COMBINATION CRIB AND CRADLE Filed 001;. 21, 1949 Attorney Patented Dec. 11, 1951 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE COMBINATION CRIB AND CRADLE William Pope, New Orleans, La.
Application October 21, 1949, Serial No. 122,790
6 Claims. 1
The present invention relates to a combination crib and cradle and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts herein described and claimed.
Generally there is provided a combination crib and cradle which comprises a pair of rocker members having upwardly extending centrally disposed arms interconnected at their upper ends to form an axle upon which is suspended a crib. A pair of vertically movable legs is mounted upon each of the rocker members and each of the pairs of legs is provided with an upwardly extending shaft which is provided with an integrally formed inwardly extending abutment which is adapted to engage in a notch at the side of the crib to lock the same when the shaft is lowered. When the shaft is in upraised position the bottoms of the rockers are free to contact the floor and the device may be rocked back and forth in the manner of an ordinary cradle but with the exception that the crib, being suspended, will remain level with the floor at all times. When the shaft is in lowered position, the crib is locked with the upright members and the rollers are in contact with the floor. The device then forms a rigid structure which may be moved from place to place by means of the rollers. With slight alterations, the device may be utilized as a swing.
It is accordingly an object of the invention to provide a device of the character set forth which is simple in construction and operation and which is effective and eilicient in use.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a combination baby crib and cradle.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a novel locking means whereby a crib may be locked with other apparatus forming a part of the invention to provide a rigid structure.
A further object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel retractable supporting rollers.
A further object of the invention is the provision, in a device of the character set forth, of novel supporting means for the swinging supports of a crib forming a part of the invention.
Other and further objects of the invention will become apparent from a reading of the following specification taken in conjunction with the drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of an embodiment of the invention,
Figure 2 is an end elevational view thereof,
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken along line 33 of Figure 2,
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken along line 4-4 of Figure 1, and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view illustrating certain details of construction.
Referring more particularly to the drawing,
there is shown therein a pair of spaced parallel rockers it each provided with a centrally disposed upwardly extending support Il having a longitudinal opening I2 therein.
An axle is is provided with integrally formed downwardly extending legs 14 which are embedded in the upper ends of the support members H, as indicated at IS.
The lower ends of the rockers H) are interconnected by means of a transversely extending cross bar it and an abutment I! is disposed in spaced relation above the bar it on the inner side of each of the rockers l0.
Mounted for vertical reciprocal movement on the inner face of each of the rockers In between the bar 56 and the abutment i1 is an arcuate roller support I9 having its concave face presented toward the floor and provided, in each case, with a roller 26 at each of its outer ends.
A block 2| is mounted in the opening 12 in each of the members ll adjacent the upper end of said opening and a shaft 22 is slidably mounted in the block and extends vertically in the opening l2 and inwardly, as indicated at 23 and thence downwardly through the abutment H and is fastened within the support II by means of a set screw 24. A set screw 25 is provided in the block 2! whereby to loci: the shaft 22 in either its upward or its lowered positions and the upper end of the shaft 22 is provided with an inwardly extending integrally formed latch member 26 which is adapted to engage in a notch- 21 formed in the side of a crib 28. The crib 28 is provided with a pair of eyes 29 in either side thereof and each is adapted to receive one end of a supporting cable 3E9 which is looped, as indicated at 3|, through a ring 32 which is, in turn, connected with a ring 33 which surrounds the" axle [3.
In operation, it will be apparent that when the shaft 22 is moved upwardly that the support member It will likewise be moved upwardly and that the rollers 20 will be freed from contact with the floor whereupon the rockers II] will be free to rock and that at the same time the member 25 will be free from its notch 2! whereby the crib 28 may be free to swing upon the axle l3 and that as the device is rocked upon the rockers the crib 28 will, through gravity, maintain a substantially parallel position with the floor at all times.
When it is desired to utilize the device as an ordinary crib, however, the shafts 22 are moved downwardly whereupon the members 26 will engage in the notches 2'! and the rollers 20 will come into contact with the floor and the rockers 10 will be raised from the floor. The device in such condition will be rigid and may be moved from place to place upon the rollers 20 in much the same manner as the ordinary crib. It will also be apparent that the shaft 22 may be locked in either its upward position or in its downward position, as above set forth, by means of the set screws 25.
While but one form of the invention has been shown and described herein, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that many minor modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
