:IOHN E. ROSENTHAL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
DOOR-CHECK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 258,127, dated May 16, 1882.
Application filed February 15, 1862. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN E. ROSENTHAL, of the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Im provements in Door Checks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghadto theaccompanyingdrawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a view showing my door-check adapted to hold the door open. Fig. 2 is a view showing the check elevated to permit the door to be closed, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail perspective viewof my improved check.
This invention has relation to improvements in door-checks, havingfor its object to efiect the checking of the door at the instant of removing the hand from the knob after opening it; and itconsists of a pivoted cam-stop connected to and adapted to be operated by the turning of the door-knob, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, A indicates a door. Bis a segmental form of cam or stop, serrated or shod with rubber to cause it to impinge against the floor or readily take hold of the carpet. This cam is pivoted at the upper end of its arm I) to a bracket, 0, fast ened to the door near its lower edge. It is connected near its pivotal point by a rod, G, to an arm or lever, c, collared upon the knob-spindle. It will be noticed that as v the hand is freed from the knob, by the previous turning of which upon opening the door the check-cam B has been elevated, the cam will automatically drop and rest upon the floor or carpet, and any pressure-as, for instance, the wind, or the coming in contact therewith of playing children-exerted thereon will only cause the cam to bind with greater force upon the floor or carpet, and thus efi'ectually hold the door open as against being accidentally closed. V This check is applicable also to stove-doors. As the door-knob is not always at the same distance from the bottom of the door, where the check is applied, I prefer to make the rod 0 in two partsviz., an upper tubular part, screw-threaded on its inside, and alower threaded solid part-,which is screwed into the upper part. By this arrangement the rod may be lengthened or shortened at will, so as to be of the proper length to operate thcliinged shoe from the knob in the manner set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire tosecure by Letters Patent- The combination, with a door and its knobspindle, of the cam check or stop connected by a rod'and lover or arm to the knobspindle, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I havehereunto atfixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. ROSENTHAL.
