CRIB OR CRADLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 13, 1917.
Application filed May 24, 1916. Serial No. 99,581.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, CALVIN F. CrIRIsTo- II-IER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Haywood and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and useful Crib or Cradle, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to cribs and cradles, and aims to provide novel and improved yet simple and effective means for mounting a crib, cradle, bed or hammock for swinging and vertical movementsf It is also the object of the invention to provide a device of the nature indicated which is improved generally in its construction and details, to enhance the utility thereof.
WVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, portions being brok n away.
Fig. 3 is an end view, portions being broken away.
In the drawings, there is delineated a crib or cradle proper, designated 1,,which may be of any suitable construction. This crib is is supported between a pair of standards 2 adjacent the ends of the crib, and said standards each embody the vertical parallel bars 8 having their lower ends attached to a foot piece 41: mounted on casters 5, which permit the crib to be readily moved about from place to place. The foot pieces 4 at the opposite ends are connected by longitudinal stay or tie rods 7, whereby the standards are connected to provide the crib supporting frame. Attached to the upper ends of each pair of bars 3 is a head 8, and the heads of the two standards are provided with upper notches 9 forming seats for outstanding fulcrum elements 10 of plates or castings 11 which are bolted or otherwise secured upon the upper edges of transverse levers 12. Said plates 11 are arranged intermediate the ends of the rocking levers 12, and the opposite arms of the levers are yieldably connected to the ends of the crib by means of coiled retractile springs 13, which yielda'bly suspend the crib from the levers.
In order to effect the swinging movement of the crib with the levers, yet to permit the up and down movement of the crib, upstanding guide rods let are attached to the ends of the crib and pass loosely through apertures with which the arms of the levers 12 are provided, and said rods 14; are provided withknobs 16 at their upper ends, to limit the downward movement of the crib l by the contact of said knobs with the levers 12. The rods 1 1 guide the crib 1 for movement toward and away from the levers 12, and hold said crib substantially parallel with the levers whereby when the levers are oscillated, the crib will be swung sidewise. The levers 12 by their sliding engagement with the rods 1 1 are maintained 1n proper position adjacent to the heads 8 of the standards, with the knife edges 10 resting in the notches 9.
The crib can be swung in any suitable manner, and as a convenient means for doing this, a treadle 17 can be fulcrumed to one of the foot pieces 4, preferably upon one of the protruding ends of one stay rod 7, and the free end of said treadle 17 is connected by a rod or link 18 with one arm of the corresponding lever 12. Thus, by depressing the treadle 17 by the foot, the lovers will be oscillated for swinging the crib.
hen the swinging movement of the crib is not wanted, it is prevented by means of detents or holding members 19 disposed between and pivotally' connected with the bars 3 of the standards, and swingable into engagement with certain vertical fillers 20 of the crib l, to prevent the sidewise movement of the crib, but yet to permit the vertical movement of the crib. These detents 19 when swung downwardly permit the crib to move sidewise and vertically without restriction, but when the detents 19 are swung upwardly into engagement with the re spective fillers 20, this permits of only the vertical movement of the crib by the expansion and contraction of the springs 13. The castings or members 11 are provided with upstanding slotted lugs 21 adapted to receive the terminals of a longitudinal rod 22 disposed above the crib, and loose elements 23 of paper, fiber, or any other suitable material, can be hung from the rod 22 and are preferably attached thereto, to pro- "ide a fly scare, to prevent flies or other insects from bothering the infant. -The rod 22 can be readily applied to and removed from the lugs 21, and when the levers 12 are oscillated, said rod 22 will be given a,
slight movemnt in a direction opposite to the direction in which the crib 1 is moved. The fly scare is thus given a swinging movement relative to the crib in addition to the swinging movement of the crib under the fly scare.
From the "foregoing, the advantages and attributes of the invention are apparent without further comment being neccessary.
Although the i vention is illustrated and described as being for a crib or cradle, it will be understood that the same can be used for a bed, hammock, or the like.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. In a device of the character described, levers, a crib, spring means suspending said crib from the levers, and means connecting the crib and levers for constraining the crib for movement toward and away from the levers and for swinging movement with the levers.
2. In a device of the character described, levers, a crib, spring means suspending said crib from the levers, and means for constraining the crib to swing with the levers embodying guide rods attached to one of them and slidable through the other.
3. A device of the character described embodying a frame having standards, levers fulcrumed-- between their ends upon said standards, a crib between the standards,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for springs suspending the crib from said levers, and cooperating means carried by the frame and crib for preventing the swinging movement of the crib.
4. A device of: the character described embodying a frame having standards, levers fulcrumed between their ends upon said standards, a crib between the standards, springs suspending the crib from said levers, and upstanding guide rods attached to the crib and slidable through the levers.
5. A device of the character described embodying a frame having standards, levers fulcrumed between their ends upon said standards, a crib between the standards, springs suspending the crib from said levers, upstanding guide rods attached to the crib and slidable through the levers, and cooperatin means carried by the crib and standards for preventing the swinging movement of the crib.
6. A device of the character described embodying a frame having standards provided at their upper ends with seats, levers provided between their ends with fulcrum elements seated in said seats and upstanding slotted lugs, a crib between the standards, springs connecting said levers and crib, upstanding guide rods carried by the crib and slidable through the levers, and a rod terminally engageable with said slotted lugs and having depending loose elements providing a fly scare.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
