To all 'whom it may concern Beit known that I, WILLIAM MILL'EB, a citizen ot' the` United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county ot' Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Backs for Ranges, Stoves, Ste., ot which the following is a specication.

The object ot' my invention is to construct water-backs for ranges, stoves, etc., in such a manner as to enable said backs to support the panels or long centers ordinarily applied to the top plates of such cooking or heating apparatus. This result is accomplished by providing the upper part of the water-back with a liollon7 lateral extension of any suitable size and shape, said extension being either cast with the back or securely fastened thereto, and arranged to sustain the panels or long centers, as hereinafter more fully described, and set forth in the claims. y

In the annexed drawings, Figure lis a plan, showing my improvements applied to a tenliole range, a portion of one ot' the panels of the latter being broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged horizontal section of the central portion ofthe range, taken directly above the lateral extensions of the water-back. Fig. 3 is a vertical section ofthe range, taken in the plane ot' said extensions. A represents the top plate ot' a range or stove or other cooking or heating apparatus, said plate being provided with customaryldetachable panels or long centers, B, fitted with lids or covers O. When my improvements are applied to a range the upper surfaceof the two lateral extensions G J are practically in the same horizontal plane as the under side ofthe panels or long centers B. Consequently the center panels and the two contiguous panels are securely supported on said extensions, as seen in Figs. l and 3; but the panels at the extreme opposite ends ofthe range, not being subjected to avery intense heat, do not require the assistance ot' such extra supports. Evidently-the panels thus supported will not warp nor sag down 4in the center, neither will they be liable them. Furthermore, it is apparent that water circulatesY freely within the extensions Gr and J, thereby causing them to add to the heating capacity of thebaek, and enabling the range to furnish a greater quantity of hot water. I have described these extensions G J as'applied to w ater-backs composed ot' two communicating shells, through which the circulation takes place in the direction indicated by the arrow to crack when very heavy utensils are set npoii in Fig. 5; but the invention is not t0 be limited to any special form ot'hot-water apparatus, as it is evident said extensions may be arranged for use with backs composed of pipecoils or otherwise. In some cases these extensions need not come in direct contact with the under side of the panels 5 but the latter may have depending iianges or a series of lugs adapted to rest on top of said extensions; or detachable members may insonne cases be interposed between said panels and supports Gr J. Finally, where a supply of water cannot be obtained, the shells or other linings ot' the furnace may be traversed with a current of air,

so as to highly heat the latter and discharge;`

I am aware it is not new to support the-long centers or hot plates of ranges orsimilar cooking apparatus by a coil of water-pipes extendand communicating with the water-back proper and boiler of the range or stove; Further'- more,I am aware it is not new to supp'ortj'the'se long centers by means of water-chambers extending completely across from vthe front to the rear' of ranges, 85e., as" such devices' a'ie ,seen in severalv patents; but I know'of'- nolinstance where water-back linings have beenv provided with hollow lateral extensions ycapa-- yble of supporting` the longcen'teis :of: a stove or 1ange,and my claims are limited totliis construction of apparatus'.y
