3 Claims. (Cl. 98-83) 1V l This invention relates to a smoke pipe top and vmore particularly to an adjustable smoke pipe top capable of being installed upon various diameters of smoke pipes.
The principal object yof the invention is the provision of a smoke pipetop that may be installed on a number of different sizes of smoke pipes.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a smoke pipe top that can be shipped in a knocked-down form with the various parts nested so as to reduce shipping space. l
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a smoke pipe top which can be readily assembled at the time of sale or installation from a few simple parts.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a smoke pipe top which can be securely positioned on a large number of diierent sizes of smoke pipes. The smoke pipe top shown and described herein comprises an improvement in the art in that it may be manufactured more easily, shipped more efficiently and assembled more rapidly than the smoke pipe tops heretofore known. Additionally, and importantly, the smoke pipe top may be adjusted to match the diameter of the particular smoke pipe on which it is to be installed as its structure is so arranged as to permit a wide degree of adjustment in this respect.
The smoke pipe tops heretofore known in the art have been factory assembled from a number of component parts including the conical top portion and the clamping or draw band,'these portions usually being made up and assembled in a number of varying sizes which' require a relatively large inventory on the part of the distributor as a different size of smoke pipe top was necessary for each different sizeof smoke pipe upon which the devices were to be positioned.
The present invention, on the contrary, makes it possible to make up one or two sizes of parts, assemble them into one or two sizes of smoke pipe tops and these in turn are capable of ready adjustment to the individual size of the smoke pipe on which they are to be positioned. Additionally, the common practice in the art has been to spot weld or securely fasten the various parts of the smoke pipe yassembly to one another which required rather bulky shipping containers and the necessity of devoting a large storage area to the oustomary'inventory.
The present invention is so devised that the top portion and the mounting portion are shipped separately and assembled by sheet metal screws at the time of sale or installation. v This enables the device to be shipped nested. A number of the units can, therefore, be placed in a single container which results in a savings in shipping costs and a marked savings in space needed for inventory of the devices.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodimentof the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side view of the smoke pipe top with parts broken away and parts in cross section.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the smoke pipe top.
Figure 3 is a bottom plan view of the smoke pipe top.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan View showing the smoke pipe top adjusted to a different size.
By referring to the drawings and Figures l, 2 and 3 in particular it will be seen that a smoke pipe top has been disclosed which comprises a top portion lil which is conical in shape and of a desired diameter. An inverted transverse channel Il, having inturned flanges, is secured to the conical top portion I0 as by metal screws |2-I2. Vertically positioned, horizontally movable brackets l3-I3 are mounted with their uppermost ends l4-|4 slidably engaged in the inverted channel l I and in oppositely disposed relation with respect to one another. rIhe brackets |3-I3 are notched to provide clearance for the inturned flanges of the channel H. A two-part draw band assembly l5 and ISA is positioned horizontally between the brackets I3-l3 and secured thereto as by rivets I6.
Y The device thus far described will be seen to be adapted for positioning on the upper end of a smoke pipe with the draw band assembly clamped thereabout and the brackets I3-I3 extending thereabove and supporting the top portion l0 in elevated relation to the upper end of the smoke pipe. In order that the draw band assembly may be clamped about a smoke pipe, each of the parts l5 and I5A thereof is substantially identical and positioned in oppositely disopenings and posed relation to the other and each has an outwardly vextending flattened U-shaped fold I1 and I'IA thereon and each has a vertical crease I8 and I8A near one of the outermost ends thereof. Openings are formed in the flattened U-shaped folds I1 and I'IA and in the end sections of the draw band adjacent the vertical creases I8 and I8A. Theopposite endsof each of the two parts I and I5A of the draw band assembly have flattened. U-shaped folds I9 and ISA, respectively, formed thereon at approximately right angles to the draw band and openings are iiattened U-shaped folds I9 and ISA. These formed in the draw band on the'same horicontal plane so that nut and bolt assemblies 20 and 29A may be positioned therethrough as shown in Figure 3. It will be observed that the bolts 20 and 20A pass through the attened U-shaped folds I'IA andY I9 and I1 and ISA, respectively. l
It will be observed that the end sections of the two-part draw band'assenibly defined by the vertical creases" I8 and' iSAl lie on the same circular pattern as'the remainder of the draw band assembly I5 and 55A when the boltsftil and 20A are positioned' as shown in Figure 3 as thesaid end sections are flattened against the smoke 'which the device is installed when the bolts Eiland 26A are positioned as just described toforinY a draw band of relatively small diameter'.
In adjusting the draw band assembly' for a larger siner of pipe than permitted by the lengths of the'olts Eiland 20A, the bolts 23 and 20A are renoved and ria-positioned through the attened U-sh'apd folds dand 19A, respectively, and the end sections of the draw bands adjacent the vertical creases I8 and IBA, respectively. Thus, the additional metal in each of the draw band parts `I5 and IEA and lying between the flattened folds II and IlA and the vertical creases I3 and IBA is effectively added tothe draw bands whereby a larger diameter of pipe may be secured therein. It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that it is necessary to bend the end sections of the L draw band assemblies on the vertical creases I8 and ISA so that they extend outwardly at siibstantially right angles thereto. It will thus be "seen that the two-part draw band assembly and the formation of the several flattened U-shaped folds therein as well as the vertical creases deflning the end sections, as hereinbefore described, make possible the adjustability of the said draw band to many and various Sizes of smokepipes.
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art lt'hat in altering the diameter of the draw band assembly the horizontal spacing between the `brackets I3-I3 will of necessity change and by referring again to Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings it will be seen that .wl'en'V the device is adjusted for installation on a larger or smaller smoke pipe,v the inturned ends i4 ofv the brackets I3, whichY are slidably engaged in the channel I I, are moved inwardly or outwardly as the case may be and secured in desired position as by self-tapping metal screws '2i as shown in Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.
` In Figures 2, 3 and i of the drawings additional brace members 2 I-2I are shown secured at their opposite ends to the opposite sides of the conical top II)y as by fasteners 22'-22. The brace memformed theV those heretofore" mentioned are" been disclosed which meets thesev'eral objects of vthe invention and which provides a convenient `and practical device which may be installed on any and all sizes and kinds of pipes as the same mai7 be readily and easily adjusted to the particular size desired.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A smoke pipe top comprising in combination a conical topr portion, an inverted channel secured vto said conical top portion across the open end'thereof, and a pair of inverted L-shaped brackets portions of'which are slidably fastened in said channel and held thereby in oppositely disposed relation, and portions of which depend therefrom, a half-circular section of a draw band secured to the lower end of each ofsaid depending portions of said brackets and-in oppositely disposed relation to one another, and fasteners adjustably securing the ends of said half-circular sections of said draw band to one another.
2. A smoke pipe top comprising in combination a conical top portion, an inverted channel secured in said conical top 'portion crosswise thereof, said channel having int'urnedanges, andv a pair 'of' notched inverted Lcshaped brackets portions of'whi'ch are 'sdlidabiy positionedv in said channel in oppositely disposed relation, 'and por= tions of which depend therefrom, anali-circular section of' a draw band secured to the lower end of each of said depending' portions of said brackets and positioned in oppositely' disposed relation to one another, and fasteners adjust'- ably securing the ends of said half-circular sections kof said draw band to one another.
3. Asrno'ke'pipe top comprising in combination a conical top portion, an inverted channel of a length sufficient to span the conical top portion at its widest point and removably secured thereto at its ends, a pair of notched brackets having the portions on one side of said notches slidably positioned in said channel and fastener means for removably securing the said brackets to the said channel, and a half-section of an adjustable draw band secured to the lower'end of each of said brackets in opp'ositely disposed relation to one another and fasteners uniting the ends of the said draw bands.
