PAINT APPLICATOR Filed Aug. 12, 1959 INVENTOR. MILES M. SOPOCY BY United States Patent PAINT APPLICATOR Miles M. Sopocy, 530 N. Park Plain, Park Ridge, Ill.
Filed Aug. 12, 1959, Ser. No. 833,295
3 Claims. (Cl. 15-166) This invention relates in general to paint applicators and more particularly to an applicator for precisely applying paint to marginal surfaces difficult to precisely cover with conventional brushes.
Prior to this invention the application of translucent coatings to the marginal areas of windows without contamination of the window frames required a high degree of skill and time. Similarly, the same difiiculty is present when applying paint to frames of windows without contamination of the glass. Similarly many other marginal paint applications are difiicult to perform without a high degree of professional skill.
The present invention overcomes the above objections and disadvantages by the provision of an applicator including a guiding means whereby marginal coatings on surfaces may be precisely and rapidly applied by relatively unskilled users and is the principal object of the invention.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a planar type brush having an offset handle and a rotary guide means in close proximity therewith for guiding the brush along marginal surfaces.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a cylindrical brush means having an ofiset handle including a guide disc pivoted for rotation about the principal axis of the brush on the reverse side thereof.
These and other objects and advantages in one embodiment of the invention are described and shown in the appended specification and drawing in which:
Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the applicator with a portion broken away.
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional side elevation taken through section line 2-2, Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the brush shown Fig. 1.
Figs. 4, 5 and 6 illustrate the position and use of the applicator in applying paint or other coatings to marginal surfaces.
Referring to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, a disc shaped body member 1 having a coaxial central boss 2 projecting from one side thereof includes an integral offset handle 3 and is preferably made from molded plastic material.
A circular brush 4 having relatively short bristles is secured by cementing to the lower surface of the body member 1, as shown.
A circular disc or wheel 5 is journalled for rotation on the body member 1 on the side opposite the brush and coaxial and parallel said brush. A stud 6 secured in boss 2 retains the disc 5 in position for rotation as shown. It is to be noted that the diameter of the wheel 5 is slightly larger than the diameter of the brush 4.
In operation and referring to Fig. 4, and assuming it is desired to paint a marginal portion of a window 7, the brush is first saturated with the desired paint material and placed against the surface desired covered with the wheel in rolling contact with the molding 8, as shown, and then by sliding the applicator in the direction shown by arrow the brush, guided by the wheel, will apply paint accurately at the edge of the glass forming a small head 9 at the junction of the molding without contaminating the latter, as further illustrated in Fig. 6.
It is now apparent that the applicator may be used for many other applications for precisely applying paint or other coatings on marginal surfaces such as surfaces adjacent to masonry as illustrated in Fig. 6.
It is understood that certain changes and modifications in construction utilizing the above described features are intended to come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. A paint applicator for coating marginal surfaces comprising a circular body member having a handle extending obliquely of the plane of the body member from one edge thereof, a substantially circular planar brush means secured to one side of said member, a guide wheel substantially the same diameter secured for rotation on the opposite side of said member and positioned in coaxial parallel spaced relation to the rear surface of said brush means.
2. A paint applicator for coating marginal surfaces comprising a circular disc having an integral handle extending obliquely of the plane of the circular disc from the edge thereof, a brush means having substantially uniform thickness secured to and covering one face of said disc, a guide wheel substantially the same diameter journalled for rotation on the opposite face of said disc substantially coaxial with and equispaced from said brush means.
3. A paint applicator for coating marginal surfaces comprising a main body member having a handle means extending obliquely of the plane of the body member from one edge thereof, substantially circular planar brush means of predetermined diameter secured to one side of said member, a guide wheel having a predetermined UNITED STATES PATENTS 1,988,024 Tilke Jan. 15, 1935 2,545,641 Allen et al.
