PORTABLE FENCE. I
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,830, dated May 30, 1882.
Application filed February 11, 1882. (No model.) 7
To all whom it may concern:
' taken down, and when in position is protected against violence by a barb-wire strung on central posts; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which I have carried it out.
In the drawings, A and B represent two panels of my improved fence. At one end of each panel theupperand lower bars are notched, as shown at O and D. The postE rises above the notch U and flush with the top of the bar; but the lower end of the post E is cut offfiush with the bottom of the notch D, as shown in Fig. 2. Atthe opposite end of the panel the upper and lower bars extend beyond the post F, and are notched, the upper on the under side at N and the lower on the upper side at P, and these two bars are connected together by a supplemental post, G, as shown in Fig. 2. The space between these two notches and within the supplemental bar G is exactly equal to the width between the notches O and D on the opposite end of the panel.
It is evident from this description that two 0 panels may be joined by first passing the top of the post E under the panel between the posts F and G, and then passing the lower end of the panel through the same opening, thus lockin g the two panels together, as shown in Fig. 1. Each panel is provided with a central post, H, rising any desired distance above the upper rail, and provided on its top with a ring or hook, I, in which is secured a strand, K, of barbed wire stretched horizontally along the whole line of fence. The hooks or rings 1 are made detachable, so as to facilitate the removal of the wire when the position of the fence is to be changed.
It is evident from this construction an interlocked portable fence is rendered secure against stock, and can be readily put up or taken down, when desired, without inconvenience from the wire strand. The use of the wire saves lumber in the construction of the fence.
Having thus described my invention, what I .Patent, is-- In a portable fence, a panel having at one end an upwardly-opening square notch, 0, both sides of the notch rising flush with the DANIEL B. WAGNER.
