Application November 22, 1946, Serial No. 711,494 j 1 claim. v(c1. zei- 92) The invention relates to an air cleaner, air cooler and air conditioning apparatus. The primary object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character which may be'operated wholly within a room or enclosure, serving strictly as an air cleaner, by removing dust, lint, and other impurities from the air, and em# ploying a non-evaporative liquid, therefore adding nothing to the air, for use in places such as coal mines, the grinding room of factories and the like.
Another object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character, which may be adapted for use in a furnace room in conjunction with a hot air furnace having several distribution ducts for air to carry heatto the various tioned air by blowing into the cool air inlet of such hot air furnace.
In summer when no ire is in the furnace,
said apparatus operates as an air conditioner, cooling air by evaporation, cleaning air of impurities and distributing air in the various rooms of enclosure through the furnace hot air system.
A further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus for use in districts with low humidity, for cooling, cleaning and moistening air within an enclosure. The apparatus is installed wholly outside of the enclosure, with the air outlet thereof attached to a window or other wall opening, the apparatus being effective to force warm stale'air out cf theenclosure by the introductionof fresh air which has been cooled, cleaned and moisturized while passing through the apparatus, thereby lowering the sensible temperature within said enclosure by evaporation of the liquid employed.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of the character set forth having a tightly constructed housing of novel design with an air inlet and outlet at right angles to each other, having a iluid coupling torque driven revolving cylindrical filter pad washed by immersion in Water as the lter rotates, the liquid level being predetermined and controlled by a float valve connected to the liquid supply under pressure.
A still further object of the invention is to Said air condiprovide an evaporative cooler, having a vaned driving member located outside or behind the air filter to reduce noise in operation and taking in air at atmospheric pressure, pushing the air throughv the apparatus thereby increasing the volume and eiciency above apparatus in general'use.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an apparatus of this character having an air defiector of conical shape, located Within the cylindrical filter, the cone pointing into the air stream and delecting the air ow outwardly from the cylinder axis'and through the filter pad, thus eliminating air pockets.
With the foregoing objects in view, the invention has further reference to certain features of accomplishment which will become apparent as the description proceeds, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure l is a rearperspective view of an evap.
orative cooling apparatus constructed according to the invention, partly broken away.
Figure 2 is an exploded View of the elements of the machine, from which has been omitted f the scroll housing. r Y,
Figure 3- is a front.` perspective ...view of the the housing, in vertical section showing the floatV and valve. 1
Figure 8 is a vdetail perspective view ofthe access door closure of the housing, 'and Figure 9 is a detail View of a combination overflow pipe and drain.
Continuing with a more detailed description of the drawing, reference numeral I0 denotes a scroll housing having a longitudinal air outlet Il in one side and an air inlet i2 in one of the end plates I3. The inlet opening l2 is encircled by a reinforcing ange ifi which is affixed to the interior surface'of the end plate, while exteriorly thereof, a fan housing l5 is s'ecured to the end plate to embrace a fan IB. An access opening l1 is provided in the machine housing lil, to cover which is an arcuated plate I8 (Fig. 8). Opposite the opening I1 and embracing the discharge opening of the housing l is a panel I9 whose opening 20 has a reticulated covering 2| through which air enters a room when emerging from the housing I0.
Rotatably arranged in the housing IU is a cylindrical nlter 22 of wood or glass bers. The fibrous mat 22 is mounted on a foraminous cylindrical frame 23, the latter having a flange 2li at one end which is centrally supported on an axial shaft 25 by means of a radial series of arms 26. Disposed within the 'filter 22 is a conie form air deector 21 whose apex is directed towards the inlet opening I2 of the housing lil while its opposite end closes the end of the nlter 22 opposite the inlet end of the housing.
The shaft 25 extends entirely through the lte and deector 21, with oneend Journaled in a anged bushing 2g, aiiixed to 'the outside of an end plate 23, while the opposite end oi the shaft against by the -fan I6, previously mentioned and y which llatter is driven by an electric motor 34. A member 35 (Fig. l) aiiixed across the air Ainlet opening in vone end of the machine provides a support for the gear housing 3| while the fan motor 34 is suspended by a bracket arm 3E depending in the circular fan housing l5.
In operation, the machine is installed to oper ate in a window, furnace room or any other place wherein it is desired to influence the temA perature or humidity of the air and a source oi' water is connected to the iioat valve 36 (Fig. '12), and the motor is connected to a source of electrical supply, by means of a service line 31 Figs. 3 and 4). Upon operating a switch 38, the motor is started to operate the fan i6 and the air influenced into the fan housing I5 thereby will inrpinge and set in motion the fan 33, the latter, in turn, `driving the rotary iilter 22 at ja reduced speed. by virtue of the speed reducing gears in housing 3l.
Water entering the housing l0 is controlled by the noat 39 to maintain a .predetermined level and adjacent this oat 'is an overow and vdrain pipe 40, The lter 22, in revolving, is continuously wetted by water in the bottom of the housing I 0 in which the lower portion of the lter is submerged. As the aile'nters the open end of the filter 22, it is caused by the conical defiector 21 to iioW outwardly through the lter in all directions and finally emerge from the nous ing through the outlet opening 20 devoid of entrained particles but suflciently -moisturized to lower its temperature for the comfort of room occupants.
