VSuch devices of .the prior art have amarked disadvantage that'unless the compressor'plates are .disengaged from Ythe .nutsj-they move toward and.A away from each other simultaneously/'It may be very necessary and desirable to move one compressor plate without moving the other. This cannot be done without disengaging one or both nuts from the screw thread one way or another. It is an important object of my invention to avoid this disadvantage of other devices of the prior art and to provide means whereby both compressor plates are engaged to their respective driving screws at all times, but in which one blade may be moved or driven without driving the other.
Another object of my invention is to provide separate screws for each of the compressor blades so that one may be replaced without necessitating replacement of the other.
Other and further features and objects of the invention will be more apparent to those skilled in the art upon a consideration of the accompanying drawings and following specifications, wherein is disclosed a single exemplary embodiment of the invention, with the understanding, however, that such changes may be made therein as fall within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In said drawings: y
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a tray binder constructed according to one embodiment of my invention. The operating crank is shown suspended in front of the tray in full lines and illus- ...4 claims. (circa-'16) trated in dotted lines. on thesba'ck ofthe compres.- sor Aplate where it maybe. stowed whenl not inuse. Referring nowY to the drawings: v In-v a .preferred embodiment of.: my `inventionj' employ 1a hollow ibase VIllkhaving rounded corners and slotted at .i Itofpermittheears I2 and I3 Of traveling: nuts I4 *and .-I6 to project `upwardly throughthe base.
I preferably employ a rectangularrrail Ilto surround the-.supporting area'formed'by the platformlc I of the base I0.
, In :the structurehere shown, a follower' block nut gt4 Iand .fthe @compressor plate AI 9 :isy hingedly mounted on the upper edge of this follower block I3. The holding bracket 2I may be engaged in any one of several positions to the ear 20 of follower block I8. y
The ears I3 of rear traveling'nut I6 have upwardly projecting brackets 22 on which the rear compression plate 23 is pivotally engaged.
In order to drive the nuts I4 and I6, I provide two screws 3l and 32 (see Figs. 3 and 4). The left hand screw 3| is threadedly engaged in the nut I4 and may be rotated by the squared end 35| or by means of the small gear 33 which is mounted on the threaded shaft. The pitch of this screw 3| is usually three times that of the screw 32.
The screw 32 has threaded engagement in the rear follower nut I6 and may be rotated by means of the squared end 322 or by the spur gear 34.
In order, then, to move the front follower block and compressor plate, it is necessary only to rotate the drive spline 3II by means of the drive shaft or crank 36 which is rotated by handle 31.
Normally, rotation of the drive spline 3II will l produce 'rotation of the gear 34 and shaft 32A through the agency of the spur gear 33, but the stub shaft 322 may be movedrearwardly so as to move 'the spur gear 34 out of register with the spur gear This'is accomplished by placing the drive shaft 36 over the drive spline 322 and 32 may be rotated either by splined drive portions y 3H or 322, but if it is desired to ldrive only the rear nut I6 without moving the front drive nut I4, the splined shaft 322 is engaged by the crank 36 and pushed inwardly so that the splined portion slides into the shaft 32 and this disengages the spur gear 34 from spur gear 33. In this man-y ner the compressor plate may be moved anywhere on the platform I 0i. On release of the pressure on the driving spline 322, the spring 39 will cause the movable spur gear 34 to again engage the spur gear 33 so that drive of both shafts may be produced as before.
Although I have described a specific embodiment of my invention, it is apparent that modications thereof may be made by those skilled in the art. Such modifications may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention as set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a tray binder, a base, a pair of feed screws mounted for rotation in the base and extending in parallel relation from front to rear of the base, a compressor plateand follower block threadedly engaged on one feed screw and another compressor plate andY follower block having threaded engagement on the other feed screw, gear means disengaging said gears, said means including a drive handle engageable to one of said feed screws for'rotation thereof and movable longitudinally relative thereto.
3. In artray binder, a base, a pair of feed screws mounted'for rotation in the base and extending in parallel relation from front to rear of the base, a compressor plate and follower block threadedly engaged on onev feed screw andV another coma pressor plate and 'follower block having threaded engagement on the other feed screw, gear means for driving one feed screw from the other feed screw, and means including an operating handle for optionally and slidably shifting said gear means out of engagement, the said operating handle being adapted for rotating one of said feed screws.
4. Inria tray binder, a base member, a front compressor plate and a rear compressor plate mounted on the base member for longitudinal relative movement, a pair of longitudinally extending 1feed screws, the rst of said feed screws being threadedly engaged to the front compressor Vplate and the second feed screw being threadedly for sliding disengagement from the other of said spur gears, and an operating handle engageable withthe last mentioned feed screw and rmovable for driving one feed screw from the other, and
threadedly engaged therewith, gears on said feed screws, and means for selectively engaging or longitudinally relative thereto for optionally disengaging the movable spur gear from the other spur gear and for selectively ,driving the last mentioned Vfeed screw with or without the spur gears in engagement.
