Description

Dec. 25, 1951 A, GORDON 2,579,490
FACE POWDER BOX Filed, June 15, 1948 FIG. i.
l6 l5 /9 a f 2 1 \F/G. 2 E 22 INVENTOR.
AosAL/g 4. aoeoo/v,
Patented Dec. 25, 1951 UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE FACE POWDER Box Rosalie A. Gordon, Indianapolis, Ind. Application June 15, 1948 Serial No. 33,009 1 Claim. (01. 229 51) My invention relates to face powder boxes for bulk face powder, and more particularly to that type of box which comprises a container for the powder which is sealed therein prior-to use by means of an inner cover comprising a body of sheet material. In practice, such sheet material usually comprises a cellulose product, such as thin paper, which is readily frangible. In such powder boxes the seal prevents loss of powder prior to its sale and up until the time it is ready to be used by the purchaser. Thereafter, the user tears a hole in the paper, whereby to get access to the contents of the container. However, it i difficult to tear a hole the proper size in such inner cover, and if a small sized dispensing opening is formed initially, it is necessary to steadily increase the size of the opening as the contents of the container or box are dispensed.
With the foregoing in view, it is an object of my invention to provide an improved face powder box including means for readily forming dispensing openings of progressively increased size in the cover.
A further object is to provide an improved face powder box such as that last described, wherein the means for forming the dispensing openings comprises at least two score lines formed on the inner cover, one of said score lines comprising an inner score line which is at least partially closed and defines a relatively small dispensing opening, and the other of which score line at least partially surrounds said first-named score line and defines a dispensing opening of relatively large size.
Other objects and advantages reside in the particular structure of the invention, combination and arrangement of the several parts thereof, and will be readily understood by those skilled in the art upon reference to the annexed drawing in connection with the following specification, wherein the invention is shown, described and claimed.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a face powder box according to the invention, showing the same in sealed condition;
Figure 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken substantially on the plane of the line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figures 3 to 6, inclusive, are plan views of the device according to the invention on reduced scales and showing dispensing openings of various sizes formed in the cover.
Referring specifically to the drawing, wherein like reference characters have been used throughout the several views to designate like parts, I0 designates generally any suitable face powder box including a closed bottom II and a side wall I2. The upper edges of the side wall I2 are connected by an inner cover I3 which in practice comprises a body of sheet material, such as paper or other readily frangible cellulose material. Although not shown, it is understood that the box I0 is normally provided with an outer cover telescopically fitting over the container side wall I2 in a well known manner. Although the box I0 is shown as being cylindrical, it is understood that the same may assume other shapes.
The inner cover I3 is formed with a plurality of at least partially closed score lines thereon, each of which at least partially defines a readily severable cover portion defining a dispensing opening of a difierent size. In the form shown. the score lines are concentric circles disposed concentrically of the cover I3. However, it is obvious that the score lines may not be entirely closed, need not be circles, and need not be concentric. Thus, the disclosure of the drawing should be considered as illustrative rather than limitative.
In the particular embodiment shown by way of an example, there are score lines I4, I5, I6
, and Il concentrically disposed and providing a partial severance of cover portions of the cover I3. At the same time, it is understood that the score lines do not entirely penetrate the inner cover I3 whereby the powder contained in the container III is sealed in the same. The score line I4 is innermost and defines a readily severable cover portion I8 of circular form. The remaining score lines I5, I6 and I1 define respectively concentric annularly-shaped cover portions I9, 20 and 2i, respectively, which define readily severable cover portions for openings of greater size. The outermost score line I1 is radially inwardly disposed relative to the side wall I2 of the box I0, whereby to provide an inwardly-directed ledge 22 which aids materially in maintaining loose powder in the box when the contents are almost entirely dispensed. As is apparent from Figures 3 t 6, inclusive, with the innermost cover portion I8 removed, an opening 23 is provided, and as the remaining cover portions I9, 20 and 2I are removed, openings 24, 25 and 26 are provided. Thus, as the powder is dispensed from the box, the size of the opening maybe readily increased.
Thus, while I have shown and described what is now thought to be a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible-of other forms and expressions.
Consequently, I do not limit myself to the precise structure shown and described hereinabove except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:
A container comprising a cylindrical shaped receptacle open at one end adapted to contain powder, and a cover made of frangible material positioned adjacent the open end of said receptacle and 'having the edge thereo'fsextendingi-into the open-end of'and secured to the adjacent portion of the wall of said receptacle closing said receptacle, said cover being provided with a plurality of concentric endless score lines arranged in spaced parallel relation inwardly from the bounding edge thereof, the longitudinal axisnf said cylindrical receptacle pass n through the common center of said concentric scorelines.
