Our invention relates to an autographic register machine and we declare the following to be a full, clear, concise and exact description thereof suflicient to enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout the specification.
The object of the invention is to produce a device in which the invoices or other business sheets of paper will travel in one direction and the carbon paper which is interlocked between said invoices will travel transversely to it.
Heretofore, in machines of this character the 5 invoices were moved to give place to new or unused sheets by turning a hand crank which operated certain rollers for the purpose, whereas the carbon paper remained stationary, This was objectionable for the reason that the carbon paper 0 became worn in certain places more than others before it was moved transversely by hand or was forgotten until past redemption.

Referring more particularly ,to the drawings the device embodies a casing I having a cover 2 that is hinged on cross rod 3 which has bearings in the opposite sides 4, 4 of casing l. The front end 50 is cut away at 5 to clear certain discs and a gear wheel hereinafter described. It rests on shoulders 6 that project laterally and are formed integral in the inside surfaces of sides 4, 4 of casing l,

formed integral to the outer surface of one of the lateral sides 4 of casing I. Cover I2 has a large opening at I! above the surface of cover 2 which is therebeneath when in operating position, whereby to allow for writing on the invoices 20 or other sheets of paper as they pass thereunder.
Shutters or partitions are disposed transversely of casing l and adjacent the top edge thereof. Each of said shutters 25 is welded or otherwise secured at their respective ends to the inside surfaces of sides 4, 4 of casing I and adjacent the top edge as above stated. Furthermore, said shutters 25 are inclined at an angle, whereby to direct the several sheets of paper 20 towards the front end of the machine and over the top surface of cover 2.
The means for drawing said sheets of paper 20 longitudinally of the machine embodies a master shaft which has bearings in opposite sides 4, 4 of casing l. Shaft 30 extends beyond side 4 and a crank handle 3| having boss 32 is mounted thereto and fixed to turn therewith by a set screw 33.
Discs 35, 35 having bosses 36, 36 respectively are mounted to turn with master shaft 30 by means of set screws 31, 31. Plates 38, 38 with curved surfaces are formed integral in each instance to the periphery of discs 35, 35. Said plates 38, 38 cooperate with roller thereabove and hereinafter mentioned, whereby 'to draw paper sheets 20 longitudinally of the machine.
A spring pressed plunger 39 is mounted to stand upright in one of the discs 35 to engage the alined apertures made in the successive layers of paper 20, whereby to hold said sheets 23 in alignment.
Roller 40 is mounted to turn on shaft 4| which has bearings in elongated apertures 42, 42 formed in rock arms 43, 43 which are pivoted at 44, 44 to shafts projecting laterally from sides 4, 4 of casing I. Said roller 40 is held yieldingly against plates 38, 38 of discs 35, 35 as they pass thereunder by coiled springs 45, 45 housed in apertures 42, 42 made in the free ends 41, 41 of rock arms 43, 43. Said springs 45,.45 press directly against plungers 48, 48 that rest also in said apertures 42, 42 in each instance and against the respective parts of shaft 4| adjacent its ends. Guard plate 49 bolted at 50, 50 to rock arms 43, 43 not only covers the open ends of apertures 42, 42 but also ties said arms 43, 43 together, whereby they can be moved from full to dotted line position i1lustrated in Fig. 1. Furthermore, it acts as a guard to paper drawing mechanism heretofore described. The means for holding rock arms 43, 43 and the connected parts in full line position illustrated in Fig. 3 contemplates latch members 5|, 5| which are fixed to turn on the outside of casing I to the extended ends of rock shaft 52 having bearings in the free ends 41, 41 of rock arms 43, 43. The free ends of latches 5|, 5| are held normally in engagement with laterally projecting pins 53, 53 formed integral with the laterally projecting thickened portions 54, 54 of sides 4, 4 by a spring 55 coiled about shaft 52 and having one end 55 projected through said shaft 52 and the other engaging at 56 with a tight fit in a recess in the adjacent part of one of the arms 43. Ears 51 are formed integral with latches 5|, 5| to aid in swinging said latches 5|, 5| to full line position illustrated in Fig. 1.
The means for the turning of master shaft 30 in a clockwise direction embodies a gear 58 mounted to turn therewith and engaged by a pawl 59 pivoted at 60 to the inner surfaced one of the sides 4 of casing I. Gear 58 also meshes with pinion gear 59 fixed to turn with shaft 4| carrying roller 40, whereby to insure the positive rotation of said roller 49 in cooperation with discs 35, 35.
The part that is new embodies the mechanism for drawing the carbon paper 6| transversely to the paper 20. This mechanism comprises a roller 62 mounted on shaft 63 having hearings in the ends 64, 64 of brackets 65, 65. Brackets 65 may be made integral with one of the walls 4 of casing I or bolted thereto by providing each with a wing 66 which is bolted or welded to the contiguous outside surface of side 4 of easing I.
The means for turning roller 62 intermittently embodies the use of a ratchet wheel 61 having a boss 68 which is held to turn with shaft 63 by set screw 69. Ratchet 61 is engaged by a spring pressed pawl 10 mounted to turn on a shaft 1| carried on bearings in a vertically movable three sided casing 12. A spring 13 is coiled about shaft 1| and has one end engaging the rear of pawl 10 and the other held to the contiguous surface of casing 12. Casing 12 is mounted to slide within predetermined limits on one of the sides 4 of casing I. To this end it is provided with elongated slots 14, 14 through which project headed bolts 15, 15 that engage the adjacent outer surface of one of the sides 4 of casing I.
Casing 12 is held normally downward in full line position shown in Fig. 4 by a fiat spring 16 secured at one end to block 11 formed integral or otherwise fixed to the adjacent side 4 of easing I and having its free end 18 resting on the top edge of vertically movable casing 12,
A friction reducing wheel is mounted to turn on. a shaft 8| having bearings in the lower part of casing 12. Said wheel 80 is engaged by a cam 82 fixed to turn with master shaft 30.
It will appear, therefore, that when the free end of cam 82 strikes wheel 80 on casing 12 it will elevate said casing 12 to dotted line position shown in Fig. 4, whereby pawl 10 will be likewise elevated to turn ratchet 61 the space of one notch. The turning of ratchet 61 will likewise rotate roller 62 to the same degree. A pressure roller 83 rests on roller 62 and cooperates therewith, whereby to draw thecarbon paper 6| transversely across the machine when roller 62 and 83 turn. To this end roller 83 is mounted on shaft 84 which has loose bearings in the elongated recesses 85, 85 made in brackets 65, 65.
A supply'shaft 86 is mounted in a removable manner in loose bearings formed in the ends I5,
I5 of auxiliary casing I6 made integral with one of the sides 4 of easing I and directly opposite roller 62. Shaft 86 extends beyond one of the ends I5 of easing I6 to form a handle 9| for withdrawingshaft 86 from its bearings, whereby to load carbon paper 6| thereon, An enlargement at 92 will prevent shaft 86 from passing clear through its bearings,
A spring pressed plunger 95 mounted to a bearing at 96 in the adjacent side 4 of easing I projects into the path of rotating handle 3|, whereby to limit said handle 3| to a single turn. Spring 91 resting in socket 98 and surrounding plunger 95 below shoulder 99 will urge said plunger normally outward. The means for holding cover I2 in closed position contemplates a latch member I00 having arms |0|, |0| formed integral therewith. The upper ends of arms IOI, I0| are rounded to form bearings I02, I02 for the projection of axle rod I03 which is carried in bearings I04, I04 made by bending over parts of the edge I95 of depending rim. I06 made integral with cover I2. The upper edge I01 of latch I00 will engage nubs I08, I08 formed integral with the outside edges of brackets 65, 65. A handle IIO to aid in manipulating latch I00 is made from the same piece of metal and bent at an angle to said member mo.
Moreover, cover I2 is held above the top edge III of casing by elevations or rests II2 made integral with said casing I and by the top edges II5, I I5 of brackets 65, 65.
A plate I I6 having notches I I1, I I8 thereon for clearing plunger 39 on one of the disc wheels 35 and gear 51 respectively is secured to the reduced portions I20, I20 of the upper edge I II of easing I. The inner edge I I9is bent upward slightly to direct the lowermost sheet or invoice 20 back into the interior of casing I, whereas the sheets 20 above will slide over this plate 6 and pass out of the machine as it is used.
In operating the machine, the user will throw back roller 40 into full line position illustrated in Fig. 1. This can be done by manipulating ears 51, 51 of latches 5|, 5| then throwing open cover T I2 by manipulating handle N0 of latch member I 00 to release said latch and then opening under cover 2. Paper rolls or stacks 20 are placed in the machine. The free ends of said rolls are fed severally up through shutters 25 and after lowering cover 2 forward over plate I I 6 with plunger 39 projecting upward through the holes in the aligned sheets 20. In the meantime, the several layers of carbon paper 6| will be unrolled from supply roller 86 sufficiently far to be drawn transversely through the several sheets 20 of ordinary paper and their ends caught between actuating roller 62 and pressure roller 83 thereabove.
Rock arms 43, 43 carrying roller 40 are swung back to full line position, whereupon latch members 5|, 5| will automatically snap under pins 53, 53 to lock roller 40 in place yieldingly against the discs 35, 35 with the several sheets of paper 20 therebetween.
When the billing clerk is to make use of the machine, he Will write the momoranda on the top sheet 20 which is transferred by the carbon paper 6| to the several sheets 20 therebeneath. After writing on top sheet 20 he will push in spring pressed plunger 95 to clear handle 3 I. He thereupon releases plunger 95 and continues rotating handle 3| until it again comes into contact with stop plunger 95. The'turning of handle 3| will cause discs 35, 35 and cooperating roller 40 to rotate. This rotation of discs 35 and roller 40 will draw forward the sheets of paper 20 therebetween. The lowermost sheet 20 will be directed back into casing I through the opening just below the turned up edge IIS of plate H6 for preservation and the other three directed towards the outside of the machine for distribution as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5.
The turning of master shaft 30 will likewise cause a simultaneous rotation of cam 82 fixed to turn thereon, whereby said cam will strike against the friction reducing wheel 80 in the lower part of casing I2. This will elevate casing '72 and pawl "I0 carried therein, whereby to effect a partial rotation of ratchet 61 and of rollers 62 and 83. The rotation of rollers 62 and 83 will draw carbon paper (ii a predetermined distance transversely through sheets of paper 20 and thereby present a partial new surface between the new sheets 20 drawn thereover as above described.
The modification shown in Fig. 6 contemplate the use of a machine where the paper is drawn manually over the plate I20 an under holding member I2I now to be mentioned. A spring pressed holding member IZI is mounted above plate I20 and is connected with link I22 by pivot I23. Link I22 is pivoted at I24 to lever member I25 which is fulcrumed at I26 to a shaft projecting laterally from side I2I the springs for holding member I2I in upper or normal position are not shown.
When paper holding member I2I is pushed down it will actuate lever I25 on its fulcrum I26 to push the casing I2 heretofore described upward, whereby to cause the spring pressed pawl I0 to turn ratchet 61 for rotating roller 62 as heretofore explained. Pressing downward on holding member I2I will pinch the paper 20 between the upper surface of plate I20 and the under surface of member I2 I In both forms of the device the carbon paper 6| passes between roller 62 and 83 and is torn off and thrown away.
Hereinabove the description stated that one of the sheets of paper 20 would pass beneath the edge II9 of plate H6, and pass into the casing for preservation. However, in place of one of the sheets passing within the casing all of the sheets may pass above H6 and therebeyond for distribution.
Pressure roller 83 is mounted in the same manner as pressure roller 40 with the respect to plungers 48, 48 and springs 45, 45. Plates I30, I30 hold springs I3I, I3I within their respective recesses. Said plates I30, I30 are secured to the top edges H5, H5 of brackets 65, 65 by bolts or by welding.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. In an authographic register machine, a master shaft having discs mounted thereon and turning therewith, a roller cooperating with said discs, whereby to draw paper therebetween, a cam mounted on said shaft, a pawl mounted adjacent said cam and actuated thereby, a ratchet engaged by said pawl, a roller turning with said ratchet and a third roller cooperating with said roller turning with said ratchet, whereby to draw sheets of carbon paper therebetween.
2. In an autographic register machine, a master shaft, discs mounted on said master shaft, means mounted on said discs to aid in aligning sheets of paper, a roller cooperating with said discs, whereby to draw said sheets of paper therebetween, another set of rollers for drawing carbon paper therebetween, a cam connected with said shaft, a pawl actuated by said cam, aratchet engaged by said pawl and said ratchet mounted to turn with said second named roller to draw the carbon paper transversely of said machine.
3. In an autographic register machine, a mas-' ter shaft having discs mounted thereon and turning therewith a roller cooperating with said discs, whereby to draw paper therebetween, a cam mounted on said shaft, a spring pressed pawl mounted adjacent said cam and actuated thereby, a ratchet engaged by said pawl, a roller turning with said ratchet and a gravity roller cooperating with said roller turned by said ratchet, whereby to draw sheets of carbon paper therebetween.
