At its opposite longitudinal edge, the platen I is providedi-with a down-turned longitudinal flange ll telescoping within the adjacent casing side wall !2. These down-turned longitudinal flanges reinforce and stiffen the platen, and the flange ll forms a holding device for holding the platen in normal closed position and cooperates with a spring latch l8 engaging in a depression in the flange. The fiat writing surface of the platen I5 is depressed slightly below the upper horizontal surface of the casing, as best shown in Fig. 7, providing a firm flat surface in which the record unit being inscribed is supported and held steady in writing position.
Positioned within the support or casing near the forward end thereof is a supporting or binding device for the record supply including upright binding posts I9 adapted to enter apertures in the forward ends of the record units for holding the record supply in position on the casing or support. The binding device for the record units is positioned at the forward end of the casing beneath the top end plate l4 and includes a frame plate 20 having upper and lower supporting flanges 2| engaging the inner surfaces of the upper and lower casing walls. The frame plate 20 of the binding device is firmly secured in position within the casing by means of mounting screws 22 engaging the forward end plate of the casing and threaded into supporting lugs 23 welded or otherwise firmly attached to the frame plate.
Mounted for longitudinal movement within the casing and supported by the frame plate 20, is a supporting carriage 24 to which the binding posts l9 are firmly attached for movement therewith as best shown in Figs 3, 4 and 5. This supporting carriage has a lower plate 25 slidably engaging the lower casing wall, and a forwardly disposed upper plate 26 substantially parallel with the lower plate 25, and extending between the upper and lower carriage plates is a vertical plate 21. Horizontal tubular supports and guides 28 are firmly attached to the frame plate 20 and extend rearwardly thereof. Each of the tubular supports '28 telescopically receives a guide rod 29 firmly attached at its outer end to the vertical plate 21 of the supporting carriage, thus providing a supporting and guiding means for the supporting carriage.
An actuator or actuator plate 38 is positioned just beneath the upper plate 26 of the supporting carriage, being attached or integral at its forward edge to a supporting plate 3| which is mounted for transverse sliding movement on the rear side of the frame plate 26. The supporting plate 3| is attached to the frame plate 26 by means of an attaching member or bar 32 connected at its inner end as by riveting or welding to the supporting plate 3| and extending outwardly through the frame plate in an elongated transverse slot 33. The attaching bar 32 is continued outside of the elongated slot 33 into an opening or transversely elongated slot in the forward end of the casing to form an operating handle 34 for manual control of the binding device as later more fully described. A retaining washer or collar is secured on the attaching bar 32 at the outside of the frame plate 20. Thus the actuator plate 30 may be reciprocated transversely by means of the handle 34. e A
Mounted upon the upper side of the actuator plate 30 are two cam rollers 36 respectively engaging in inclined cam slots 31 in the upper carriage plate 26 which are inclined to the axis of longitudinal movement of the supporting carriage 24. Opposite end portions of these cam slots are formed with divergent pockets 38 in which the cam rollers 36 rest at extremities of movement of the carriage in either direction. A spring latch in the form of a spring plate 39 is attached at one extremity at 39 to the lower surface of the actuator plate 30 having a latch lug 40 at its opposite extremity extending through an aperture in the actuator plate and slidably engaging with the adjacent surface of the upper carriage plate 26. When the carriage reaches its extreme retracted position, the latch lug 40 automatically engages by spring pressure in the latch opening 4| in the plate 26 -thus holding the carriage in its retracted position. The latch lug 40 is rounded at its engaging part so as to be disengaged by application of pressure on the operating parts.
As best seen in Fig. 3, a retaining spring plate 42 is attached to the upper flange 2| of the frame plate 20 extending transversely of the register and contacting with the upper end portions of the binding posts I9 so as to retain the record units in bound position, but being yieldably retractable slightly from engagement with the posts to permit a record unit to be detached from the binding posts. It will be noted that the binding posts in their retracted operative position as shown in Fig. 3 are positioned adjacent to the forward end of the platen and substantially beneath the top casing plate 14. Due to the fact that the platen I5 is depressed slightly below the top plate M, an exit opening 43 is provided adjacent to the forward edge of the platen through which the record units when bound on the binding posts l9 may extend into position upon the platen in which they are supported for receiving inscriptions by means of a pencil or otherwise. Hence with this novel arrangement the record units are supported by means of the binding posts both in the record supply pack and in writing position upon the platen.
Although the record units A may be of various forms such as single record sheets or assemblies of record sheets attached together, the improved record device is especially useful for record units A such as shown in Fig. 8. This record unit A embodies a plurality of record sheets A with carbon sheets C interleaved in transfer relation therewith, all being bound together in a binding stub A Record units of this type are fully described in patent No. 2,120,161 Stevens, dated June 7, 1938. An illustrative embodiment of the invention having been fully described, the operation thereof will be obvious, and may be summarized as follows. When the suply pack S of record units are installed in the register on the binding posts I9 and it is desired to make an inscription on one of these units, the combined cover and platen I5 is swung into open position on its hinge I6 and the top record unit A raised from the supply pack after which the platen is'closed in its normal writing position .and "thetop unit A :is placed in writing position .upon .the platen as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 7. When in this position, it will be noted that the top record unit still remains attached to the bindingpostsl 9, extending therefrom through the exit opening 43 into writing position upon the platen. .After'the inscriptions have been entered, the inscribed record unit is raised manually somewhat and an upward and rearward pull exerted thereon thus causing the resilient holding means or spring plate 4.2 to yield slightly and to'move' away from the end :portions of the binding posts l9 sufficiently to permit the record unit to slide-over the tops-of the posts and thus be released and removed from the register. The inscribed recordleaves may :then be selectively separated from the rest of the record unit as above indicated and described in the Stevens patent referred to. The record units may be thus inscribed one after another until the supply is exhausted.
When it is desired to install a new supply of record units, the platen 'isswung intoopen position and the supporting carriage 24 together with the binding posts is moved rearwardly from beneath the upper cover plate l4 and the retaining spring plate 42, whereby the posts are in accessible position so that a fresh supply pack may be installed thereon; this is the position as shown in Fig. 5. To retract the supporting carriage as described, the operator engages the handle 34 moving it laterally from the position shown in Fig. 4 to that shown in Fig. 5, thus moving the actuator plate laterally and causing the cam rollers 36 to engage the inclined cam slots 31 thus moving the carriage and binding posts I9 into their retracted accessible position. After the new supply has been installed, the reverse movement of the handle 34 causes the carriage and pins to be moved into their normal operative position as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. When in this final position, the latch lug mounted at the free end of the latch spring 39 is yieldingly urged into latching position in the latching aperture 4| thus yieldingly retaining the carriage together with the supply pack in normal operative position.
Since certain changes may be made in the above construction and difierent embodiments of the invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
The invention having thus been fully described, the following is claimed:
1. In a record device, in combination, a rigid supporting casing having a space therein for containing a supply of record units, a platen, means movably supporting said platen with respect to said casing above said supply space and with its head end at a predetermined minimum distance from the corresponding end of the casing when in operative position, binding means including a binding post carried by said casing and normally positioned slightly beyond the head end of said platen when the latter is in said operative position, said binding post being accessible both above and below said platen to bind both the units in the supply space and a unit resting in writing position on the platen, said binding means further including a yielding retaining element fixed to the casing adjacent the head end thereof and normally resiliently en- 6 gagingtherf ree :endof said binding post to';re'-= leasably retain said units .upon thepost, a carriage supporting the binding post and slidable with respect to said casing, guiding means on the casing for confining the movement of said carriage solely to longitudinal movements with respect to'the casing, and means for manually moving said car-riage away from and toward said head end of the casing to alternately free said post from said fixed yielding retaining element and bring it into engagement therewith.
2. In a record device, in combination, a rigid supporting casing having a space therein for containing a supply of record units, a platen, means movably supporting said platen with respect to said casing above said supply space and with its headend at a predetermined minimum distance from'the corresponding end of the casing when in operative position, binding means including a binding #post carried by said casing andnorm'ally positioned slightly beyond the head endof said platen when the latter is in -said-op- 'erative position, said binding post being accessible both aboveand below said platen to bind both the units in the supply space and a unit resting in writing position on the platen, said binding means further including a yielding retaining element fixed to the casing adjacent the head end thereof and normally resiliently engaging the free end of said binding post to releasably retain said units upon the post, a carriage supporting the binding post and slidable with respect to said casing, guiding means on the casing for confining the movement of said carriage solely to longitudinal movements with respect to the casing, means for manually moving said carriage away from and toward said head end of the casing to alternately free said post from said fixed yielding retaining element and bring it into engagement therewith, and an automatically engageable spring latch for holding said carriage and its binding post in normal operative position.
3. In a record device, in combination, a rigid casing comprising a bottom plate, side and end walls, and a short top wall portion extending from one of the end walls, all providing a supply space for record units, a movable platen adapted to substantially complement said top wall portion to cover the supply space in said casing, a gap between the head edge of said platen and the adjacent edge of the top wall portion providing a narrow exit passage for record units, nonclamping binding means for said units carried by said casing and including a binding post positioned normally slightly beyond the head edge of said platen and serving to bind both the units in the supply space and a unit resting in writing position on the platen, said last named unit extending through said exit passage, record unit retaining means comprising a spring plate carried by said short top wall portion and normally resiliently engaging the free end of said binding post to releasably retain the units upon the post, a slidable element disposed within said casing and supporting said binding post, guiding means on the casing for confining the movement of said element solely to the longitudinal direction with respect to the casing, means for manually moving said element away from the head end of the casing to free said post from said fixed yielding retaining element for unimpeded application of a new supply of record units thereto.
4. In a record device, in combination, a rigid casing comprising a bottom plate, side and end walls, and a short top wall portion extending from one of the end walls, all providing a supply space for record units, a movable platen hinged along one side edge to one of said side walls and adapted to substantially complement said top wall portion to cover the supply space in said casing, said platen being depressed slightly below the plane of said top wall portion, a gap between the head edge of said platen and the adjacent edge of the top wall portion providing a narrow exit passage of fixed dimensions for record units, nonclamping binding means for said units carried by said casing and including a binding post positioned normally slightly beyond the head edge of said platen and serving to bind both the units in the supply space and a unit resting in writing position on the platen, said last named unit extending through said exit passage, record unit retaining means comprising a spring plate carried by said short top wall portion and normally resiliently engaging the free end of said binding post to releasably retain the units upon the post, a slidable element disposed within said casing and supporting said binding post, guiding means on the casing for confining the movement of said element solely to the longitudinal direction with respect to the casing, means for manually moving said element away from the head end of the casing to free said post from said fixed yielding retaining element for unimpeded application of a new supply of record units thereto.
