4 Claims.
This invention relates to sinks, tubs and the like of the type having a drain pipe equipped with a stop valve and an overflow communicating with said drain pipe.
Heretofore the overflow pipe has been independently connected to the drain pipe below the drain valve therein, which necessitated additional fittings and adequate space. The principal object of the present invention is to eliminate these requirements by means of a novel arrangement wherein the overflow pipe is connected with the drain valveand an open overflow is provided through said valve in both open and closed positions thereof. Other objects are to provide for stopping the rotary plug of the drain valve in a positively closed, as well as a full drain, position and to provide a combinationdrain and overflow valve of simple,'economica1 and compact construction.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this invention and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur.
Fig. 1 is a side elevational view of a sink provided with a combination overflow and drain valve embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical fragmentary sectional view on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, showing the valve opened,
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2, showing the valve closed,
Fig. 4 is a vertical sectional view on the line 4-4 in Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of the closed valve, Q
Fig. 6 is a side elevational view of the rotary valve plug; and
Fig. 7 is an end elevational view of the open end of said valve plug.
In the accompanying drawings, my invention is illustrated in connection with a sink I having a pipe 2 leading downwardly outside thereof from an overflow opening 3 in the upper position of one side thereof. The bottom of the sink I has a drain opening therein defined by an annular flange 4 which slopes downwardly towards said opening. The sink is provided with a drain or waste pipe 5 communicating with said drain opening through a combination drain and overflow valve comprising a casing 6 having a passageway 1 that extends vertically therethrough and has an enlarged counterbored, internally threaded upper end portion 8 and a lower end portion 9 which is internally threaded to receive the drain pipe 5 and is externally threaded to re ceive a larger drain pipe (not shown).
The upper end 8 of the valve casing 6 is beveled in conformity with the conical flange 4 that de fines the drain opening in the bottom of the sink I and said end is clamped to the underside of said flange by a ring to which is threaded into the enlarged upper end 8 of the passageway I and which has an outstanding rim flange I I whose I underside is beveled in conformity with said sink flange 4 and seats on the upper surface thereof. A' washer I2 is interposed between the sink flange 4 and the beveled upper end of the valve casing 6 to prevent leakage. A flat strainer disk I3 seats in the ring I6 flush with the top thereof and is secured thereto by screws I4.
The valve casing 6 has a cross-bore I5 which extends therethrough intermediate between the upper and lowerends thereof and is enlarged where it intersects the vertical passageway I to form cylindrical valve seat I6. Extending into the cross-bore I5 of the casing 6 from one side thereof is a valve stem I1 which terminates at its inner end in a cylindrical valve member I8 that is journaled for rotation in the cylindrical valve seat I6. The lower end of the overflow pipe 2 is connected to the cross-bore I5 on the other side of the valve casing 6. The rotary cylindrical valve member I8 is provided with a diametral passageway I9, which extends therethrough from side to side of the vertical passageway I in the valve casing, a radial port 20 leading from said diametral passageway and opening throughone side of said valve member, and an end port 2I in continuous communication with said diametral passageway and the end of the cross-bore I5 which communicates with the lower end of the I way I9 thereof is in line with the vertical passageway I in the valve casing 6 and thus permits water to drain from the sink I into the drain pipe 5 and the overflow water to drain through the axial end port 2I and diametral passageway into the vertical passageway and thence into the drain pipe. In the closed position of the valve member I8, the diametral passageway I9 is disposed crosswise of the vertical passageway -I thereby cutting off communication between the sink and drain pipe 5, but the side port 20 opens downwardly into the drain pipe and thus permits the overflow water to flow through the end port 2I, thence into said diametral passageway and thence through said side port into said drain pipe.
As shown in Fig. 4, the cylindrical valve member I8 is held in the valve seat I6 by means of a retainer nut 22, with its packing 23 and the sealing nut 24. For remote rotary manipulation, the valve stem I! may be connected with an actuating rod 25 having a socket portion 26 adapted to receive the outer end of the valve stem which is rigidly held thereon by a set screw 21. Another screw 28 is threaded through the socket portion 26 into the valve stem I1 and is of suflicient length so that when said valve stemiisturnedtoeither valve;,0pening or closing position the stop screw 28 will contact a stop pin 29 or a stop pin 30 fixed to the valve casing 6 one on each side of the valve stem and limit the turningroi the rotary yalve member to a drain shut off position or to a-full drain position, and also assure-iulkcommunication between the overflowpipe, 2 andthe dr-ainn establishing; and cutting; off; dra inage; from said sink through said drain pipe andlformmaintaining communication between said overflow and s ;drain pipes through said valve in all positions of cured 'to said ring substantially flush with the rw lt ereo 3; a nk having overflow pipe, a drain pipe -anzi astoprvalve for said drain pipe, the improvement which gonsists in providing said valve with a rotary cylindrical valve member for establishijzaln g and cutting ofi drainage from said sink through said drain pipe and for maintaining rass d ect y t h h ss p s a ein he drai pipe 5- T s a t a c oft e. ov r- 0 is ev dis rbe ,T e penla drql s -,;positions, of the valve are positively ,determined v y: t e st p P 15 9. a T e d r t; (29. 11 tion of the overflow pipe 2 with the valveand the oss bi i v nne n, ieaou l t of thedrain' valve to the drain pipe makes it pos- .sib1eo use a m n m m m e f par s [a d a minimum amount oi materials and cost.
