Description

(No Model.)
H. BOUGHARD.
GAR AXLE BOX.
Patented May 9, 1882..
INVENTOR ATTORNEYS;
N4 PETERS. mw'umu w. Washington. D. r;
i 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
HENRY BOUOHARD, on ST. ELMO, ALABAMA.
CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,648, dated May 9,
Application filed November 23, 1881.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, HENRY BOUGHARD, of St. Elmo, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented a new and Improved Railroad-Oar Axle-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an under side view of a railway car to which my invention is applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of one of the journalboxes enlarged. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the same box in linewarof Fig,2. My invention relates to improvements in means for preventing car-axle boxes from get; ting hot; and it consists in the peculiar contruck, to the nozzle of which blower is secured preferably an india-rubber pipe, (I, attached at its outer end to a main air-pipe, 0, preferably of metal. The metallic pipe 0 is secured to the bottom I) of the car and passes around its ends and sides parallel thereto, and may be coiled in the middle of the bottom of the car, if desired.
g 9 represent branch metallic pipes, hinged to the main air-pipe c, and each provided at its lower end with an india-rubber pipe, 2, leading into a pipe, h, opening into car-axle box 2', of the usual construct-ion.
It represents a grooved pulley, fast on the axis of the rotary fan-blower, around which' rotary fan-blowers are employed, with pipes leading from the main pipes ct-hrough the floor of the car at one or more places, whereby a perfect ventilation will be made in the car (No model.)
when in motion, thereby preserving fruit, vegetables, and meat a greater length of time than by the usual method without ventilation, and at the same time a current of cold air will be injected into each axlebox to prevent it from becoming heated.
22 represents a small axle-box,adapted to fit into any one of the axle-boxes, of ordinary construction. The small axle-box p, inserted in the larger axlebox q, is provided on its inner end with a semicircular bearing,r,for the passage of the axle, and a spring or springs, s s, secured to its lower face, the free ends of the springs 8 bearing against the bottom of the axle-box q, in which the smaller axle-box pis inserted.
t t represent set-screws passing through the bottom of the axle-box q, the points of the screws bearing against the springs s, whereby the tension of .the springs may be adjusted. The function of the springs is to keep the lubricant contained in the axle-box p always in contact with the car-axle in its revolution, and thus dispense with the cotton-waste packing or other couvcyer of thelubricant to the car-axle in general use.
'u. to represent flat springs secured to the under face of the small axle-box p and curved outwardly,so that their free ends bear against the inner face of the outer end of the axle-box q, whereby the axlebox p is pressed inwardly.
'U 1; represent arms, secured to the sides of the axle-box p and projecting above it, which act as stops to prevent the axle-box p from being raised too high by abutting against the upper face of the axle-box q when the box 2) is raised.
The lubricant employed may be soft soap or other-equivalent cheap material, always kept in contact with the axle, whereby a conveyor or packing for the lubricant is entirely (lispensed with.
-VVhat I claim as my invention is- 1. The combination, with a rotary fan-blower driven by a belt connected with the shaft of the blower and a car-axle, of the main air-pipe e and branch air-pipes g, each hinged to the airpipe and leading to an axle-box, and ventilating-pipes 0, leading from the main air-pipe e through the floor of the car into its interior,
whereby the car-axle boxes are kept cool and s u, secured to the under face, substantially theilcar ventilated1 at the same time, substanas described, and for the purpose set; forth. tia y as escri ec.
2. The combination, with the axle-box q, HENRY BOUOHARD' 5 provided with the adjusting-screws t, of the 'Witnesses:
axle-box 1), adapted to be inserted therein,- F. W. CHASE, and prm'ided with the stops '0 v and. springs A. BOUCHARD.
