Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WIDLER S. SPONHAUER, OF FORT WAYNE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM ROGERS, OF ALLEN COUNTY, INDIANA.
BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,326, dated May 23, 1882.
Application filed April 8, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WIDLER S. SPONHAUER, of Fort Wayne, Allen county, Indiana, have invented certain Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is a buckle constructed, as fully described hereinafter, so as to be readily applied to and adjnstabl y unite heavy straps, such as are used for harness.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View, showing a part of a trace with my ilnproved buckle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sec tion of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side view, the buckle open. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the parts detached.
The buckle consists of three parts-the loop A, having curved side arms a a and crossbars I) c, the latter receiving the loop of the strap B, the tongue-plate D, carrying a pin, cl, and provided with curved side arms ff, connectcd by a cross-bar, e, and the union-plate E, having side pieces, 9 g, cross-bars h h, the latter notched at w, arms I I, with notches yy, connected by a cross-rod, m. The side pieces, 9 9, have notches s 8, through which the side arms a a of the loop A extend when the parts are in the positions shown in Figsl and 2, the upper strap, H, extending between the side bars through the loop A, and also between the armsff of the tongue-plate D, which extend through the slots 3 3 thus serving to connee-t all the parts loosely together, which otherwise can be easily separated.
When the end of the strap H is introduced the parts are arranged as shown in Fig. 3, permitting the strap to slide in or out until properly adjusted, when the plate D is turned down flat upon the strap, with its pin d in one of the holes of the strap. The strap B is then pulled out, when the loop A will be turned down with its cross-bar 11 bearing upon the tongue-plate D with a force proportioned to the draft.
By this construction I can readily unite the heaviest straps, yet permit instant adjustment or detaching when necessary.
'It will be seen that the parts maybe readily and cheaply east and fitted together without nice finishing.
I claim- The combination, in a buckle, of a loop, A, having side arms and cross-bars, a lock-plate, D, provided with a pin, (1, armsff, and crossbar 0, and a union-plate E, having recessed side pieces, gg, cross-pieces h h, notched arms l l, and a cross-bar, in, all substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WIDLER S. SPONHAUER.
Witnesses} WILLIAM ROGERS, MARTIN O. SENSENY.
