This invention relates to receptacles for cigar and cigarette ashes and butts and the like.
An object of the invention is to provide a cigarette ash stand which has a novel and improved construction for extinguishing the cigarette and disposing thereof.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cigarette ash stand by which, through the use of one hand only, the cigarette to be discarded may be extinguished and disposed of.
A further object of the invention is to provide ,a cigarette extinguishing ash stand which is simple and pleasing in design, inexpensive to manufacture, and effective in operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and in which,

Figure 6 is an enlarged sectional elevational view taken on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
To extinguish a cigarette with the ordinary ash stand, it is customary to mash the lighted end against the interior of the ash tray and then drop the cigarette butt therein. However,- the cigarette is very seldom quickly extinguishedby this method, and, if allowed to come into contact with other cigarette butts in the ash tray bowl, it will cause them to smoulder and as a result a continuous stream of smoke comes out of the bowl.
My ash stand eliminates all this fuss and bother, for it insures that the cigarette butt is extinguished before it drops into the ash bowl.
Reference is now had to the drawings in which like reference characters denote similar parts throughout the several views. As illustrated, there is a hollow bowl 2 formed of sheet metal or the like, and open at the top 4, with lateral semi-cylindrical cigarette supports 6 horizontally disposed at intervals on the rim ID of the bowl.
These are for the purpose of supporting lighted cigarettes while they are still in use.
The bowl 2 is supported upon the upper end l2 of a hollow cylindrical column I4 which in turn is supported upon a base member 16, which is adapted to rest upon the floor, being heavy enough to prevent the entire assembly from being tipped over readily. Inside the bowl 2 is a platform l6 secured to the bowl by being soldered or welded thereto, and forming a floor for the bowl chamber 20 thereabove.
The floor I8 has a trap door 22 carried on hinges 24 which are secured along one edge of a trap opening 26 formed in the platform l8. A trap door opening lever 28 is pivoted at one end 30 to the underside of the trap door 22, and at its other end 32 to a plunger 36 which extends downward through an aperture 38 formed in the bowl floor I8, the plunger 34 having a button 40 secured to its upper end for depressing the same. A coiled spring 4| is circumposed about the plunger 34 and has one end bearing against the under face of the button 40 and has the other end bearing against the platform l8, the spring acting to normally maintain the plunger and trap door in their uppermost position, with the trap door closed, and resiliently opposes downward movement thereof. It is thus apparent that depression of the button 40 will open the trap door and allow a cigarette butt to be dropped therethrough and down through the cylindrical column I 4 into a receptacle disposed in the bottom thereof or in the base I6.
0n the other side of the bowl floor I8 is a hole 42 formed through the floor [8, the hole 42 being only a little greater in diameter than the outside diameter of a cigarette 44 which is to be inserted through the hole. Below the hole 42 are two cigarette mashing jaw members 46 and 48, both being pivoted at one end on a vertical pin 50 which is secured to and extends downwardly from the platform 18, a spacer 52 "serving to keep the jaw members 46 and 48 spaced from the underside of the platform. The jaw members have their distal ends 54 and 56 flattened to form parallel jaws which move across the underside of the hole 42, when the jaw members pivot on pin 50.,
To actuate the mashing jaw members, they are provided with linking levers 58 and 60 which are pivotally secured at one end to the jaw members 46 and 48 and pivotally connected together at their inner ends by a pivot pin 62. A plunger 64 having a push button 66, has its lower end 68 resting upon the junction of the levers 58 and 60, the shank of the plunger extending through a hole 10 in the platform I8. Depression of the plunger 64 will cause the jaws 54 and 56 to move toward each other, so as to mash the lighted end of an cigarette 44 inserted down into the hole 42. A coiled spring 65 is circumposed about the shank of the plunger 64 and has one end bearing against the under face of the button 66 and has the other end bearing against the floor [8, the spring acting to normally hold the jaws 54 and 56 apart, and the plunger into its upward position.
The button 66 is placed so it can be reached and depressed with the middle finger as the cigarette held between the thumb and first finger is inserted downward into the hole 42. The lighted end of the cigarette is thus mashed and extinguished without any delay, and when the middle finger is lifted ofi the button 66, the extinguished cigarette butt drops down through the hollow column 14.
Although I have described a preferred embodiment of my invention in specific terms, it is to be understood that various changes may be made in size, shape, materials and arrangement without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
I claim:'
1. In a combined cigarette stand and an ash receptacle including a floor and means on said floor for disposal of smokers refuse, a cigarette extinguishing means disposed adjacent the under surface of said floor and operable exteriorly of the latter, said means comprising a pair of horizontally disposed arms arranged in facing relation with respect to each other and mounted below said floor for horizontal swinging movement into engagement with the lit end of a cigarette when placed therebetween, resilient means operatively connected to said jaws for normally urging said jaws out of engagement with each other and for freeing the snuffed out cigarette so as to permit it to fall into the stand underneath upon releasing said jaws after movement of the latter into engagement with each other, and hand actuable means arranged exteriorly above said fioor and operatively connected to said jaws for effecting said movement of said jaws, there being an aperture in said fioor for the in- 4 sertlon of a cigarette therethrough whereby the lighted end of said cigarette can be mashed as said jaws are moved toward each other.
2. In a combined cigarette stand and ash receptacle including a fioor and means on said floor for disposal of smokers refuse, a cigarette extinguishing means disposed adjacent the under surface of said floor and operable exteriorly of the latter, said means comprising a pair of horizontally disposed arms arranged in facing relation with respect to each other and mounted below said floor for horizontal swinging movement into and out of engagement with the lit end of a cigarette when placed therebetween, resilient means operatively connected to said jaws for normally urging said jaws out of engagement with each other and for freeing the snuffed out cigarette so as to permit it to fall into the stand underneath upon releasing said jaws after movement of the latter into engagement with each other, and hand actuable means arranged exterlorly above said floor and operatively connected to said jaws for effecting the movement of said jaws, said last named means comprising a vertically disposed plunger slidably mounted in said floor, a push button carried b the upper end of said plunger, and link means operatively connected to the lower end of said plunger and to said jaws, there being an aperture in said floor for the insertion of a cigarette therethrough whereby the lighted end of said cigarette can be mashed as said jaws are moved toward each other.
