Claims.
This --invent-ion relates to the construction and will enable thesink to be quickly and readilyinstalled in position with a flush joint sealing the edge of the surrounding linoleum or other fabric covering for the sink boards and which will ensure a positive water-tight seal betweenv the sink edge and the surrounding linoleum to prevent water from seeping under the edge of the sink thus effectively precluding deterioration and rottingofthe linoleum and drain board located beneath the sink edge.
A further and important object is to provide a sink structure which can be cast as an integral unit to include the means to enable the watertight seal between the sink edge and the surrounding linoleum or overlay to beefiected.
A still further object is to provide a sink which can be quickly installed and the sealing edge joint effected without requiring skilledqlabour or special tools.
The principal feature of the invention consists in providing a sink adapted to seat in an opening in a drain board covered with linoleum or other fabric overlay, the sink having an outwardly flanged upper edge to overlap the surrounding edge of the drain board opening and incorporating means to enable the surrounding edge of the drainboard overlay to be clamped vtoftheundera side of the sink flange and providingclamping means co-operating withthe sink means forsecurely clamping the overlay in a water-tight seal against the sink flange to prevent them-- gress of water beneath the edge of the sink to deteriorate and rot the overlay and drain board;
A further and important feature consists in forming the sink as a cast unit with the in corporated means for co-operating with the over.- lay clamping meansformed as integralbolt-retaining recesses formed in the castingoperation.
Referring to the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary plan view of a sink installat-ion embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, clearly showing the construction of the sink and the mannerin which the-drain boardoverlay is clampedto the underside of the edgelthereof.

In the past a great deal ofdifficulty has been experienced in forming and maintaining a watertight joint between the rim of a sink andt-helinoelum or 'fabricoverlay covering the supporting drain board in which the sink is mounted.
The necessity of having a water-tight edge seal or joint has long been realized as the'ingress of moisture beneath the edgeof the sink leads to rotting of the overlay and supporting wood frame. In extreme cases a poor joint will=permit the water from the drain board to spill onto the flooring beneath the sink.
The present invention has been devised toovercome the above diiilculty by. ensuring that a water-tight seal or joint is effected between the drain board overlay and thesink edge.
With reference to the accompanying drawings,

To enable this clamping ring E9 to be forced into clamping engagement with the overlay, clamping means in the form of plates 20 and the bolts l6 are provided. These plates 2!] are formed with an orifice 2i to receive the shank of the bolts l6 and are provided with an upturned edge 22.
In utilizing the clamping plates 20 the plates are pushed on to the bolts I6 with the one edge contacting the bottom 23 of the leg portion 12 of the angled projection I l and with the upturned edge 22 contacting the clampin ring IS, the nut 24 serves to tighten the clamping plates into clamping arrangement about the fulcrum provided by the bottom 23 of the projections I i.
It will thus be seen that in installing my sink the bolts l6 are first inserted into the T-shaped slots as formed by the recesses H and slots l4 and the sink inserted into the opening 3 provided in the drainboard with the bevelled underside I of the sink rim or flange 9 being supported on the corresponding bevelled edge 5 of the opening with the linoleum or overlay 6 held between the sink flange and edge of the drain board with the edge strip I, which extends inwardly of the opening 3, engaging the underside of the sink rim.
It will be appreciated of course that the arrangement of the bevelled surfaces 5 and it! will permit a flush joint to be effected between the sink and drain board.
Next, the clamping rin [9 is placed in position around the sink.
The clamping plates 20 are then pushed on the bolts in position with the one edge contacting the bottom 23 of the sink projection leg l2 and with the upturned edge engaging the clamping ring.
The nuts 25 are then threaded on the bolts to urge the edge 22 of the plates 29 into forceful engagement with ring 19 to effect a very secure and water-tight joint between the underside of the sink flange and the overlay.
It will be appreciated that the clamping effect of the plates 20 is greatly enhanced by providing the fulcrum arrangement as formed by the leg l2 of the sink projection.
It has been found in actual practice that it is advantageous to support the underside of the edge strips 1 of the linoleum or overlay to prevent the clamping ring [9 or the edge of the opening 3 from rupturing the overlay material.
I have shown this reinforcing of the underside of the fabric edge strip I accomplished by the use of a ring 25 of relatively thin metal interposed between the clamping ring 19 and the edge of the overlay and extendin over the edge of the opening 3 in the drain board.
It will be readily appreciated that my sink may be cast as an integral unit with the projections ll formed in the casting operation to provide a relatively inexpensive sink structure.
It will also be readily appreciated that the drain board may be quickly erected and the linoleum or overlay placed in position and the sink installed, requiring the minimum of labour and time.
Not only is the installation of the sink exceedingly simple, requiring neither skilled labour nor special tools, but the joint effected between the sink and the drain board overlay will be ex- 75 the underside of the free unsupported portion of tremely effective to preclude the possibility of water seeping beneath the sink rim or flange.
In forming the recesses I! it will be understood that the recesses are of sufiicient width to just receive the bolt head and the bolt will be prevented from freely turning in the recess to permit the nut 24 to be tightened.
In the event that the joint beneath the sink and the overlay becomes impaired due to shrinkage of the overlay material, it is merely necessary to tighten the clamping plates 20 to renew the water-tight seal.
While I have shown one particular arrangement for effectin the clamping of the linoleum or overlay to the underside of the sink flange, it will be appreciated that other forms of clamping arrangements may be utilized without departing from the scope of my invention.
What I claim as my invention is:
1. A sink installation comprising a drain surface having an opening formed therein to receive a sink, an overlay material covering said drain surface and projecting inwardly beyond the edge of said drain surface opening, a sink inserted in said opening and having an outwardly extending rim extending over the edge of said opening and engaging over said overlay material, a clamping ring arranged beneath said rim and overlay material for compressing the portion of the overlay material projecting inwardly beyond the edge of said opening against the underside of the sink rim and urging the edge of said rim into said overlay material to provide a water-tight seal around the rim, and means carried by said sink to enable said clamping ring to be applied and maintained in clamping relation.
2. A sink installation comprising a drain board having an opening formed therein to receive a sink, an overlay of compressible material covering said drain board and projecting inwardly beyond the edge of said opening, a sink inserted in said opening and having an outwardly extending rim bevelled to a thin edge and supported by the edge of said opening and engaging over said overlay material, a clamping ring for compressing and clamping the portion of the overlay material projecting inwardly beyond the edge of the drain board opening against the underside of the sink rim, and clamping means supported solely by said sink for urging said clamping ring into clamping engagement with said overlay material and urging the edge of said bevelled rim into said compressible overlay material to provide a watertight seal at the rim edge.
3. A device as claimed in claim 2 in which the edge of said drain board opening is bevelled to correspond to the bevel of said sink rim to provide a flush joint between said sink and said drain board the weight of said sink holding said sink in supported relation on said drain board with said bevelled edges in juxtaposition, said sink being attached solely to said compressible overlay material.
4. A sink installation comprising a drain board having an opening formed therein to receive a sink and having the upper edge of said opening bevelled, a compressible overlay material covering said drain board and projecting inwardly beyond the edge of said opening, a sink inserted in said opening having an outwardly extending rim bevelled corresponding to the said bevelled drain board edge to a thin edge and engaging over said overlay material, a clamping ring surrounding the underside of said sink rim and engaging said overlay material extending beyond the edge of said drain board opening, means supported solely by said sink for actuating said clamping ring to compress said free unsupported portion of the overlay material against said sink rim and for urging the thin edge of said sink rim in a direction to penetrate into the surface of said overlay material to provide a liquid-tight seal around the sink rim.
5. A sink installation providing a water-tight seal around the sink rim and requiring preforming of a drain board only to the extent of cutting an opening therein to receive the sink, comprising in combination a drain board having an opening therein, a sink having an outwardly extending rim to engage over the edge of said drain board opening, a compressible overlay material having an opening to receive the sink and smaller than said drain board opening to define an unsupported overlay portion around the perimeter of said latter opening projecting within said drain board opening when said sink is inserted in said drain board opening with said overlay material overlying said drain board, a clamping ring ar- MILTON D.
