UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERBERT GREENWOOD, OF EAST TEMPLETON, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND MICHAEL KEATING, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
FOLDING CRIB.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,490, dated May 9, 1882,
Application filed March 20, 1582. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT GREENWOOD, of East Templeton, in the county of Worcester, of the State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Folding Cribs; and I do hereby declare the same to be described in the following specification and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which-- Figure 1 is a top view, Fig. 2 a side elevation, Fig. 3 an end view, and Fig. 4 a transverse section, of a folding crib containing my invention, such figures showing it in an elevated state for being used with suitable bedding. Fig. 5 is a transverse section of it in a depressed or folded state, or in a condition for it to be run or slid underneath a bedstead.
The nature of my invention is duly defined in the claims hereinafter presented.
In the drawings, A represents a rectangular fence, composed of two open-frames, a b, and a series of connecting posts, 0, arranged as shown. Vithi'n this fence is a vertically-movable basket or bedding-holder, B, provided at 2 each of its opposite ends with twoears, d, to rest on the end pieces of thelower frame of the fence, such holder being suitably constructed to hold bedding as usually required fora young child. There is pivoted to the ends of the up- 0 per frame of the fence A two leg-frames, C
and 1), each of which consists of two legs, 6, and a connecting'bar, f, arranged as represented. The two legs of the frame D cross, and are between and next those of the frame 5 C, and have catch-hooks g to hook upon studs h, projecting from the legs of such frame 0, all being as and arranged as represented. The bedding-holder at each end of it I usually furnish with two wheels, k, to freely revolve on supporting-journals 'i, and project a short dis- 4o tance below it, (the said holder,) in order that when it is at its lowest position the wheels may rest on the floor and facilitate the movementof the crib into or out from the space underneath a bedstead.
When the parts of the folding crilh are in a raised state, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4, they will be kept so, while the catch-hooks may be on the studs; but on raising the legframe I) so as to unhitch the hooks from the studs the whole crib may be depressed or reduced to the state as represented in Fig. 5, in which case it 'will be seen that the beddingholder or its wheels will be on the floor m and the fence will have dropped downward, and, with one of the leg-frames, will also rest on the floor. In this condition the crib may he slid underneath a bed or stored, as; occasion may require. The fence is to serve as a guard to prevent a child from falling out of the crib 6-) when the latter is in a raised state.
I claim as my invention as follows, viz:
1. The combination of the rectangular fence and the two leg-frames arranged therewith,
, pivoted thereto, and provided with catch-hooks 6 5 and studs, all substantially and to operate as set forth. 7
2. The combination of the bedding-holder, provided with ears and arranged and movable, as described, within the rectangular fence, with such fence and the two leg-frames applied thereto, and provided with catch-hooks and studs, all bein g essentially and to operate as set forth.
HERBERT GREENWOOD. Witnesses:
R. H. EDDY, E. B. PRATT.
