I 6 v Q N) g 1 a I 4 v I Ewe/$7 UNITED STATE PATENT OFFICE.
MATTHEW BELK, OF PALMERSTON NORTH, NEW ZEALAND.
APPARATUS FOR PREVENTING LOCOMOTIVES OR VEHICLES FROM LEAVING RAILS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No.,554,644, dated February 18, 1896.
Application filed May 20, 1895. Serial No. 549,951. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHEW BELK, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Palmerston North, in the Colony of New Zealand, have invented a new or Improved Apparatus for Preventing Locomotives or Vehicles from Leaving the Rails, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple apparatus whereby locomotives and rolling-stock can be prevented from leaving the rails or permanent way when meeting with obstructions, or passing around curves, or when subjected to unusual shocks or collisions.
A further object is to reduce the friction in passing around curves and facilitate the passage through points and crossings.
I The drawing represents an end view of a car-truck with my improvements attached.
Referring to the drawing it will be seen that my guide-wheels a are bored out of such a size that they will pass over the bends b in the axle b, and are then fitted with loose bushes 0 made in two halves and held in position by glands (1, so as to freely revolve on the axle b and against the sleeves 5 The axle b is bent down, as shown, in order to allow of the wheels a Working freely under the framing while the axle is stationary. By these arrangements I provide guide-wheels a, revolving freely at an angle against the inside of the rails and so that the flanges project under the head of the rails at (1, so as to prevent the vehicle lifting or leaving the rails. The glands d and sleeves b are also formed in halves to allow them to be placed on the shaft. v
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In combination in a railway-carriage, the frame, an axle having a central depressed portion with laterally-extending bearing portions in a higher plane connected therewith byinclined portions, and the wheels on the inclined portions, substantially as described.
2. In combination in a railway locomotive or carriage, the bent axle, the inclined wheels thereon having openings of larger diameter than the axle with bushings in said openings made in halves, the glands d and the sleeves b MATTHEW BELK. Witnesses:
FRANK F. HAGGITT, R. NIELsEN.
