J. B. OLDERSHAW'.
CHIMNEY GOWL.
No. 483,619. Patented 001;. 4, 1892.

INVENTOR: a. (0M),

ATTORNEY.
l NllTED STATES PATENT QFFIQE,
JOHN B. OLDERSHAW, OF BALTIMOR ARYLAND.
CHIMNEY-COWL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 483,619, dated October 4, 1892.
Application filed March 25, 1892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. OLDERSHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore city, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney-Cowls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in stationary chimney-cowls, the object being to to provide a cowl which may be adjusted to fit different sizes of chimneys.
To this end the invention consists in the peculiar features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and I 5 claimed.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which'- Figure 1 shows a perspective view of the cowl. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section through the cowl and a chimney in which it is fitted. Fig. 3 shows a plan view of the cowl with the cap-plate removed. Fig. 4 shows a bottom View of the cap-plate. Fig. 5 shows a perspective view of one of the adjustable de- 2 5 fiector-plates.
In carrying out my invention I provide four corner-posts A to fit the four inside corners of the chimney. These corner posts or stan dards are all connected together near their lower ends by extensible slats B, each com posed of two overlapping parts, one of which has a slot at, which is engaged by a bolt a in the other part. m At a suitable point the cornor-posts have rest-pieces 12, secured to their 3 5 outer sides and arranged to seat upon the top of the chimney. The corner-posts support a pair of deflecting-frustums which are secured to them by means of suitable angle-clips 0. One of these frustums is arranged to have its 40 lower edge rest on the chimney, while the other frustum has position above it. Each frustum is made up of four corner-plates C, which over and under lap each other, as shown, and are connected by bolts cl in the overlapping plates, which bolts engage slots d in the nnderlapping plates. By this construction the frustums are rendered extensible. The corner-posts A extend through angular slots ein the cornerplates of the frustnms and project above the same. Horizontally-extending brackets D are secured to the upper ends of Serial No. 426,353. (No model.)
the posts A and have longitudinal slots f. A cap-p1ate or top covering E is supported by these brackets and has foot-pieces F, secured to its under side and upon which it stands.
These foot-pieces extend from side to side and have slots f at opposite ends. These slots extend transversely to those of the brackets D, and bolts f are passed through the crossing slots. It will be seen that with this construction the cowl may be extended or contracted to fit different-sized chimneys by slid ing the overlapping deflector-plates C and overlapping connecting-slats B past each other, and the parts may be locked by means of nuts 9 on the several securing-bolts.
My form of cowl obviates the necessity of a dealer keeping in stock a large number of different sizes of cowls, as this one form may be adjusted to suit any ordinary chimney.
It is evident more than two frustums may be used.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A chimney-cowl comprising corner-posts to fit the inside corners of the chimney and joined together by extensible connections and a suitable top covering supported by said posts.
2. A chimney-cowl comprising corner-posts to fit the inside corners of a chimney and joined together by extensible connections, deflector-plates supported by said posts, and a suitable top covering.
3. A chimney-cowl comprising corner-posts to lit the inside corners of a chimney and joined together by extensible slats, each consisting of two overlapping parts connected by means of a slot and bolt, and a suitable top covering.
at. A chimney cowl comprising corner-posts to fit the inside corners of the chimney and joined together by extensible connections, overlapping deflector-plates supported bysaid posts and connected together by means of slots and bolts, and a suitable top covering.
5. A chimney-cowl comprising corner-posts to fit the inside corners of a chimney and joined together by extensible connections, 100 said posts having horizontal slotted brackets at their upper ends, and a cap-plate having slotted foot-pieces resting on said brackets ner-plates connected together by means of 10 and connectedtherewith by bolts extending slots and bolts, and a suitable top covering. through the slots in the brackets and foot- In testimony whereof I affix my signature 1n pieces. the presence oftwo witnesses.
5 6. A chimney-cowl coniprisin corner-posts i f to fit the inside corners of a chimney and JOHN OLDERSHAW' joined together by extensible connections, de- Witnesses: fiector-frustums supported by said posts and H. L. DIERING,
