Application June 26,1947, seriamarsu'oi l i claim. (cris-132.5)
This invention relates to an adhesive coating machine for applying an even coating of adhesive to a flat surface.
An object of this invention is to provide a handcarried machine comprising a hollow housing having a storage chamber for adhesive, and a knurled adhesive distributing roller rotatably mounted in the storage chamber and extending partly through the housing below the lower surfaces of the machine, the lower surfaces on opposite sides of the roller being angularly positioned to rise away from the roller to prevent the lower edges of the housing from contacting the surface being coated'.
Another object of this invention is to make the lower wall of the machine to slope upwardly away from the roller to prevent the far edge of the lower wall from contacting the surface to which the adhesive is applied during operation of the machine.
Another object of this invention is to make the knurl elements of the roller of a size to scoop up adhesive in the storage chamber and deliver same in measured quantities on a surface on which the roller is applied.
With the above and other objectsA in view, the invention will be hereinafter more particularly described, and the combination and arrangement of parts will be shown in the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim which forms part of this specification.
Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which:
Figure 1 is an end view of the adhesive coating machine.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the machine shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view, the section being taken as on line 3--3 in Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of a scraper plate.
In the illustrated embodiment of the invention, the numeral I indicates a machine for applying an even coating of adhesive to a at surface. The coating machine I0 comprises a hollow body II of generally rectangular cross-section.
At one end ofthe body II is an opening I2 which may be closed by a cover I 3' pivotally mounted on a screw I4 and which may be suit ably locked by a screw I5. The cover` I3 provides access to a storage chamber I6.
Extending downwardly from the casing II below the lower wall I1 are flat surfaced flanges I8 which are positioned inconvergent angular relation. The flanges arein spaced-apart relation to provide a rectangular opening 2D.
Rotatably mounted in the opening 20 is a knurled adhesive distributing roller 2 I. 'I'he roller has pintles 22 suitably mounted in bearings 23 formed in side plates 24. The side plates are secured by screws 25 to the upright side walls of the easing. The side plates closely contactfand fully conceal the pintles 22 and seal the end faces of the roller.
Scraper plates 2'I each having a bevelled edge 28 are secured to the flanges I8 by screws 29 passing through transversely elongated apertures 3U in the scraper plates. The apertures permit the scraper plates to be slidably adjusted to and from the roller 2| to scrape excess adhesive from the roll-er and regulate the thickness of adhesive film carried out from the storage chamber I 6. As shown in Figures 1 and 3, it will be seen that the roller 2| is of uniform diameter throughout its length and is knurled throughout its length.
It will also be seen that both side plates 24 contact the side edges of both scraper plates 21 and thus maintain the alinement of the scraper plates, while permitting adjustment of the scraper plates to and from the roller 2 I.
The cavities 3l between the knurl elements of the roller 2I are made of a size to scoop up adhesive in the storage chamber I6 and deliver same in measured quantities on a surface on which the roller is applied.
'It is to be noted that the lower wall I1 is made to slope upwardly away from the roller a considerable height to prevent the far edge 32 of the wall I1 from contacting the surface to which the adhesive is applied during operation of the machine.
The -upper surface of the body I I has an elongated linear handle 3.3 which is positioned in right-angular relation with the front wall 34 of the body. This position of the handle facilitates the maintenance of the edge 32 in spaced relation above the surface worked upon.
In accordance with the patent statutes I have described and illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention, but it will be understood that various changes and modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim.
I claim:
A machine for applying an even and measured coating of adhesive to a. nat surface, comprising a hollow body having a closable inlet for storage of adhesive,'the lower surface of said body having converging anges formingr a rectangular Opening, a knurled adhesive distributing roller rotatably mounted in said opening with a minor portion of its periphery projecting below said iianges, side plates arranged to closely contact and seal the end faces of said roller, said roller being knurled throughout its length, two scraper plates slidably secured to said anges and having bevelled edges positioned" to contact oppositesides of the peripheryiof saidgrollenisaidi scraperpia-tes being adjustable to and from said roller to scrape excess adhesive and regulate the thickness of ad- ,y fr
hesive film carried out from said storage body 'by said roller, theknurl elements of said rollerfbef.` ing of a size to scoop up adhesive and deliver same in measured quantities on a'surfacefon-VVV which said roller is applied, the upperfsurfae oi said body having a linear handle positicnd ii'dr way lengthwise ofV said roller, the anges on.
opposite sides of said roller being angularly dis- 4 posed to rise away from said roller to prevent the lower edges of said body from contacting the surface being coated.
