This invention relates to a novel construction of container and applicator for lipsticks and more particularly has reference to an improved construction of cap adapted to be mounted upon conventional lipstick container bodies including applicating means for smoothly applying the lipstick.

Still another object of the invention is to provide a container and applicator including a cover adapted to replace conventional lipstick covers and for substantially enclosing a lipstick containingrbarrel or body and which is capable of being interchangeably applied to conventional lipstick barrels or bodies so thatthe container andapplicator can be used with a number of lipsticks and need not be disposed of when a lipstick with which it has been employed is con-' sumed.

Various other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter become more fully apparent from the following description of the drawing, illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof, and wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing the lipstick container and applicator applied to a conventional lipstick containing body or barrel;

Figure 2 is a cross sectional view thereof taken substantially along a plane as indicated by the line 2-2 of Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a central longitudinal sectional view of one part of the container, applicator combination;

Figure 4 is a similar view of another part thereof, and

Figure 5 is a side elevational view of a conventional lipstick containing body or barrel and which is provided with a conventional feed means.

Referring more specifically to the drawing, a conventional barrel or container body 6 for a lipstick T is illustrated in Figure 5. The barrel or body 6 is of the type provided with a swivelly mounted lower end 8 which is part of an inner sleeve 9 of the barrel 6 and which contains a conventional base or follower, not shown, having a lug I0 projecting outwardly through a slot II in the sleeve 9 and through a longitudinally extending curved slot I2 in the barrel 6 and by means of which the follower or base and its lug II) will be moved longitudinally of the barrel 6 when the swivelly disposed end or knob 8 is revolved for turning the sleeve 9 within the barrel 6. This movement of the lug I0 and its follower longitudinally of the barrel 6 will cause the lipstick I to be either projected outwardly from the 2 upper, open end of the barrel 6 or to be retracted therein. The parts previously described are all of conventional construction and it is to be understood that they illustrate only one conventional type of lipstick holder and that other types, suchas those employing a sliding push bottom, may be utilized with the improved container and applicator, designated generally I3 and comprising the invention.

The container and applicator I3, as seen assembled in Figure 1 includes a lower section, designated generally I4, as seen in Figured, and an upper section or cap, designated generally I5, and shown in Figure 3. The section It comprises a tubular body It having an open end I! adapted to receive the open end of the barrel 6. The opposite end of the tube I6 terminates in a substantially closed end I8 which is of ogive shape.

The tube It is provided with a restricted portion I9 adjacent the ogive shaped closed end I8 thereof and which merges therewith. Said restricted portion I9 is provided with spaced, substantially parallel longitudinal slits to provide a portion 20 therebetween which is pressed outwardly to form a yieldable detent for the cap I5, as will hereinafter become apparent. A concave-convex disc forming a partition 2i is secured in any suitable manner in the outer part of the restricted portion I9 and is bowed in a direction into the interior of the closed end IS. A sheath or brush base 22 is disposed within the chamber 23 formed by the portions 2t and I8; said sheath or base 22 having an annular flared end 24 which is suitably secured to the convex side of the partition 2|, and an opposite restricted end 25 in which corresponding ends of a set of bristles forming a brush 2% are anchored. The bristles 26 extend outwardly through a restricted opening 27 in the apex of the closed end I8 which is shaped to closely engage therearound and for maintaining the shape or contour of the portion of the brush 26 which. protrudes outwardly therefrom. The restricted end 25 of the sheath 22 terminates inwardly of the opening 21 and the brush 25 may be clamped sufiiciently tight in the opening 2'! so as to afford means for retaining the partition 26 in its position of Figure 4 without otherwise securing said partition in the restricted portion I9 of the tube I6.

The upper section or cap I5 is likewise tubular in cross section and of substantially the same internal and external diameter as the tube I6 and is provided with an open end 28 and an opposite closed end 29 which is bowed outwardly. The open end 28 is adapted to be fitted over the restricted portion [9 which is stepped inwardly sufiiciently so that when the cap I is applied it will form a substantially uninterrupted continuation of the tube [6. The resilient detent will yieldably bear against a portion of the inner surface of the cap I5 for frictionally retaining it in an applied position. The cap [5 is of suificient depth so that when fully applied, as seen in Figure 1, the brush 26 will not be engaged and distorted by the closed end 29 thereof.

From the foregoing it will be readily obvious that the tube I6 with the cap l5 applied is adapted to receive the barrel 6 which will be positioned therein as illustrated in dotted lines in Figure 1. With the parts thus assembled as in Figure 1, the lipstick and brush are conveniently housed or enclosed so as to be carried or stored in a conventional manner, as for example in a handbag. To employ the lipstick, the barrel 6 is removed in a conventional manner from the tube l6 and the knurled knob 6 is revolved for exposing or further exposing the outer end of the lipstick I which can then be applied in a conventional manner. The cap I5 is then removed and the tube I6, either with the barrel 6 replaced therein or detached therefrom, is then employed as a handle for the brush 26 for evenly and smoothly spreading and shaping the lipstick to the lips, thus preventing soiling of the fingers and insuring a more even and accurate application of the paste. Obviously, if desired, the brush 26 could also be employed for daubing the paste from the stick 1, preparatory to applying it to the lips. The cap I5 is then re-applied, as seen in Figure 1, to maintain the brush 26 in a sanitary condition and free from foreign matter. The brush 26 may be washed or cream cleaned and is intended to be formed of bristles of sable, nylon, porcine or other suitable and desirable material which will be relatively soft yet suificiently firm and durable for its intended purpose and which will withstand an almost indefinite use so that the unit l3 may be utilized with a plurality of lipsticks I.

Various modifications and changes are contemplated and may obviously be resorted to, without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter defined by the appended claim.

I claim as my invention:

A lipstick container closure and lipstick applicator comprising an elongated tubular closure having an outer end provided with a restricted opening, a solid partition secured in the tubular closure adjacent said outer end and sealing off said outer end from the remainder of the tubular closure, and an applicator having a base disposed in the tubular closure between the partition and said outer end and secured to the partition, said applicator including a set of bristles having one end anchored in the base and an intermediate portionpclamped in said restricted opening, the opposite end of the set of bristles projecting outwardly from the outer end of the tubular closure, and said tubular closure forming an applicator handle.
