This invention relates to improvements in containers and-more part1cularly,'1n some of its aspects, to containers usually made of paper, cardboard, or similar materials and adapted for containing various substances, particularly finely divided substances such as toilet or talcum powders.
It is a general object of the invention to provide an improved container of the class mentioned which is simple in structure and inexpensive in manufacturing cost and well adapted for containing the materials both during shipment and during the period of use thereof.
A more particular object of the invention is to provide a container of the class mentioned having an improved sifter arrangement whereby the contents may be readily dispensed for use thereof.-
Still another object is to provide a container having animpro-ved sifter arrange ment and an improved arrangement of a frangible seal for preventing scattering of the contents during shipment or handling,
Another object is to provide a'sifter container of the class mentioned having an improved'closure whereby the contents may be dispensed in large or smallamounts as desired. H a .A further object is to provide a container of the class mentioned with an improved arrangement for facilitating movement of the cover to opening and closing positions and Other objects will be in part, pointed out in the following detailed description of an illustrative but preferred embodiment of the invention and will be :in part [obvious in no connection therewith.
The invention accordingly comprises the features of construction,combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts, which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter set forth and the scope of the-application of which will be indicated in the claims.

nature and objects of the invention, refertion of the exemplary embodiment and to the accompanying drawing, in which:

Referring to the drawing for a-detailed description of the embodiment of the inven tion there shown, the container or box includes a body part 5 and a cover part 6 which telescopes over the part 5. When the cover is telescoped'over the box 5, the lower edgeof the cover may: contact with or lie in proximity to the peripheral annular flange 7 projecting from the base of the box. The cover 6 may be of ordinary tubular construction' havingan outwardly 'convexed head 8 and of any preferred ornamental design, an d need not be further described herein.
The walls of the box or body part '5 may be made up, as shown, of a pluralityof con- 'ceritrically arranged or telescoping shells bottom plate 12 is seated, as shown,:against the lower ends-of the shells 9 and 11 and is provided with a filling opening 13. Underlying the bottom plate-l2 is a second bottom platel l extended at its outer edge to'provide the annular flange 7 and having, also, an opening registering with the opening 13 but slightly larger in diameter, so as to provide a seat for a closure disk '15, as shown in Fig. 1. The box may thus be filled through the bottom opening 13 and the sealing disk afterwards placed in position to close and seal the box in a manner known in the art. 7

and is provided with dispensing or sifting openings through which the powder or other contents may be removed. In the form shown there are two such sifter openings, one of small capacity provided by a group of small holes 17 and one of larger capacity provided by a single large hole 18. These sifter openings, as shown, are disposed eccentrically with reference to the head 16 which, in the form shown, is circular.
Overlying the sifter head 16 is a cover 19 normally positioned closely against the head 16 and being provided with a discharge opening 20. The cover 19 is mounted for rotary movement and the opening 20 is eccentrically disposed so as to be registered selectivelywiththe sifter openings 17 and 18 I r The outer shell 10 of the box projects at its upper end beyond the inner shells 9 and 11 and is crimped or rolled to provide a bead or rib 21. This bead extends inwardly, radially from the outer surface of the box so as to overlie the outer edge of the cover 19, thus retaining the latter in operative position. The'cover 19' is thus rotatable in the channel or groove 22 provided between the retaining head 21 and the upper edges of the inner shells 9 and 11'. By this means the cover 19 may be rotated with referenceto the sifter head 16, thus bringing the discharge opening 20 intoalignment either with sifter opening 17 or 18, permitting the contents to be sifted. When the discharge opening 20 is moved out of alignment with the sifter openings, as shown in Fig. 2, an effectual seal for thebox is provided. Opening 20forms a handle for rotating the cover.
In. order to provide a seal for the sifter openings 17 and, 18 during shipment or handling, asealing member 23 may be provided. This sealing member is shown in the form of a sheet of thin paper, or similar frangible material and is preferably interposed between the sifter head 16 andthe movable cover 19. Inthe form shown the frangible seal 23 extends continuously over' the sifter head 16 and is cemented at its edges, as at 24,;to an angular strip of paper 25. Both the strip 25 and the seal 23 are pasted or cemented all the way around'the box. This provides a. seal preventing the escape of the powder around the edges of the head 16 and also binds the latter inoperative position. An effective seal. is also provided to prevent escape of the powder through the sifter openings. lVhen it is desired to open the box 'foruse, the frangible sealing member 23 will be broken adjacent the sifter openings 17 and 18, as by cutting or by the insertion of a pointed instrument. i e Due to, the factthat the seal 23 is made of tissue paper or similar smooth material, this member provides an anti-friction disk or water between the'head and the movable cover 19. Binding action impeding movement of the cover is thus avoided.
The outer and intermediate shell members '10 and 11 may be cemented together and ventsthe fine material from sifting between the shells and thus escaping from the box. A finishing strip 27, of any preferred ornamental design and quality of paper, may be cemented over the outer surface of the box part 5 and a similar finishing strip 28 may be cemented to the: bottom, .as. shown. i
It will be understood that'the drawing shows the different parts of'the box, such as the shells 9, 10, 11, and the head 16 and cover 19, slightly separated from normal positions thereof in order to more clearly disclose the structure. The drawing is, to this extent, diagrammatic. t
Since certain changes may bemade in the above construction and 'difi'erentembodiments of the invention could be made without departing from-the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing 'shall'be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also tobeunderstood that 'the following claims are intended to cover all of the generic and Specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention which, as a matter of language, might be said'to fall therebetween.
Having described myinvention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is I 1. In a container,- in combination, a shell crimped to provide a retaining bead, a sifter head and a movable cover for said head retained in position by said bead, and a frangible seal for said sifter head, said cover being mounted for movement upon said frangible seal. r V
2. In a-container, in combination, a shell crimped to provide a retaining head, a sifter head and a movable cover for said head retained in position by said bead and a frangible tissue seal for said sifter head interposed between the latter and said movable cover.
3. In a container, in combination, a shell, a sifter head for said shell, a cover for said head mounted for movement relatively thereto, said head having sifter openings ofdif ferent capacity and said cover having a discharge openingadapted to selectively align with said sifter-openings upon movement of said cover, and a frangible tissue seal for said sifter openings interposed between said head and said movable cover. 5. In a container, in combination, a shell, a sifter head for said shell, a cover for said head mounted for movement relatively thereto, said head having sifter openings of different capacity and said cover having a discharge opening adapted to selectively align with said sifter openings upon movement of said cover, and an anti-friction wafer interposed between said sifter head and said cover, said wafer overlapping said sifter openings and providing a frangible seal therefor.
6. In a container, in combination, a shell, a sifter head for said shell, a movable cover for said head mounted for movement relatively thereto, and an anti-friction wafer interposed between said sifter head and said cover, said wafer being cemented to the sifter head to provide a frangible seal for the latter.
7. In a container, in combination, a sifter head, a cover for said head mounted for sliding movement over the latter and having a discharge passageway, and a frangible seal ing sheet interposed between said head and said cover upon which the latter slides.
8. In a container, in combination, a sifter head, a cover for said head having a discharge passageway, means for retaining the cover permanently on the container for movement thereon into opening and closing positions, and a frangible sealing sheet interposed between said head and said movable cover, and contacting with said movable cover and forming an anti-friction device therefor.
9. In a container, in combination, a sifter head, a slidable cover for said head having a discharge passageway, a frangible sealing sheet interposed between said head and said slidable cover and contacting with the latter, and means for retaining said cover for rotary sliding movement upon said sealing sheet into opening and closing positions.
