UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIGE.
GEORGE A. ELLIS, OF GARDNER, MASSACHUSETTS.
WICKER OR RATTAN CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 257,439, dated May 2, 1882.
Application filed January 9, 1882. (X0 model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE A. ELLIS, of Gardner, Worcester county, and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Wicker or Rattan Chair; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ot' the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention is in the nature of an improvement in wicker or rattan chairs; and the invention consists in a wicker or rattan -chair with its back and seat provided with projecting elastic anges to receive and retain in place upholstered cushions, in the manner more particularly described hereinafter.
In the accompanying` sheet ot' drawings, Figure l is a perspective view ot' my improved chair; Fig. 2, a cross-section of same.

This invention relates particularly to that cla-ss of wicker or rattan chairs that are designed for upholstering, or, more correctly, that are to have itted upholstered cushions to their backs and seats. Various means have been employed for this purpose, but none of them, owing to the peculiar lightness and elasticity of this class of chairs, have heretofore proved successful. By my invention, however, chairs constructed ot' wicker or rattan in the ordinary manner can be readily upholstered. To that end I construct the back A of the chair with elastic ianges B, projecting at right angles from the inner face of the back posts, a. These flanges may project to any desired extent, and they are united tothe back posts, a, of the chair, by the usual ornamental wicket1 or rattan work, b. These iian ges extend from the top ofthe back to the seatl D ofthe chair. To two ofthe sides of the seat D, and parallel with the same, and extending from front to rear, are also elastic ianges C, corresponding in dimensions and general appearance with the iianges B of the back A, and at the rear these flanges C are united to the flanges B, of which they are substantially a continuation. To the top edges of both the, flan ges B and C is secured a continuous plaited edging, E,
which, being somewhat wider than the edges of the ilauges B and C, projects on either side of these anges.
From the foregoing it will be seen that by reason of the fianges B and G both the back ot my chair and its seat are surrounded on two sides by substantially a recessed frame. Into this frame so formed, or,'rather, between the danges B and U, are inserted edgewise from the top ot the back and edgewise from the front ot' the seat upholstered cushions F and G, the thickness of the cushions being about equal to the width and height ofthe danges. Vhen the cushions are so placed the overlapping edge of the plaited edging E prevents them from riding up and out of the iianges, which, together with forming supports for the arms of the occupant, is its purpose.
From the foregoing it will be seen that not only is a simple and inexpensive means provided t'or upholsterin g wicker or rattanchairs, but it at the same time permits the ready removal of the cushions for dusting and repairmg.
The Hanges B and C, by reason of their elastic construction, not only enable them to yield readily when the cushions kF and G are placed within them, so that such placing is accomplished without much trouble, but they also, by reason of their elastic force, tend to hold the cushions irmly in position.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wicker or rattan chair, the combination of upholstered cushions F and G with the back A and seat D, having flanges ot wicker-work Band C and a projecting edging, E, whereby the cushions are held in place, substantially as is shown and described.
2. In a wicker or rattan chair, the back and seat thereof provided with elastic tlanges, in
combination with removable upholstered cash-- ions, substantially as and i'or the purpose described.
