying cords 5 which pass along the end of the form against which the form lock is pressed. The channels 8 terminate, at one end at least, short of the ends of the plates 6 and 1.
Between the plates 6 and l, at one end thereof, a movable locking or pressure bar 9 is located across said plates. It carries a plurality of pins l0, shown as three in number. Said pins extend upwardly into two slots 12 and an opening [3 formed in the adjacent end of the upper plate 1 and downwardly into like slots and opening in the lower plate 6, the slots l2 extending to the ends of the plates and the openings I3 being of a greater diameter than the diameter of the pins [0 which pass through them and located a short distance inwardly from the adjacent end edges of said plates 6 and l.
The pressure bar 9 is adapted to be forced outwardly so that its outer side will extend beyond the adjacent end edges of plates 6 and I and be forced against the adjacent inner side of the associated rail 2. the other end of the form lock bearing against the inner side of the opposite rail. Such outward movement is accomplished by an eccentrically mounted cam disk M which is located between the spaced plates 6 and 1 beyond the ends of the channels 8 (Fig. 4), with a pin [5 extending through the disk,'ofi center with respect thereto, and having its ends received in bearing openings in said plates. The disk I4 is manually turned by a handle 16, extending outwardly therefrom beyond the outer longitudinal edges of the form, to force the pressure bar 9 outwardly with a heavy pressure against the side of the adjacent rail 2 and thus releasably lock the form lock securely in any place at which it is located, after it has been pressed against the opposite end of the form 4, thereby holding and locking the form in place and against movement.
The pins In in the slots [2 serve to guide the movable pressure bar 9 and the central pin l0 within the openings [3 maintains said bar against disconnection from the plates 6 and 1. The channels 8 and plates 6 and 1 being of fiat metal are readily spot-welded or otherwise permanently secured together. The structure is of an exceptionally strong and sturdy character and is of relatively light weight and one economically manufactured.
The invention is defined in the appended claim and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within its scope.
I claim:
The combination with a printers type bed having a base and spaced perpendicular sides of a form lock located on said base between said sides, comprising, upper and lower spaced flat plates, one of said plates at one end having a slot extending longitudinally of the plate and an opening within the confines of the plate, channel bars located between the plates at opposite longitudinal the plate having the slot and recess, pins in said 7 pressure bar extending respectively into said slot and recess, the pin in the slot having a. diameter equal to the width of the slot and the pin in the recess having a diameter lessithan that of the recess, a cam pivotally mounted between the plates 1 and engageable with said pressure bar and means for rotating said cam, said form luck .at one end engaging one of said sides of the bed and said pressure bar engaging the other of said sides.
