My invention relates to cardcases or the like.

An important object of the invention is to provide a device of the above mentioned character so constructed that rounded edges are produced, and lines of stitching are covered from exterior view.

A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the sides of the inner pockets adjacent to their open ends may be bent back for convenient access to the pockets.

A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the pocket forming unit may be stitched to the body portion at the sides of the unit, and connected at the end of the unit with the body portion by interlocking tongues.

A further object of the invention is to provide a simplified unit for producing the pocket.

A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the pocket forming unit may have its inner covered portion formed of cheaper material than its outer portion, and providing for the interlocking tongue connection between the body portion and pocket forming unit.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings, the numeral 20 designates a. body portion blank, Figure 1, foldable upon a central transverse line 2 I, for forming

22 and 23, which are identical. The blank 20 is provided with intermediate longitudinal tongues 24, foldable upon lines 25, and outer longitudinal tongues 26, foldable upon lines 21. The

22 and 23 are provided at their ends with transverse tongues 28,

29. The tongues 28 are provided with locking tongues 30. At its corners, the blank 20 is provided with small tapered flaps 3|, adapted to be folded inwardly for providing rounded corners. All parts of the blank 20 are formed integral and the blank 20 may be made of leather, artificial leather, or anyother suitable material.

The numeral 32 designates a lining blank foldable upon a central transverse line 33 for forming lining sides 34. The blank 32 is provided with longitudinal intermediate tongues 35 foldable upon lines 36, as shown. The blank 32 may be formed of leather, artificial leather, or the like, but ordinarily is made of a thinner or cheaper material than the blank 20. 1

The numeral 37 designates a pocket forming unit in the form of an integral blank, including an intermediate side 38 and an outer side 39, foldable over the side 38 upon a transverse line 40. The

j intermediate side 38 is provided near its inner end and at its longitudinal edges with tapered longitudinal tongues 4|, foldable upon lines 42. The side 39 is provided with longitudinal tongues 43 foldable upon lines 44. The outer side 39 has tapered flaps 45, foldable inwardly to provide rounded edges.- The intermediate side 38 has a transverse group of longitudinally spaced slots 46, arranged inwardly of and near the folding line 48. Formed integral with the intermediate side 38 is an inner side 41, foldable upon a transverse line 48. The side 41 carries a transverse flap 49, foldable upon a line 50. The flap 49 is shorter than the inner side 41, which has beveled edges 5|. The unit 31 may be formed of leather, artificial leather or the like.

A pocket forming unit 52 is provided. This unit includes

blanks

53 and 54. The blank 54 may be formed of leather, artificial leather or the like, while the blank 53 is formed of similar :ma'teriaL but thinner or cheaper. The blank 53 includes an intermediate side '55 and an inner side 56, foldable upon transverse line 51. The side 55 has tapered tongues .55, foldable upon longitudinal lines 56. The inner side .56 is provided with a transverse .flap 58, foldable upon a transverse line 59, and the flap 58is shorter than the side 56 and the side has beveled ends .60, asshown. The blank 54 forms an outer side, :having longitudinal tongues 6|, foldable upon lines 62 and the side 54 has a transverse tongue =53 :foldable upon a line 64. The intermediate .side 55 .is provided upon its outer end with notches or openings 65 forming spaced tongues As shown in Figure 4, the transverse tongue a53 :maybe positioned upon the inner face of the side 55, and the tongue 63 secured to the tongues 66 rbya transverse line of stitching 61. Asclearly :shown in Figure 4, the line of stitching 61 secures the

63 and 66 together and when the openings 65 are reached the stitching 66 passes through the tongue 63 alone, Figures 5, :6 and '1. :It is thus apparent that the tongue 163 is not attached to the side 55 over the openings 65.

The .transverse lines of stitching 68, Figures .10 and 13, formed in the ends of the

39 and 54 extend through these sides alone and are for ornamentation only.

In assembling, the intermediate flaps 24, Figure 1, are folded inwardlyand the lining blank 32 is placed upon the blankand the sides :34 coincide with the sides 22 and'23 andthe tongues 35 are folded inwardly, Figures 1, 2 and 3. The inwardly folded tongues 24 and '35 are now secured together by lines of stitching 69, which extend through the blank 32, tongues 35 and tongues 24, but not through the blank 20, Fig

26 and 28 are now in the open position, Figure 2. The flaps 3| at the corners are shown open but they may now be folded inwardly and held in the inner position by cement or the like. The next step in assembling, Figure 8, is to arrange the pocket forming unit 31 and the pocket forming unit 52 upon the

20 and 32. The unit 31 has itsinner side 41 arranged vertically, while its intermediate side 38 is placed upon and coincides with theside 34 of the lining blank and the outer side 39 is flat or horizontal. The tongues 4| and 26 may now be folded inwardly over the inner face of the side 38. The pocket forming unit 52 has its inner'faoe 56 vertically arranged.. Figure8, and its intermediate side 55 is :arranged aupon and coincides with the :lining side 34, while the outer side 54 is horizontal or fiat. The tongues 55 and the tongues 26 may now be folded inwardly over the inner face of the side 55. The

The next step is to provide longitudinal lines of stitching 10 inconnection with the unit 31 which terminate at points 1|, and extend inwardly beyond the tongues 26 and pass through side 39, side 41, tongues 43, tongues 26, tongues 4|, and side 38, Figure 15, but not through

23 and 32. The side 55 corresponds to side 41, side 55 to side 38, and side 54 to side 39, and the arrangement of the stitching is identical with that shown in Figure 15. The lines of stitching 10 in connection with unit 52 terminate at points 1|, and these lines of stitching pass inwardly beyond the tongues 25 and pass through side 54, side 56, tongues 6| and side 55, but not through the sides :22 and 32. 41 and 56, the lines of stitching 10 do not pass through these flaps. These fiaps may therefore be folded back upon their folding lines, when desired. In sewing the lines-of stitching .18, .the same may -'be sewed when the several sides have been folded over each other as explained, by the use of a sewing machine which will sew tubular work, or one line of stitching may be sewed while the elements are properly assembled and arranged in a fiat position latterly outwardly of the body portion, and then swung over the body portion and the other line of stitching 10 sewed. The tongues 36 still project outwardly and the next step is to .insert these tongues into their openings. 'The tongues '30 provided at the end of the side 23 are now inserted into .the slots 46, Figures 8, 12 and 14, and interlocked with the side 38. This-can readily be done for the flap 49 may be folded back upon the line 50 so that .the fingersmay beinserted into the device to aid in threading in the locking tongues 30. After the locking tongues have been inserted, the flap 49 is foldedadown and covers the locking tongues 38, Figure 14. The

38 and 41 form a two layer partition and produce pockets 12 and 13,-open at their inner ends. The locking tongues 30 provided at the end of the side 22 are now passed through the openings 65, Figures '11 and 14, and engage behind the .line of stitching 61. The flap .58 'may .be folded back upon the line 59 :so that the fingers may be inserted for manipulation of the locking tongues .30 and after this the flap '58 is folded flat to cover these locking tongues .38. The 'sides 55 and 56 form a :two layer

14 and 15, open at their inner ends. The folder maybe folded transversely upon the .line 33 so that the two pocket units will be arranged in overlapping relation. Since the tongues '25 terminate at the tongues4| and'55', so thatsides 381an'd '55 are not secured to the body :portion throughout "the :length of .the tongues 4| and '55, the inner end portions .A, Figure 16, of the :two layer partitions including sides 38 and 141; .55 and 56, may be foldedback to provide easy success-to .the :pockets 12 and 14.

Since the pockets are open at their inner ends and closed at their outer ends, it is obvious that access is had to the inner ends of these pockets by swinging the overlapping portions of the closed folder to the open flat position, Figure 14. When the folder is folded over upon itself, the inner ends of the pockets are covered.

It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as a perferred example of the same and that various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of my invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:

1. A folder comprising body portion sides foldable over each other, said body portion sides having longitudinal tongues terminating short of their folding line and transverse end locking tongues, pocket forming units to be mounted upon the body portion sides, each unit comprising an intermediate side, a transversely foldable inner side and a transversely foldable outer side, the outer side having longitudinal tongues, the intermediate side having short longitudinal tongues adjacent to the inner side and a transverse group of openings adjacent to the outer side, the intermediate side of each unit being arranged next to the body portion side, the folded inner side next to the intermediate side and the folded outer side over and next to the inner side, the longitudinal tongues of the body portion side being foldable inwardly over the intermediate side and the short tongues of the intermediate side being foldable over such intermediate side and arranged adjacent to the inner ends of the longitudinal tongues of the body portion side and the longitudinal tongues of the outer side being foldable inwardly beneath the inner side, lines of stitching for each unit passing through the outer side, the inner side, the longitudinal tongues of the outer side, the longitudinal tongues of the body portion side and the intermediate side but not through the body portion side, and the locking tongues of each body portion side being passed through the openings of the intermediate side.

2, A folder comprising body portion sides foldable upon a transverse line and having longitudinal tongues and transverse end locking tongues, pocket units for the body portion sides, each pocket unit comprising an intermediate side, a transversely foldable inner side and a transversely foldable outer side, the outer side having longitudinal tongues, the intermediate side having a transverse group of openings adjacent to the outer side and the inner side having a foldable flap at its free end which is shorter than the inner side, the intermediate side being arranged next to the body portion side, the folded inner side next to the intermediate .side and the folded outer side over and next to the inner side, the longitudinal tongues of the body portion side being foldable over the intermediate side and the longitudinal tongues of the outer side being foldable inwardly beneath the inner side, lines of stitching for each unit passing through the outer side, the inner side, the longitudinal tongues of the outer side, the longitudinal tongues of the body portion side, and the intermediate side but not through the foldable flap and body portion side, and the locking tongues of each body portion side being passed through the openings of the intermediate side, the foldable flap of the inner side being movable to an open position to uncover the inserted locking tongues and to a closed position to cover them. 3. A pocket construction, comprising a first side provided at its side edges with longitudinal tongues, a pocket forming unit comprising permanently connected intermediate, inner and outer sides, the inner side being foldable upon the transverse line at the inner end of the intermediate side and the outer side being foldable upon the transverse line at the outer end of the intermediate side, the outer side having longitudinal tongues at its side edges and the intermediate side having short longitudinal tongues at its side edges and a transverse group of spaced openings cut therein near its outer end, a transverse group of locking tongues carried by the first side near its outer end, when assembled the intermediate side being arranged next to the first side, the inner side next to the intermediate side and the outer side next to the inner side, the longitudinal tongues of the first side being foldable over the intermediate side and'having their inner ends terminating substantially at the short tongues carried by the intermediate side and folded over the inner face of the intermediate side, the longitudinal tongues of the outer side being foldable under the inner side, and lines of stitching passing through the outer side, the inner side, the longitudinal tongues of the outer side, the longitudinal tongues of the first side, the short longitudinal tongues of the intermediate side and the intermediate side and not through the first side. i

4. A pocket construction comprising a first side having locking tongues, a pocket forming unit to be arranged upon the first side and including permanently connected intermediate side, inner side and outer side, the intermediate side and the inner side being formed from an integral blank and the inner side being foldable upon a transverse line at the inner end of the intermediate side, the intermediate side being provided at its opposite end with a transverse group of spaced teeth having openings between them, the outer side being provided at its inner end with a transverse tongue which is superposed upon the teeth, a continuous line of stitching passing through the transverse tongue of the outer side and the teeth of the intermediate side, when assembled the intermediate side being arranged next to the first side, the inner side next to the intermediate side and the outer side next to the inner side, means securing together the longitudinal edge portions of the first side, the intermediate side, the inner side and the outer side, the locking tongues of the first side being inserted through the openings provided between the teeth of the intermediate side, said locking tongues extending to the inner face of the intermediate side.

In a folder of the character described, as a sub-combination, a first side having locking tongues, a unit including an intermediate side and an inner side and a separate outer side, the intermediate side having a transverse group of spaced openings forming teeth between them and the outer side having a transverse tong-ue ar ranged in superposed relation to the spaced teeth, a continuous line of stitching passing through the transverse tongue and the spaced teeth, when assembled all of said sides being arranged in superposed relation, the locking tongues of the fflrst aside being inserted through the openings formediby'theteethof thejntermediate'side, and means for securing together the :side edges of all oisaidsides.

6. A pocket forming unit comprising a first side provided with locking tongues, permanently connected intermediate, innerend cuter sides, the inner side being foldable upona transverse line eit one end of the intermediate side, the :inner side being provided "at its opposite end with a 'foldable flap-terminating at itsends short-:ofthe side edges of the inner-side, the outer side being foldahle upon-afitransverse line at the opposite 'end of :the intermediate side, the intermediate side being provided with a transverse group of openings arrangedadjacent to the outer sidegthe docking tongues of the first side being inserted through said openings, the first side, the intermediate side, the inner side and theouter :side being arranged in superposed relation and the Fflap serving toucover and uncover said openings,

and imeans for securing "together "the longitudinal edgeportions :of all of :the assembled-sides.
