Be `it known that I, LEONARD J. Hoes, a
Vcitizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Filing- Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to holders or receptacles for cards or sheets for records, indexing, correspondence or like data used in connection with iiling'systems and'has for an object to provide a device for retaining in convenient accessible form a maximum number of cards, sheets or other filing means in a minimum amount of floor space. A further object of the invention is to provide a tiling device embodying a plurality of rotatable holders or receptacles mounted normally one above another in such close proximity as to conceal the contents of any of the holders but which in use may be independently shifted so that any desired holder may be brought toa position where its contents are visible and not obstructed bythe next or adjacent holder. A further object is to provide a `means whereby the filed data in any one of the holders is accessible from more than one predetermined point, whereby several'persons may use the device at oneY and the same time.
For the purpose of illustrating my inven-r tion, I have shown in the accompanying drawings one'form thereof which is at present preferred by me, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to theY precise arrangement and organization of the instrumentalities as herein shown and de scribed. l

My 'present invention comprehends broadly a construction embodying a plurality of card holders or containers arranged in substantially superposed relation each of which is independently rotatable and laterally removable with respect to the remaining holders. Inthe preferred form l designates a pair of standards suitably spaced apart and to which the plates 2 are secured at suitable intervals in order to provide operating spaces to receive the card holders 3. Since the several plates 2, as well as the holders 3 are of similar construction and copcrate in a like manner, the present description will be conined toy one set,'but all like parts will be given corresponding reference numerals. Taking therefore one of the plates 2 as an example, 4 designates the body part which has its ends connected respectively by screws 5 or like means to the standards l and is provided intermediate its ends with a guide member 6 which extends laterally therefrom. This member 6 is preferably slotted as shown at 7 and has the walls of the slotundercut to form ways 8 in which one head 9 of the cross-head is mounted for sliding movement. The cross-head in the present instance, consists of a hub l() mounted for rotation upon the pin 1l the ends of which are fixed to the heads 9 as will be apparent. The heads 9 are each undercut or slotted at two opposite sides l2 for the puru engaging the ways 8 of the plate 2, it'being of course understood that the head at one end of the cross-head engages with one plate while-the other head bearing in the ways of the plate above. Each plate therefore guides two of the head members one from the cross-head above and the other from the cross-head below though the parts are of course so supported and assembled as not to strike or interfere one with another. Preferably I employ a ball bearing 13 between the hub 10 and lower crosshead 9 to take the downward thrust due to the weight of the parts. The hub 10 is preferably cast integral with the arms 14 form'- ing a spider construction, which carries the holders or card troughs 3, each of which Vis preferably of circular contour and sub stantially U-shapcd in cross-section having' inner and outerv circumferential,walls 15 and V16. The cards 17 are arranged, as here shown, transversely Vbetween the walls 15 pand 16, resting upon the bottom 18 and .mayv be removedor replaced at willfas'desired.
'Suitable spacing elements 19 are provided for subdividing the cards into' groups or classes' and these elements arefpreferably `removable thus providing for adjustment of the size ofthe card groups. For this pur pose, each of the elements 19 is provided with depending lugs 2O which are adapted to seat in apertures 21 formed in the bottom' of the card trough or holder. These aper-V I Vtures 21 maybe located at regular or any suitable .intervals and thereby provide a large number of places for positioning Vthe elements 19 for suitable groupingoil the cards, and the size of the card'groups thus Y varied at will to--suit the convenience .of the user. In the: present embodiment of my invention, it willbe noted that substantially all 'the available space within the connnes of the device is utilized, since the 'several holders or troughs are superposed in substantially abutting` Vrelation andin view ofy the laterally movable feature of each holder, it is unnecessary to provide a considerable space between the holders in order to see thecards. In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown amodiiied' construction embodying the broad conception of a movable axis for the respective holders orreceptacles and in which 2S designates a standard having its upper end formed as a bearing for a rotatable head 29.; In the present instance the head 29 is in the form of a cap seating upon a suitable ball Yrace 30 supported by the standard 28l and vhaving a plate 31 securedthereto which re-V ceives motion from a gear 32. In order to lock the head or cap 29 against rotation as desired I preferably provide a spring pressed latch 33 in theV form of aplunger which is guided ina fixedrpart of the standard and is adapted to engage the one or" a.

The return of the rack 39 to normal position is preferably bythe spring 41 which also serves to maintain a clutch 43 in engagement. The spring 4l has therefore the double function of holding the clutch in engagement whileV under compression and causingthe pinion 42 to rotate by its torsional action. A; pinion 42 meshes with the rack 39 and transmitsmotion to theY springv pressed clutch 43'. which actuates the bevel"V jgear 44 for imparting movement-to the gear 32. Suitable pulleys 45 and 46 are employed as guidesforthe respective connections and 40, while the brackets serveto Ysupport the actuating mechanism just described.
Referring' to the holder' or receptaclefconl structionand the axial supports therefor, 48 designates a journal fixed to the head 29 and having the rotatable hub 49 of one of the holder supports mounted thereon. In Vusing the term cards throughout the speciiication, Iwishfit particularly'understood that I do so in a broad sense and that it implies the use of letter files, index- 130 Y ing means or any type of device for filing data and is not to be restricted or limited in any way to what is known technically as a card.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of theinvention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages. v
What I claim is: In a device of the character stated, the combination of a plurality of holders for filing devices, crank arms forming respec tively journals for said holders, and common means for connecting and supporting said crank arms for rotary movement, whereby a plurality of said holders may be simultaneously swun to a new position and each being indepen ently rotatable of the others.
